Is Dark Souls Still Worth Playing in 2026?

Dark Souls: Remastered remains a strong pick for players who enjoy deliberate combat, exploration, and a demanding action RPG—but its pace is not for everyone.

Yes—Dark Souls: Remastered is still worth your time in 2026 if you want a demanding action RPG built around deliberate combat and exploration, and you are comfortable with an older game’s pace. It includes the Artorias of the Abyss expansion, preserves the original level design, and makes online play optional. That is a strong case for the right player, not a promise that its difficulty or rhythm will suit everyone.

What you get with Dark Souls: Remastered

Dark Souls: Remastered bundles the main game with the Artorias of the Abyss expansion. FromSoftware’s January 12, 2018 release announcement says the remaster keeps the original’s level design while introducing technical and online changes. That matters if you are choosing it for the interconnected world and route-finding: this is a remaster, not a redesign of the original layout.

The official feature information describes online sessions for up to six players. That number is a capacity specification, not a current player count or a guarantee that you will find other players whenever you want.

Why it can still be rewarding

Exploration asks you to pay attention

Dark Souls makes progress feel earned by asking you to learn spaces, notice routes, and make decisions with limited information. Its preserved level design is part of the appeal: you are engaging with the original world structure rather than a modernized map or a newly arranged campaign. If discovering a shortcut or understanding how areas connect is satisfying to you, the game’s older design can still feel purposeful.

Combat favors patience over speed

Fights reward observation and measured actions more than button-mashing. You will need to read opponents, choose when to commit, and accept that mistakes can cost you progress. This deliberate rhythm is a central reason to play—and a good reason to pass if you want a fast, forgiving action game.

The atmosphere is part of the experience

The world’s mood and sense of isolation complement its demanding play. The case for returning in 2026 rests on how those design choices work together, not on a claim that the game is universally enjoyable or that it remains popular by a particular measurable standard.

Who should play it—and who may not

  • It is a good fit if you enjoy challenging action RPGs, deliberate fights, exploration, and learning through setbacks.
  • It may frustrate you if you prefer constant guidance, quick recovery from mistakes, or combat that lets you react without much planning.
  • It is a poor fit if you want a reliably busy online population. Official capacity details and a maintenance notice do not establish how active matchmaking is in your region.

Does online play matter in 2026?

No—you can choose the game without making online play your reason to buy. The PlayStation Store listing describes online play as optional and says online play on PlayStation requires PS Plus. The official series site also surfaced a dated server-maintenance notice for Remastered on August 18, 2026. That confirms a maintenance notice, but it does not show matchmaking activity or uniform service across regions and platforms.

If you want online interaction, treat it as an optional feature rather than a guaranteed part of your experience. The available official details do not establish cross-platform play, current player counts, or platform-by-platform uptime.

Is Dark Souls worth your time, specifically?

If you want an action RPG that expects patience and rewards learning its world and combat, Dark Souls: Remastered remains a worthwhile choice in 2026. If you are mainly looking for a current online community, a gentler difficulty curve, or a faster pace, the evidence here does not make it a safe recommendation. The most useful question is not whether the game is old, but whether its deliberate design sounds like the kind of challenge you want.
