The nuclear-resistant item described by Rostec was a 100-gram mechanical, self-winding wristwatch for the Ratnik kit, claimed to keep running through a nuclear weapon’s electromagnetic effects. That is a component-level claim, not protection for the soldier or the entire suit.
What part of the Ratnik suit is supposed to survive a nuclear blast?
The reported item is a mechanical, self-winding field watch. Rostec representatives told Live Science on 13 October 2017 that the watch weighed 100 grams and could withstand destructive electromagnetic pulses, including the electromagnetic effects of a nuclear blast. Oleg Faustov, Rostec’s chief designer of life-support systems for tactical gear, said: “If a soldier is exposed to electromagnetic emission of a nuclear bomb, the watch will continue to operate without any interruption.”

Because it is mechanical rather than dependent on electronic circuits, the watch was presented as less vulnerable to an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). The exact issued model was not identified, and the public statement did not provide a test protocol, exposure level, independent test result or serial-production specification.

- It does not show that Ratnik armor can withstand nuclear-blast overpressure.
- It does not establish protection from the thermal flash, prompt radiation or radioactive fallout associated with a nuclear detonation.
- It does not show that the suit’s radios, displays, sensors or power systems would continue working.
- It does not make a consumer mechanical watch nuclear-proof; no commercial equivalent was identified in the statement.
The wording concerns electromagnetic emission only. A watch continuing to run is therefore a very different proposition from a person surviving near a nuclear explosion.

What is Russia’s Ratnik combat system?
Ratnik is Russia’s second-generation integrated combat-equipment system. Rostec said in December 2020 that almost 300,000 sets had been delivered over eight years, that the system combined more than 60 elements and that annual serial deliveries began in 2015 after troop trials. Rostec and TASS descriptions reported by Live Science in 2017 counted 59 items, a different public count from a different year and description.
The system is an equipment family rather than a single garment. Its elements cover personal protection and load-bearing equipment alongside weapons, communications and other soldier-support functions. The delivery figures establish that Ratnik was fielded at scale; they do not establish nuclear protection for the complete system.

What is Russia’s Sotnik combat suit?
Sotnik, or “Centurion,” is the proposed third-generation successor to Ratnik. In a 26 June 2019 announcement, Rostec said development was planned for 2020 and that Sotnik was expected to replace Ratnik in 2025. The cited announcements describe a development target, not proof that full Sotnik fielding occurred in 2025.
Protection and blast-resistance goals
Rostec’s January 2021 material said Sotnik would use high-strength ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fiber and eventually reach a higher protection class than its predecessor. It claimed a future ability to stop a fragment traveling at up to 670 m/s while reducing the impact through special shock-absorbing materials. Rostec also listed anti-mine and anti-blast boots.

“Up to 670 m/s” is a stated design or future capability, not a published battlefield test result. The material does not specify the fragment’s mass, impact angle, hit location, number of impacts or the protection available across the whole ensemble.
Signature management
The announced Sotnik concept included an anti-thermal suit intended to make a soldier harder to detect with infrared sensors, anti-radar camouflage and an electrochromic “chameleon” material whose appearance could change. These features address infrared and radar visibility; they are not nuclear shielding and should not be read as protection from blast or radiation.

Digital, medical and drone integration
Janes reported that the planned ensemble comprised eight subsystems spanning communications, protection, weapons, information and food. Reported features included projected commands and maps through protective goggles, quantum sensors for health monitoring and links to micro-unmanned aerial vehicles. These are planned integrations described in reporting, not a confirmed specification for every issued suit.

Weight target
Janes reported a Sotnik target weight of about 20 kg, roughly 20% below Ratnik. That figure is a target from 2019–2020 reporting, not a measured weight for a fully fielded production suit. The cited Rostec releases do not state a directly comparable Ratnik weight.

Ratnik and Sotnik compared
| Comparison | Ratnik | Sotnik |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Fielded second-generation system; Rostec reported almost 300,000 sets delivered over eight years by December 2020. | Planned third-generation successor; the cited material does not confirm full fielding. |
| Publicly reported scale | More than 60 elements in Rostec’s December 2020 description; a 2017 description counted 59 items. | Eight planned subsystems, according to Janes. |
| Weight | Not stated in the cited Rostec releases. | About 20 kg target, approximately 20% lighter than Ratnik (Janes, 2019–2020 reporting). |
| Fragment and blast protection | Not stated in the cited material as a single system-wide performance figure. | Anti-blast boots and a future target to stop a fragment traveling up to 670 m/s, with impact damping (Rostec, January 2021). |
| Infrared and radar signature | Not stated in the cited material. | Planned infrared-concealing clothing, anti-radar camouflage and electrochromic “chameleon” material. |
| Digital, health and drone functions | Not stated in the cited material as the Sotnik-style integrated set. | Planned goggle displays, health-monitoring sensors and micro-UAV links. |
| Nuclear-related claim | A 100-gram mechanical watch was claimed to keep operating through nuclear electromagnetic effects (Rostec representatives, reported by Live Science, 13 October 2017). | No separate nuclear-resistance performance claim is established in the cited announcements. |
When was Sotnik supposed to replace Ratnik?
Rostec’s June 2019 announcement set out development for 2020 and an expected Ratnik replacement in 2025. Janes’ reporting from the 2019–2020 period described the same general timetable and the proposed technical goals. Those dates are planning statements. The cited material contains no authoritative confirmation that the complete Sotnik system entered service on schedule, so “replaced Ratnik in 2025” should not be presented as an established deployment fact.
How to read the nuclear-resistant claim
- Identify the component. The claim applies to an unnamed mechanical wristwatch associated with Ratnik, not to the armor ensemble.
- Identify the hazard. The stated hazard is a nuclear weapon’s electromagnetic emission or pulse. That is only one effect of a detonation.
- Separate design goals from demonstrated performance. Sotnik’s 670 m/s fragment figure, 20 kg mass and 2025 replacement date are reported targets or plans, not proof of universal field performance.
- Look for test conditions. Without published test details, the watch statement cannot be converted into a survival guarantee for equipment or personnel.
In practical terms, Russia’s headline-grabbing “nuclear-resistant combat suit” story is about keeping one mechanical accessory running during an electromagnetic event. Ratnik is a fielded equipment system, while Sotnik is a planned, more integrated successor whose protection, sensing and signature-management claims remain tied to announced objectives rather than a demonstrated nuclear-proof suit.
