To make a song with an AI music generator, start with one clear idea, describe the sound and mood you want, then generate a draft and revise it by listening. You can let the tool write lyrics or provide your own; before sharing or monetizing the result, check the current rules for the service, plan, and track.
Plan the song before you open a generator
Choose one subject or story and decide what you want the listener to feel or remember. A focused idea gives you a clearer prompt and makes it easier to judge whether the output works.

Next, choose a broad genre or style, mood, energy level, and a few defining instruments or vocal qualities. Keep the first prompt compact: changing just one or two details between attempts makes it easier to hear what affected the result.

A [genre/style] song about [subject/story], with a [mood] feel, [tempo or energy], [key instruments], and [vocal description]. Build toward [chorus or climax] and end with [ending idea].
For example: “A warm indie-pop song about a late-night train ride, with intimate vocals, gentle guitar, a brighter chorus, and a quiet ending.” This is a creative direction, not a guarantee that a generator will produce those exact elements. Treat the first output as a draft.

Choose whether to use generated or original lyrics
You can ask a generator to create lyrics, or write your own and provide them if the service supports it. Suno’s Custom mode supports user-provided lyrics and additional context. Suno says users retain ownership and rights to original lyrics they input; only submit material you have the right to use. Its distribution guidance also addresses the rules for songs made on different plans.
Original lyrics are a direct human contribution, but they do not automatically settle who owns or can copyright every musical element the generator creates. Copyright treatment depends on the jurisdiction and the actual human contribution.

Generate, listen, and revise
- Enter the prompt. Add your subject and musical direction in the generator’s prompt or style fields. If you have original lyrics, use the service’s custom or lyrics option where available.
- Set any available duration or format controls. Interfaces and export options vary. Udio’s beginner guide, dated March 14, 2025, described a 32-second default clip and an option for a longer first song at that time; those details are dated examples, not universal or necessarily current settings. See its song creation guide.
- Generate a draft and listen critically. Check whether the mood fits, whether the words are intelligible, and whether the arrangement feels complete. Note what works and what needs to change.
- Make focused revisions. Adjust one or two prompt details or lyrics at a time, then generate again. If the service offers continuation or extension, use it to develop an intro, outro, or missing section; availability and controls depend on the current service.
- Keep a record. Save the prompt, your original lyrics, the generation date, and relevant plan or download details. This is useful record-keeping, not a guarantee of ownership or legal protection.
Understand what prompting can—and cannot—control
A prompt communicates creative direction, but it does not mean you authored every musical element the system generates. Suno’s copyright guidance says prompting alone does not constitute creation of a song for U.S. copyright purposes. More direct human contributions, such as original lyrics, a personally written melody, or human editing and arrangement, may matter to an authorship analysis; the effect depends on the contribution and applicable law.
Commercial-use permission and copyright protection are separate questions. Suno warns that a grant to use a track commercially does not guarantee that the track is copyright-protected. It also says fully AI-generated music may not qualify for copyright protection in the United States, while human-written lyrics may be registrable separately; treatment can differ by region or registrar. For a consequential release, consult the relevant copyright office or a qualified music-rights professional in your jurisdiction.

Check rights and export rules before publishing
Read the rules for the exact service, plan, and track, and verify that the version of the terms in force when you create and download the song covers your intended use. As of the cited pages, Suno says tracks downloaded while subscribed receive commercial-use rights and may be used for distribution or in film, television, and video games. Its distribution guidance says songs made on the free plan are limited to noncommercial use and that a later paid subscription does not retroactively license an earlier song. Suno’s Terms of Service add conditions: you must have rights to submitted material; free/basic output is for personal, noncommercial use; and permitted commercial use depends on a qualifying approved download. The terms also say copyright may not vest in output and that third-party platform rules still apply. See Suno’s paid-subscription rights page and distribution guidance for its stated policies, and recheck them close to release.
Do not assume that service permission makes a track exclusive, copyrightable, or acceptable to a distributor or social platform. Check the rules of the platform where you plan to publish as well as those of the generator.
For Udio, the cited creation guide is dated March 14, 2025. The Associated Press reported on October 30, 2025 that Udio and Universal Music Group announced a settlement and licensing agreements and that Udio stopped downloads amid a service transition. That report does not establish Udio’s status today. Check Udio’s current official help and terms before relying on older instructions about exporting or using a track. Read the Associated Press report for the dated account.
Compare generators for your workflow
Before committing to a service, compare the features and rules that matter to the song you want to make:
Quick Recap
- Creative input: Can you add original lyrics or detailed style direction?
- Iteration: Can you revise prompts, regenerate, or extend a song?
- Output and access: What can you download or export now, and under what conditions? Check current availability rather than relying on an older tutorial.
- Usage rights: What do the current plan and terms permit for personal use, distribution, and commercial use? Do rights depend on when you generated or downloaded the track?
- Copyright and platform compatibility: Does the service distinguish usage permission from copyright protection, and will the destination platform accept the track under its own rules?
