What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes, but only when trusted application code—not the voice assistant or language model—decides whether a write is allowed and carries it out under tightly limited permissions. Treat recognized speech and model-generated actions as untrusted proposals. Before anything changes, the system should verify the user, authorize the exact operation and target, validate the proposed data, require approval where the consequences warrant it, and record the result safely.
These are defense-in-depth design principles, not a guarantee that a particular deployment is secure. The right approval rules and identity checks depend on the users, data, and impact involved.

What makes a voice-driven database write safe?
A voice assistant should translate a request into a possible action, not grant itself permission to perform that action. The application or a trusted database-facing service must independently enforce access rules. OWASP’s guidance for AI agents and excessive agency emphasizes checking authorization in downstream systems rather than relying on a model to decide what is allowed.
That separation matters because speech recognition can mishear a request, and a language model can produce malformed or manipulated tool arguments. A confident response from the assistant does not establish that the caller is entitled to change a record.

A safer path from spoken request to database write
-
Turn speech into a constrained proposal
Convert the request into a typed action with defined fields, such as an operation, record identifier, and proposed value. Treat both the recognized transcript and the model-generated fields as untrusted input; neither should be executable SQL.
-
Bind the request to a verified identity and scope
Associate the request with a verified user or session and the data that identity is permitted to access. A voice session identifying someone is not, by itself, permission to change every record or field.
-
Authorize the exact operation and target
Check that the identified user may perform this operation on this record and these fields. Apply the check on every request, including retries and indirect tool calls. Deny by default when the operation, target, scope, or permission is missing or unclear. OWASP’s Authorization Cheat Sheet says permission should be validated on every request regardless of how it was initiated.

-
Validate the proposed change
Check the input against an expected schema, types, allowed values, ranges, and the application’s business rules. Reject malformed or out-of-scope proposals before issuing a database command. For SQL-backed data, use parameterized queries so values are treated as data rather than SQL syntax.
-
Obtain approval when the impact calls for it
For a consequential change, present a specific preview and require approval or another explicit policy gate before execution. The approval needs to match the operation, target, and parameters being executed; a prior, generic “yes” should not authorize a materially different action.
-
Execute a narrow operation with limited privileges
Use a dedicated, least-privileged database identity for the assistant-facing service and expose purpose-specific operations, such as “update the caller’s delivery preference.” Do not give a general assistant unrestricted credentials or a tool that accepts arbitrary SQL, table names, or column names.

-
Record the outcome
Write a protected, structured audit record containing the relevant actor, action, target, time, authorization and approval outcome, and execution result. If a consequential write depends on successful approval validation or reliable audit recording, stop the write if either check fails.

Authentication is not authorization
Authentication establishes which user or session is making a request; authorization determines whether that identity may carry out the requested action on the requested resource. A system must check the latter for each operation. OWASP recommends keeping authorization enforcement close to the protected resource and preserving the user’s effective scope as a request passes through a service. A shared service credential must not silently give one user broader rights than they have.
Where the workflow permits, separate read and write roles and use different credentials for different trust distinctions. Give each identity only the capabilities it needs. Unknown operations, ambiguous targets, missing permissions, and failed policy checks should result in no write.

Validation and authorization solve different problems
Validation answers whether the proposed input has an allowed shape and value. Authorization answers whether this user may make this change. A well-formed update can still target a record the caller is not allowed to change, while an authorized caller can still submit invalid data. Apply both checks; parameterized queries protect SQL structure but do not grant permission.

OWASP recommends human approval for high-impact or irreversible agent actions, with database deletion as an example of a critical action. Consider a specific approval gate for changes that are hard to reverse, affect other people, alter sensitive data, or have financial, administrative, or external effects.

What an audit log should capture—and what it should not
For accountability and investigation, keep structured records that identify the acting user or service, operation type, target resource, time, authorization and approval decisions, and execution result. Restrict access to the logs and avoid putting credentials or unnecessary sensitive personal data in plain text.
An audit log is detective evidence, not a preventive control: it does not stop an unauthorized write. Permission checks and input validation do that. If policy requires a dependable audit record before a high-risk action, inability to create or verify that record should block execution.
Common unsafe designs to avoid
- Model decides whether a request is allowed: the model may interpret intent, but trusted application or database-facing code must enforce policy.
- One broad credential for every caller: this can expand an individual user’s effective access unless the service preserves and checks that user’s scope.
- Generic SQL-writing tools: arbitrary SQL or caller-selected table and column names create a much broader execution surface than narrow, purpose-limited operations.
- Confirmation without a precise preview: approval detached from the action and its target may not represent consent to the write that actually runs.
- Logging secrets or treating logs as access control: protect log contents, and do not mistake a record of an action for permission to perform it.
What to decide for a real deployment
General OWASP guidance establishes design principles, not a security assessment of a particular voice platform, database engine, jurisdiction, or data classification. A deployment should set its identity-verification method, user and record scopes, approval thresholds, and log access and retention rules against its actual threat model and policies. No single biometric method, approval threshold, or retention period is established as universal by this guidance.
