Handle a failed subscription renewal as a recovery workflow, not a command to keep charging: identify why it failed, retry only when another attempt makes sense, help the customer take any required action, and decide in advance what happens to the invoice and access when recovery ends. The right timing and limits depend on the payment failure, processor, payment method, customer context, and applicable network rules.
1. Classify the failed payment before choosing a response
Start with the processor’s decline reason and any advice returned with the failed attempt. A retry can be useful for a temporary problem, but it will not correct an expired card number or complete authentication the customer has not performed.

| Failure pattern | Practical response |
|---|---|
| Insufficient funds or another potentially temporary decline | Consider a later attempt if the processor permits it. The timing should reflect the payment method and customer context rather than a schedule applied indiscriminately to every decline. |
| Expired, replaced, or incorrect payment details | Ask the customer to update the payment method. A retry against unchanged details is unlikely to solve the underlying problem. |
| Authentication required | Give the customer a way to complete the required authentication. For Stripe subscriptions, Stripe says authorization-required failures such as 3-D Secure are not retried automatically under ordinary retry settings. |
| Issuer advice says not to retry | Do not ignore the advice or repeatedly submit the same payment. Follow the processor’s guidance and, where appropriate, ask the customer to contact their card issuer. |
| Generic or unclear decline | Use what the processor actually reports; do not claim to know the issuer’s reason when it is not disclosed. Stripe notes that generic declines can leave the precise reason unclear, in which case the customer may need to contact their issuer. |
| Technical or integration problem | Investigate the payment flow and operational data before treating the failure as a customer funding issue. Review patterns by payment method, geography, and time to spot recurring integration or service problems. |
Keep the decline information for each attempt, including any processor advice. A useful failed-payment process distinguishes a customer-correctable issue from a transient failure and from a failure for which another attempt is inappropriate.
2. Set a selective retry policy with a clear limit
Choose either the retry controls provided by the billing processor or a documented internal policy. Define both a maximum number of attempts and a final recovery deadline; an open-ended retry loop leaves customers and account state in limbo.

More attempts are not automatically better. Stripe’s card-decline documentation says networks limit reattempts, recommends at most eight retries for charges that permit retries, and warns that repeated attempts can increase declines. This is Stripe’s guidance, not a universal limit for every processor, payment rail, or merchant. Confirm the rules and controls that apply to your own setup, and do not retry when the decline advice says not to.
Stripe Billing: Smart Retries and custom controls
Stripe Billing’s Smart Retries uses payment and contextual signals to select retry timing; Stripe also documents controls for maximum attempts and the final retry day. Stripe says its model may select a retry days in the future and gives insufficient funds on a debit card as an example where the recovery window may need to include the next payment period. Treat these as Stripe product guidance, not as a universal schedule or promise of recovery. If using a different processor, verify its own retry behavior rather than assuming Stripe’s controls or model apply.

3. Make the next customer action clear and secure
When customer action could resolve the failure, send a notice that identifies the payment problem without overstating what you know about its cause. Give the customer a secure route to update payment details or complete authentication, and explain what will happen next if they do nothing.
- For outdated or replaced card details, direct the customer to a secure payment-method update flow.
- For authentication-required payments, make the authentication step available; a retry engine alone cannot complete it for the customer.
- Where supported by the issuer, network, and region, card account updater functionality may refresh expired or replaced credentials. Coverage varies, so do not promise an update will occur.
- For a generic decline whose precise cause is unavailable, avoid presenting a guess as fact; the issuer may be able to explain the decline.
Stripe’s recovery tools include customer notifications and payment-update functionality, but the exact available flows depend on the product configuration. Check the processor’s current documentation for the merchant’s region, payment methods, and integration.

4. Decide what happens when retries end
Before enabling retries, specify the terminal state for a fully retried invoice and make account access follow that policy. Depending on what the billing system supports and what fits the service, the invoice or subscription may remain unpaid, be canceled, be paused, or follow another defined policy. Set any grace period explicitly rather than letting it emerge accidentally from retry timing.
Test the full lifecycle, not just an isolated failed invoice. Stripe documents that one invoice’s retry window can overlap the schedule for a later invoice. Check what happens to invoice status, subscription status, customer notices, entitlements, and service access when that overlap occurs, including when the customer updates a payment method partway through recovery.

5. Compare billing and recovery setups by operating capability
When selecting or configuring a billing system, compare the work it can actually do and how its states affect your service. The options below are evaluation dimensions, not claims that every provider offers each capability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Capability | What to check |
|---|---|
| Retry control | Can you set a fixed schedule or use model-selected timing, and configure both maximum attempts and a final retry deadline? |
| Decline handling | Does the system expose decline and advice information, and can it suppress futile or disallowed retries? |
| Customer action | Can you tailor notices, provide a hosted payment-update route, support alternate payment methods, and enable required authentication such as 3-D Secure? |
| Lifecycle policy | Can you implement the intended unpaid, pause, cancellation, or grace-period state and synchronize it with service access? |
| Observability | Can you attribute recovered payments, examine decline reasons, and access reports or exports through a dashboard or API? |
| Coverage | Are the needed payment methods, currencies, and regions supported? Check regional availability of account updater features and applicable network constraints. |
| Operational fit | What integration and webhook handling are required? Can the team detect failures and route difficult cases to support? |
6. Measure recovered outcomes, not attempts
A high retry count does not show that a recovery process is working. Review completed outcomes, including the share and value of failed invoices recovered, time to recovery, payment-method updates, authentication completions, and subscriptions that end unpaid, paused, or canceled under your policy. Segment results by decline reason, payment method, geography, and timing where the data permits.

Also look for unnecessary attempts, customer complaints, and failures that indicate a technical problem. Stripe describes recovery dashboards and downloadable reports for its products; reporting detail and availability depend on the setup. The cited material establishes no universal target recovery rate, so set goals from your own baseline and customer experience rather than treating a vendor figure as an industry benchmark.
How to interpret Stripe’s published recovery figures
In a Stripe engineering article published January 23, 2024, Stripe reported that 25% of lapsed subscriptions were purely due to payment failures and that subscriptions recovered by Stripe tools after being at risk of involuntary churn continued for an average of seven more months. Stripe also described Smart Retries as recovering $9 in revenue for every $1 customers spend on Billing, and said more than 500 attributes are used to train Smart Retries. These are vendor-reported figures presented by Stripe in its own product context, not independent industry-wide estimates or a forecast for an individual business.
