For most Ring Video Doorbells, press and hold the setup button for 20 seconds, then release it. The button location depends on the model and power source. A documented exception applies to Video Doorbell Pro, now called Wired Doorbell Plus: in the specified no-light condition, hold its right-side button for 30 seconds. A factory reset can erase the current setup and require you to add the doorbell again in the Ring app.
Before you reset: reboot or factory reset?
A reboot only restarts the doorbell and is the safer first step for a temporary freeze or connection problem. A factory reset is more disruptive: it uses a sustained setup-button hold and may require complete setup again in the Ring app.

Try an in-app reboot when the doorbell is online
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap Devices and select the doorbell.
- Open Device Health.
- Tap Reboot This Device.
This option requires the doorbell to be connected to Wi-Fi. On some battery models, briefly removing and reinserting the battery can also restart the device. For wired models, briefly interrupting power can perform a reboot; only do this if you can safely access the circuit and know how to isolate power.
Find your Ring Doorbell’s setup button
| Doorbell type | Typical setup-button location | Access note |
|---|---|---|
| Internal-battery model | On the back | Some installations may require removing the doorbell from the wall first. |
| Removable-battery model | Under the front faceplate | Remove the faceplate according to the model’s installation instructions. |
| Wired model | Under the faceplate on the right side | Exact access varies by model. |
Do not assume one screwdriver bit fits every Ring Doorbell. If the unit must be removed, check the installation guide for that exact model and fastener.

How to perform the standard 20-second factory reset
- Identify the model and whether it uses an internal battery, removable battery, or wired power.
- Expose the setup button using the model’s faceplate or mounting instructions.
- Press and hold the setup button for 20 seconds.
- Release the button.
- Wait for the doorbell to restart. If the Ring app asks for setup, follow its on-screen instructions to connect the doorbell to Wi-Fi and finish configuration.
The 20-second instruction is Ring’s general procedure for most Video Doorbells. The light pattern and restart time can vary by model.
Video Doorbell Pro (Wired Doorbell Plus) exception
Ring’s current name for Video Doorbell Pro is Wired Doorbell Plus. Use this model-specific procedure only when it matches your hardware and symptom: the doorbell has power but its light does not light and flash.

- Locate the button on the right side.
- Hold it down for a full 30 seconds.
- Release the button and wait about one minute while the doorbell restarts.
- Briefly press and release the button to enter setup mode.
- Complete setup in the Ring app if prompted.
A brief press after the restart is a setup-mode check; it is not a substitute for the 30-second hard reset.

If the reset does not fix the problem
Resetting cannot compensate for a dead battery, missing power, weak Wi-Fi, or a hardware fault. Check these items before repeating the procedure:

- Wi-Fi: Confirm the network works at the doorbell’s location and that the phone running the Ring app is connected during setup.
- Light behavior: Note whether the light is off, flashing, or showing another pattern; the behavior helps distinguish power and setup problems.
- Physical access: Recheck that you are pressing the actual setup button and that the faceplate is correctly removed.
Ring’s setup guidance treats factory reset as a last resort for offline devices. If the doorbell remains unresponsive after power, Wi-Fi, and setup-mode checks, contact Ring Support with the model name and observed light behavior.

A factory reset returns the doorbell to a state that may require enrollment again. You may need to reconnect it to Wi-Fi, restore device settings, and confirm that it appears in the correct Ring location. A reboot, by contrast, is intended to restart the existing installation without the same reconfiguration.
