On Windows, NVIDIA FrameView is the broadest documented option for mixed-vendor single-GPU PCs; NVIDIA, AMD and some PC makers also offer overlays for their own hardware. Check which sensors your chosen tool actually displays, then judge readings against your exact hardware’s specifications—not a universal “safe gaming temperature.”
Choose a monitoring tool that fits your PC
The right option depends on your graphics card, PC maker, and game. The table summarizes the documented features; availability and sensor readings can still vary by hardware, software version, and game.

| Tool | Hardware and system | Temperature readings and other features | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA FrameView 1.4 | Windows 10 and later; documented support for NVIDIA GeForce, AMD, and Intel single-GPU configurations | Overlay metrics include CPU and GPU temperature, frequency, and utilization; system data can be logged. | Supports DirectX 9–12, OpenGL, and Vulkan for capture. Its OSD is not supported in DX9/DX10 games, although data capture is logged. NVIDIA describes the tool as optimized for minimal overhead; that is the vendor’s claim, not an independent measurement. |
| NVIDIA App overlay | Desktop and laptop GeForce RTX and GeForce GTX 600 Series or newer, according to NVIDIA Support | Can show GPU temperature, frame rate, and clocks. | The cited support guidance documents GPU temperature, not CPU temperature. Overlay availability depends on eligible GeForce hardware. |
| AMD Radeon Overlay | AMD Radeon systems; availability depends on GPU and software version | OSD metrics include GPU temperature, utilization, engine and memory clocks, power, fan speed, CPU utilization, VRAM and system RAM utilization, and FPS. Supports CSV performance logging and sampling intervals from 1 to 10 seconds. | The documented metric list does not include CPU temperature. Pair it with another tool if you need a CPU reading. Temperature is displayed in Celsius. |
| Alienware Command Center 6.x performance overlay | Alienware machines using Command Center 6.x | Thermal view includes CPU and GPU temperatures and fan speeds. Dell documents Ctrl+Shift+Y to show or hide the overlay. | This is an OEM-specific option, not a general Windows feature. |
| Steam in-game performance monitor | Systems where Steam can query the relevant sensor | Can render performance data while playing; Steam identifies GPU temperature as the hottest sensor it can query. | Sensor coverage depends on what the system exposes. Confirm that the temperature metric appears on your machine; the cited support page does not establish a reliable setup procedure for every configuration. |
For a live view during a game
An OSD keeps the reading visible while a game is running. If you use NVIDIA hardware, NVIDIA App’s documented overlay focuses on GPU temperature. AMD’s overlay also focuses on GPU temperature, while listing CPU utilization rather than CPU temperature. For a documented CPU-and-GPU temperature view, consider FrameView or, on a supported Alienware PC, Command Center’s thermal view.
For a record of peaks and changes
FrameView can log system data, and AMD Radeon software supports CSV performance logging. Logging is useful when you would rather inspect readings after a session or compare how temperatures change over time.

- TEMPERATURE SELECTION: User selectable Fahrenheit and Celsius measurements for convenience and versatility
- WIDE MEASUREMENT RANGE: Measurement range of -40 to 482°F (-40 to 250°C) with room temperature accuracy of +/- 27°F (+/- 15°C)
- BACKLIT DISPLAY: Backlit display allows for easy viewing in low-light environments
- ADVANCED FUNCTIONS: Max/Min, Hold, and Average functions provide additional data analysis capabilities
- NON-MEDICAL DEVICE: Not intended for use on people or animals, complying with regulations and maintaining clear distinction from medical devices
Set up a useful gaming-temperature check
- Identify your hardware. Check your GPU vendor and, for an OEM laptop or desktop, the PC maker and model. Select a matching vendor or OEM overlay, or use FrameView if you need a documented cross-vendor Windows option.
- Choose only the metrics you need. Start with CPU temperature and GPU temperature. Add utilization and clock speed if you want to see whether temperatures coincide with a change in workload or performance. In NVIDIA App, NVIDIA documents Settings > Features to enable In-Game Overlay; press Alt+R for the default statistics shortcut, or use Alt+Z > Statistics > Configure heads up display to change displayed metrics. In Radeon Overlay, press Alt+R, open Performance Monitoring, and select metrics and their display location; Ctrl+Shift+O toggles the OSD. Shortcuts and labels may change with software updates.
- Play a representative session. Observe readings during a game you actually play, long enough to see whether temperatures settle or continue changing. There is no source-established benchmark duration that applies to every system.
- Record context if a reading stands out. Note the sensor label, temperature, whether it was brief or sustained, and what the clocks and performance were doing. A CPU package or core reading and a GPU hotspot or board reading are different sensors; do not treat their labels as interchangeable.
- Compare with the right specification. Look up the exact CPU or GPU model and, for a laptop or OEM system, its manufacturer’s thermal guidance. If high temperatures coincide with clock reductions or degraded performance, investigate cooling and system support guidance rather than treating one isolated peak as proof of failure.
Interpret the reading in context—not against a universal threshold
There is no universal safe gaming temperature. Thermal behavior depends on system design, ambient temperature, airflow, workload, and power consumption. Under a constant workload, a system can heat up and then settle when heat generation and dissipation balance. At a defined throttling trip point, the system may reduce performance to bring temperature down.
CPU limits are model-specific
Intel says its processors’ Tjunction max is usually 100–110°C, but that range describes typical model limits—not a recommended gaming target for every CPU. Intel advises checking the exact processor specification and notes that typical operating temperatures vary by system design and workload. AMD likewise says operating temperature depends on the cooler, airflow, ambient temperature, custom settings, and workload, and advises consulting the processor’s specified Tjmax. Do not apply Intel’s range to AMD processors.

GPU temperature depends on the sensor and model
A tool may expose different GPU temperature sensors, such as a board reading or hotspot reading. Check the exact sensor label and consult the GPU or PC maker’s specification for that model. A single blanket GPU temperature limit cannot be established for all gaming PCs.

A brief peak is not the same evidence as sustained heat accompanied by clock drops, reduced performance, or instability. Temperature, clocks, workload, and system behavior together are more useful for deciding whether to investigate than one number viewed in isolation.
