When a game crashes or a save stops loading, protect the original save first. Then use reversible checks—restart, updates, service-status checks, file verification, and a controlled retest—before reinstalling anything. To determine whether the game or one save is responsible, test a new game and, where possible, another title or application. If you contact support, provide reproducible steps, exact errors, system details, and the relevant logs or save files through the publisher’s approved upload process.
Identify the failure before changing anything
“The game is broken” can describe several different faults. Classifying the symptom determines which actions are safe:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Crash during launch: the game closes, freezes, or returns to the dashboard before reaching its menu.
- Crash during play: the game starts, but fails at a repeatable location, action, or loading transition.
- Save-read failure: the game launches normally, but one profile or save will not load.
- Save-write failure: the game runs, but saving produces an error, hangs, or loses recent progress.
- Service or account failure: several games or online features fail, or the problem follows a particular user account.
Write down the exact point of failure, the error wording or code, the date and time, and whether it happens every time. Do not delete a user, profile, save, or game installation while you are still determining the cause.
Preserve the original save
Before deleting, reinstalling, restoring databases, or attempting recovery, make a separate backup of the affected save if your platform and game allow it. Keep the untouched copy even if a cloud copy exists; synchronization can overwrite a damaged file with the newest state. Do not experiment on the only copy.

- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Use the account that created the save. Nintendo states that save data belongs to each user account and is stored in the console’s system memory. Deleting that account deletes its associated saves and they cannot be recovered. Confirm the selected account before testing, and never remove an account merely to see whether the problem disappears.
Backup options differ by title and platform. A USB drive may be useful for platform-supported backups or game-data management, but it cannot repair a save that is already corrupted. Follow the current instructions for your game and hardware; cloud, external, and system-memory behavior is not universal.
Use a reversible crash-triage sequence
Perform these checks in order and record what each one changes. Stop when the fault is resolved, or move to the next step only after the previous result is known.

- Reproduce once and capture evidence. Note the exact action that precedes the crash, the affected save or mode, the error code, and whether the failure is consistent. Capture a screenshot or short video if it is safe to do so.
- Restart the game and device. Fully close the game rather than resuming a suspended session, then restart the console or computer. A clean launch distinguishes a transient state from a repeatable fault.
- Install current system and game updates. On Windows, install pending Windows updates. On a PC, update video, sound, motherboard, and processor drivers. Do not assume a graphics-driver update alone covers chipset or audio components.
- Check service status and connectivity. If the failure involves login, matchmaking, cloud saves, or several titles, check the platform and publisher service-status pages and test the internet connection. A server outage cannot be repaired by reinstalling local files.
- Verify the installation. Use the storefront or platform’s file-verification function when available. This checks local game data without immediately removing the installation. The label and location vary by platform.
- Remove variables. Test without mods, overlays, unusual peripherals, extra monitors, or SLI/multi-GPU configurations. PlayStation’s PC guidance specifically calls out disabling SLI and extra monitors when relevant. Keep a note of every change so you can restore your normal setup.
- Run a controlled test. Start the game with a new or beginning save and repeat the action that failed. If possible, launch another game or application on the same device. This separates a title-specific problem from a broader hardware, operating-system, account, or storage problem.
- Reinstall only after save protection. Reinstallation is a later step, not a first response. Confirm that the original save is backed up and that you understand whether uninstalling removes local saves, mods, configuration files, or shader caches.
Some games provide an in-game crash-report option after a failure. Submit it when offered, but keep your own error notes and preserve the save before performing destructive troubleshooting.

PC-specific checks
Drivers and system state
Install current Windows updates, then update the video, sound, motherboard, and processor drivers recommended for your hardware. A crash that began immediately after a driver or operating-system update should be reported as a change in the ticket; do not conceal the timing by repeatedly changing drivers without recording versions.
Displays, GPUs, and peripherals
For a controlled test, use one monitor and the standard graphics adapter configuration. Temporarily disable SLI or other multi-GPU arrangements if applicable. Disconnect nonessential controllers, capture devices, USB hubs, and overlays. If the crash stops, reconnect one item at a time to identify the variable rather than leaving the cause uncertain.
Diagnostics to attach
When a publisher requests a Windows diagnostic report, run DxDiag and attach the generated report through the official support form. Include the game’s graphics settings and the driver versions that were active when the crash occurred. Do not send passwords, authentication tokens, or unrelated personal documents.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConsole launch failures
For a console game that will not start, begin with a restart and current system software. Confirm that the issue is not a platform or publisher outage, then verify that the correct user account owns the game and save. If the title is installed on USB extended storage, move it to internal storage for the test; PlayStation lists this as a troubleshooting step.

- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
PlayStation’s published sequence also includes restoring licenses, deleting and redownloading the game, and using Safe Mode cache or database recovery. Treat those as progressively more invasive actions:
- Restore licenses: appropriate when ownership or downloadable-content authorization appears to be the problem; it should not alter a save.
- Delete and redownload: use only after checking how local saves and settings are stored and confirming the backup.
- Safe Mode cache or database recovery: follow the current platform instructions exactly. Choose the non-destructive recovery option; do not select an option that initializes or erases the console unless support has specifically directed you and your backup is verified.
Menu names and recovery choices can change with system software. Use the current instructions for your console model rather than applying a procedure from a different generation.
Determine whether a save is corrupted
Compare a new game with the existing save
Start the title from the beginning without loading the affected save. Play far enough to repeat the action or reach the location that normally fails. If the new game works while the old save consistently crashes, the comparison is strong evidence that the problem is isolated to that save or its associated profile data.
Do not overwrite or delete the old file after this test. Preserve it and report both results: “new game loads and reaches the test point” and “existing save fails at [exact point].” Support staff can act on that contrast; a statement that the game “doesn’t work” is much less useful.

Test another title or application
If saving or reading fails, try another game or application on the same device. Nintendo recommends this comparison as part of its troubleshooting. A second title that saves normally points toward the original game, its save, or its account. Failures across multiple applications suggest a wider storage, system-software, account, or hardware issue.
Check the account and storage model
Verify the active user before interpreting missing data. On systems that store saves in internal memory, an account change can look like data loss. Cloud and backup behavior depends on the platform, subscription, game, and account; never assume that a cloud copy exists or that it is newer than the local file.
Know when recovery is not universal
There is no single recovery procedure for every game. A title may use local files, platform-managed saves, publisher servers, or a mixture. The available cloud restore, backup export, and recovery-mode options vary by platform and game. Once the original is preserved, follow the game’s current support page and avoid instructions intended for another title.

Support teams need reproducible technical evidence. PlayStation asks for the error code or message, a detailed description with steps to reproduce it, and a screenshot or video when possible. Naughty Dog asks players to verify game files, update drivers, and attach crash data and save files to the ticket. KRAFTON’s checklist additionally requests the platform, username or user ID, Windows DxDiag where applicable, in-game graphics settings, reproduction steps, screenshots or video, and a copy of the save folder when relevant.

Choose the next action by risk and scope
| Observation | Lowest-risk next step | What it suggests | Evidence to report |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only one title crashes; other applications work | Verify that title’s files, test without mods or unusual peripherals, then use the publisher’s instructions | Title installation, configuration, account, or save-specific fault | Version, location, save used, and repeatability |
| New save works; old save always fails | Keep the old save untouched and contact the publisher | Likely save or profile corruption rather than a complete installation failure | Side-by-side old-save/new-save results |
| Several games or applications fail to save or read data | Check system storage, account selection, and platform recovery guidance | Broader system, storage, account, or hardware issue | Titles tested and exact errors |
| Online features fail across titles | Check platform and publisher service status and connectivity | Service or network problem may be responsible | Status result, connection test, and time observed |
| Crash began after a driver, update, mod, or hardware change | Record the versions and perform a controlled test without the changed component | Compatibility or configuration change | Before-and-after versions and test result |
| Console title is on USB extended storage | Move it to internal storage for a controlled test | Storage path or device issue is possible | Storage location before and after the test |
The table describes diagnostic direction, not proof. A successful new game does not repair the old one, and a reinstall does not establish that a save was healthy.

Common mistakes that make recovery harder
- Deleting first: removes the comparison that tells support whether the save or installation is at fault.
- Letting synchronization overwrite evidence: a damaged local state may replace a usable cloud state, or vice versa.
- Changing many variables at once: updating drivers, reinstalling, moving storage, and deleting settings together prevents you from identifying the effective fix.
- Testing only the broken save: without a new-save comparison, you cannot isolate save corruption.
- Sending vague tickets: “It crashes” omits the steps, code, timing, and files required for diagnosis.
- Sharing sensitive data: support needs an account identifier, not a password or authentication code.
- Using another game’s recovery instructions: save formats, account ownership, cloud handling, and menu options differ.
When to escalate immediately
Contact the publisher or platform support after a repeatable failure survives the reversible checks, when a preserved save fails while a new save works, when multiple applications show storage or save errors, or when recovery instructions could erase data. Include the comparison and all attempted steps in the first ticket so the case does not restart at basic troubleshooting.
If a support agent requests a save, crash dump, DxDiag report, or video, use only the upload mechanism named in the official form. Keep the original local copy and document exactly which file was sent. If the form rejects a large attachment, ask for its approved alternative rather than using an unverified public file-sharing link.
Quick Recap
Practical decision path
- Stop and preserve the affected save and account state.
- Record the exact error, failure point, timing, and recent changes.
- Restart, update, check service status, verify files, and run a controlled test.
- Use a new save and another application to determine whether the fault follows the save, title, account, or device.
- Apply platform-specific recovery only after confirming its data risk.
- Reinstall or use database recovery only as a later, documented step.
- Escalate with a complete ticket and approved attachments when the fault remains or data may be at risk.
