Keep a provisional transcript draft separate from text you have accepted as final. Replace that draft whenever a new partial result arrives; when the speech API explicitly marks a result final, commit it once and clear the draft. Partial results are changing hypotheses, so appending each callback’s full text can duplicate words, and the final transcript can differ from the last partial.
Model the transcript as a draft and committed text
A partial result is a snapshot of the recognizer’s current hypothesis, not necessarily a new segment to concatenate. A recognizer may revise earlier words as it hears more speech. The speech_to_text package specifically cautions that “the final result may be different from the last partial result.”

Keep two pieces of state for an active listening session:
- Committed transcript: text accepted from finalized results in earlier turns.
- Draft transcript: the latest provisional hypothesis for the current turn.
On a partial callback, replace the draft and leave committed text unchanged. On a final callback, commit the final transcript once, then clear or close that draft. The result’s finality flag—not the fact that a callback is the latest one received so far—determines whether it is safe to commit.

In Apple’s Speech API, SFSpeechRecognitionResult.isFinal indicates that recognition is complete and transcriptions are final. See Apple’s isFinal documentation.
Check whether results are cumulative or independent segments
Replacing the draft is appropriate when callbacks deliver successive full-session hypotheses, as described in the speech_to_text example. It is not a universal rule for every engine: some APIs may emit independent finalized segments. Verify whether your selected API’s result represents a cumulative hypothesis or a new segment before implementing merge logic. If finalized segments are independent, append each segment once while still keeping any provisional text separate.

Handle the Flutter package lifecycle, not just transcript callbacks
The maintained speech_to_text listen API defaults to partialResults = true. Its documentation describes a device-specific package intended for commands and short phrases rather than continuous conversion or always-on listening. Initialize SpeechToText once for the app, check that initialization succeeds, and start and end individual listening sessions as needed.

The package documents listening status, a done status when listening is complete, stop and cancel operations, and listen/pause duration limits that platform constraints may shorten. On stop, timeout, cancellation, or error, close the active session and explicitly choose what happens to an unfinished draft:

- Preserve it as visibly unconfirmed text so the user can review or retry.
- Discard it if the product treats canceled input as unwanted.
- Commit it only if the API identifies it as final, or if the user explicitly approves it and the UI makes that choice clear.
Do not silently promote the latest partial to confirmed transcript just because the session ended.
Prevent late or duplicate commits
Start each listening session with a fresh draft. If callbacks might arrive after a session has stopped or a new one has begun, associate them with a session identifier and ignore callbacks that belong to an obsolete session. Make final commits idempotent—for example, track whether that session’s final result has already been committed or use a stable result identity when the API provides one.

Package history illustrates why this guard matters: its changelog records an iOS fix to make the last result reliably final after pause/listen timeout or direct stop, and an Android 10-era workaround where destroying the recognizer could stop listening immediately without reporting results still in process. These are version-specific implementation notes, not guarantees about all current devices. Check the package changelog for the version you ship.

Test platform and termination behavior on your supported targets
The package documentation lists Android, iOS, macOS, and web support; it marks Windows speech as beta with known issues in the documentation version examined. Browser behavior can vary: the API reference describes aggregation and duplicate behavior on some mobile browsers, including Chrome on Android. Pin the package version and test the operating systems, locales, and browser engines your app supports rather than assuming callbacks arrive identically everywhere.

Include these cases in device testing:
- Partial results revise words already shown in the draft.
- A final result differs from the preceding partial and is committed once.
- Manual stop, silence timeout, pause, and cancellation each close the session as intended.
- Permission denial and recognizer errors do not leave a stale draft presented as confirmed text.
- Callbacks arriving late or more than once do not alter a later session or duplicate committed text.
The package’s API reference and example implementation document the package behavior and lifecycle details. Actual results still depend on the target platform and package version.
