To convert a logo to a vector file, first look for an original SVG or vector PDF so you can avoid tracing. If you only have a PNG or JPEG, use a vector editor such as Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape to trace the image, then inspect and repair the resulting paths before saving an editable master and exporting the format your printer, website, or fabricator requests. Automatic tracing approximates the bitmap; it does not guarantee a perfect copy.
Before tracing, check whether the logo is already vector
Look for the original logo file or a PDF supplied with the design. A PDF can contain vector artwork, but it can also contain only a raster image, so the extension alone does not tell you what is inside. In a vector editor, check whether the logo consists of selectable paths and shapes or is just one placed bitmap. Inkscape’s FAQ explains the distinction between vector objects and an imported raster image.

If you find genuine vector artwork in an existing file, reuse it rather than tracing a lower-quality copy. If the only source is a bitmap, choose a workflow based on the logo’s shapes, colors, and lettering.

| Method | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Illustrator Image Trace | Raster logos that need automatic tracing with adjustable presets and options | Creates editable vector artwork, but edges and shapes may need correction. Trace speed depends on image resolution, according to Adobe’s Image Trace instructions. |
| Inkscape Trace Bitmap | Clear silhouettes and logos with a small number of colors | Color tracing can produce many separate objects, which may be difficult to edit. The Inkscape tracing guide cautions that a perfectly faithful vector-only reproduction should not be expected. |
| Manual redraw or hybrid cleanup | Logos where precise geometry or typography matters more than preserving every pixel irregularity | Use the bitmap as a reference and redraw key shapes or lettering with paths. Whether this takes less time than tracing depends on the particular artwork; there is no universal threshold. |
Use automatic tracing for simple artwork
High-contrast silhouettes and clean, limited-color marks are generally easier to trace and edit than artwork with noisy edges, detailed gradients, small lettering, or many colors. These qualities make tracing a useful starting point, not a guarantee of finished artwork.

Redraw details that need to be exact
A traced outline may look acceptable at normal size but reveal uneven curves, distorted corners, or damaged letter counters when enlarged. Keep the bitmap visible as a reference and repair or redraw the parts where shape accuracy matters. The choice to trace, redraw, or combine both is a design judgment rather than a measured rule.
Convert a logo with Adobe Illustrator
Adobe’s Image Trace workflow, in instructions last updated February 26, 2026, turns a placed raster image into editable vector artwork. The available presets and controls depend on the selected tracing setup; Adobe notes that enhanced presets can support features such as gradients, shapes, transparency, and automatic grouping.

- Open or create an Illustrator document, then choose File > Place to add the raster logo.
- Select the placed image and open Window > Image Trace.
- Choose a preset suited to the source, such as a simple silhouette or a multicolor mark, and inspect the result.
- Adjust the available tracing options to improve the edges, colors, and shapes.
- Zoom in to check important contours and lettering. Correct or redraw areas that the trace has not reproduced cleanly.
- Keep an editable source file, then export a separate copy in the format your recipient requests.
To discard the trace and restore the source image in its place, Adobe documents the command Object > Image Trace > Release. See Adobe’s Image Trace instructions for the current workflow details.
Convert a logo with Inkscape
- Import the bitmap and select it.
- Choose Path > Trace Bitmap to open the tracing controls.
- Choose a tracing approach suited to the image and create the vector result.
- Move the new result away from the original temporarily so you can inspect it on its own.
- Check the paths, colors, and lettering; simplify or repair the result where needed, or redraw details that do not trace well.
- Save an editable SVG master and export a delivery copy in the format required for the job.
The traced result is placed directly over the original, so it is easy to mistake the bitmap beneath it for a successful trace. Moving the result aside makes it possible to inspect the actual vector output. Inkscape’s Tracing an Image guide describes the workflow and its limitations.

Inspect and clean up the vector result
Compare the vector artwork with the bitmap at normal display size and close zoom. Check the details that define the logo, not just its overall silhouette.
- Inspect letter shapes, inner spaces in letters, curves, corners, alignment, and color boundaries.
- Check that the background is transparent or white as intended.
- Look for stray objects, unnecessary nodes, gaps, and overlaps.
- Separate the trace from the original bitmap while checking it, so the source image does not disguise missing vector paths.
- Confirm that the exported file contains paths or shapes rather than only an embedded copy of the raster logo.
If the logo contains decorative text, converting the text to paths can preserve its appearance when the recipient does not have the original font. Keep a separate editable source version if you may need to revise the wording or typography later.

Save a master and export the right format
Keep an editable vector master, then make recipient-specific exports. SVG is a useful editable master for web and vector-editor workflows. PDF can contain vector artwork and raster images, and some features may change or rasterize during export. Inkscape’s PDF export guide recommends keeping the SVG source instead of relying only on PDF.

| Format | Typical role | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| SVG | Editable master and web or vector-editor workflows | An SVG file can still contain an embedded bitmap. Open it in a vector editor and inspect or select its components. |
| Print delivery when requested | Check that the artwork remains vector where expected and review whether effects were rasterized. Inkscape’s guidance of at least 300 dpi applies to filtered objects in print PDFs, not to vector paths. | |
| EPS or AI | Specific print or design workflows that request them | Inkscape’s FAQ lists EPS and AI among formats it can open or import; compatibility and feature preservation depend on the application and file. |
| PNG or JPEG | Screen placements, previews, or other raster-only uses | These are raster exports, not substitutes for the editable vector master. |
Before delivery, ask the printer, sign shop, website platform, or cutter operator which format, color mode or profile, and production settings they require. Requirements depend on the destination, so do not assume one vector format is accepted everywhere.
