If your iPhone started draining faster or feeling warm after updating to iOS 27, first check Settings > Battery. Apple says update-related work can continue in the background and temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance. Wait a few days, then check Battery again. If the drain continues, use the activity shown there to guide the next steps; a temperature warning requires immediate cooling.
Check whether update-related activity is still running
Open Settings > Battery and look above Daily Usage for battery suggestions or an insight such as Ongoing iOS Update. Apple says these insights can identify background activity that temporarily affects battery life and thermal performance. You can use the iPhone while that work continues, but the impact may remain until the activity finishes. Apple advises checking again after a few days; it does not give a firm deadline for recovery.

Apple Support explains that some tasks related to an update continue in the background and might affect battery life and thermal performance. A September 15, 2026 report by 9to5Mac described setup activity such as indexing data and files, downloading assets, and updating apps. The same report attributed a larger impact and potentially several days to iOS 27-related Siri reindexing. That timeline is the publication’s reporting, not an Apple-published recovery estimate.
Find what is using battery
In Settings > Battery, review the Daily Usage chart and App and System Activity Usage. Compare today with the recent seven-day view, then inspect the apps and system activity listed as using power. The labels point to different causes and call for different responses:

- Background Activity: An app has been active in the background. Check whether it is an app you recently used or one that is repeatedly prominent in the usage list.
- No Mobile Coverage or Low Signal: The phone may be using more energy to maintain a connection. If practical, use Wi-Fi or move to an area with better reception.
- Notifications: Check which app is generating them and adjust its notification settings if that activity is unnecessary.
Use the activity actually shown on your iPhone rather than disabling features at random. Online reports such as “Anyone else experiencing battery drain after iOS 27 update?” are individual accounts, not evidence of how widespread an issue is or what caused a particular phone’s drain.
Reduce avoidable power use where the evidence points
Apple says Wi-Fi generally uses less battery than cellular for internet access, and a stronger Wi-Fi or cellular signal uses less energy than a weak one. On supported iPhones, 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. If you are somewhere without coverage and do not need connectivity, Airplane Mode may help.

Low Power Mode reduces or disables selected features, including Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects. It can be useful when you need to stretch the remaining charge, but it changes how some features work. Adaptive Power is not available on every iPhone; Apple lists it for supported models running iOS 26 or later.

An iPhone may feel warmer during setup, a backup restore, a major software update, wireless charging, demanding apps, or high-quality video streaming. Apple says the device should cool when the process or activity ends. Without a temperature warning, Apple says you can keep using it.

Apple lists an ambient operating range of 0–35 °C (32–95 °F) and a storage range of −20–45 °C (−4–113 °F). Avoid leaving the phone in a hot car or in prolonged direct sunlight. When an iPhone gets too warm, it may slow or stop charging, dim or blank its display, weaken its mobile signal, or reduce performance.
If the screen displays a temperature warning, stop using the phone, turn it off, move it to a cooler place away from direct sunlight, and let it cool before using it again.

Check Battery Health if the drain persists
If battery drain remains after the update-related activity has settled, check the battery’s condition:
- iPhone 15 or later: Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health.
- iPhone 14 or earlier: Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
Apple says to consider battery replacement if Battery Health displays Service. Post-update drain by itself does not establish that the battery needs replacement; persistent app activity, weak signal, and battery condition are separate things to assess.
