Use OCRmyPDF with Tesseract to add searchable text to a scanned invoice PDF, then build a separate extraction and validation step if you need invoice fields such as supplier, date, invoice number, or totals. OCR makes the page text-readable; it does not by itself turn an invoice into reliable structured accounting data.
What OCR does—and what it does not do
A PDF may contain page images, selectable digital text, or a mixture of both. Tesseract recognizes text in images; OCRmyPDF coordinates PDF processing and adds a recognized text layer to the document. Its documentation describes the result as searchable scanned PDFs: OCRmyPDF’s introduction.

In the documented flow, pages are rendered to images for OCR, then the recognized text is integrated into the PDF. The current v17 documentation describes pypdfium2 as an alternative to Ghostscript for rendering; see the OCRmyPDF stable introduction for the workflow and renderer details. OCRmyPDF can also correct rotation and deskew pages, but those image adjustments do not guarantee that invoice values are recognized correctly.
The output is a searchable PDF, not a validated record of invoice fields. Extracting fields requires additional logic to interpret the recognized text and, where relevant, its position and relationship to other text on the page.

Build the workflow in stages
- Inspect representative PDFs. Determine whether files are scanned, digitally generated, or hybrid. Include examples from the suppliers and languages you expect to process; mixed-content documents need not be treated as image-only files.
- Install OCRmyPDF and its dependencies. It is a Python application and library, but its PDF rendering and OCR pipeline relies on installed programs such as Tesseract and Ghostscript. Install appropriate Tesseract language data for your invoice languages. The project repository documents installation routes, dependencies, and language-pack guidance.
- Run OCR on sample files. Use OCRmyPDF to process representative documents. Enable rotation correction or deskewing when scans require it, and select the renderer supported by your deployment and the current OCRmyPDF documentation.
- Verify the resulting text layer. Open the output in a PDF viewer, search for text, and compare important recognized values with the image. OCR can produce incorrect text, so a searchable layer should not be treated as an authoritative accounting record. Tesseract’s FAQ also describes searchable PDF output with a hidden OCR text layer.
- Extract and validate fields separately. Parse the OCR text and, when needed, page-layout cues to identify fields. Check required values and relationships such as totals and line-item arithmetic, and route uncertain records for human review.
Choose the right level of PDF handling
For a first Python workflow, OCRmyPDF plus Tesseract provides PDF orchestration: it processes pages and integrates OCR text into the document. A lower-level approach can rasterize pages and invoke an OCR engine directly, offering more control over rendering and preprocessing but leaving more PDF handling to your application. OCRmyPDF’s documentation warns that naïvely rasterizing and rebuilding PDFs can lose PDF details; its approach integrates the OCR layer into the original PDF workflow.
Choose based on what the application must deliver. If users need searchable copies, a PDF-focused OCR stage may be enough. If they need structured invoice data, compare extraction approaches on field coverage, handling of variable layouts, review and correction workflow, deployment requirements, and results on your own documents.

Why invoice extraction needs validation
Invoices differ in language, scan quality, orientation, and layout. Even a legible text layer may contain a misread digit, misplaced decimal point, or text in an unexpected order. Build a validation set from the suppliers and document conditions the system will actually encounter before deciding whether any fields can be processed without review.
A 2022 OCRMiner paper reported data recovery of 90% for its English set and 88% for its Czech set. Those figures describe that paper’s system and datasets, which combined open-source OCR with text analysis and layout features. They are not an accuracy benchmark for OCRmyPDF, Tesseract alone, or a different invoice collection. The study is available at the OCRMiner paper.
