If an AI-generated image carries another real person’s signature, don’t erase it to hide who made, endorsed, or originated the image. Ask the signer or rights-holder for permission and an authorized clean export. If you are authorized to correct the image, keep attribution truthful and preserve available provenance information.
A visible signature is not the same as a watermark or Content Credentials. Removing a mark from the pixels does not necessarily remove embedded provenance, and editing or uploading a file can affect whether that information survives.

Why removing someone else’s signature can mislead
A signature on an image may identify, or appear to identify, a creator or endorser. Removing it without permission can obscure attribution or make an image seem to have a different origin. If the signature is not yours, contact the signer or the image’s rights-holder before making a change.

Signature, watermark, and Content Credentials are different

OpenAI’s provenance help article explains that a detected supported watermark signal does not identify the image’s author or owner, show whether disclosure was required, or establish legal responsibility. Neither a visible mark nor a provenance check is, by itself, proof of ownership or authorship.
What to do instead
Request an authorized clean copy
Ask the signer or rights-holder for a version intended for your use. If they approve a change, get that permission in writing and clarify how the image may be shared and credited. This avoids silently changing another person’s attribution.

Correct the image only with permission
If you have authorization to make a correction, retain a record of it. Use an export workflow that preserves truthful credits and any available Content Credentials. Preservation depends on the editing and sharing workflow: Adobe documents C2PA preservation in supported enterprise workflows, while support from external platforms may vary. Adobe Experience League documentation on Content Credentials describes those workflow limits.

Use an appropriate credential inspection tool to check for available provenance information. A credential or detected signal can provide useful context, but it cannot by itself establish who owns the image or whether a particular person authorized its use. Likewise, finding no credential or watermark does not prove the image is non-AI or that you have the right to use it.

Keep attribution and disclosure accurate
If the goal is to clarify that an image was generated with AI, disclose that accurately rather than removing a signature in a way that changes the apparent origin. Preserve valid attribution and provenance where available. Adobe’s Content Authenticity information describes a tool for applying attribution and Content Credentials and inspecting credentials when available.
Adobe’s October 8, 2024 announcement reported that 91% of creators in an Adobe study wanted a reliable way to attach attribution to their work, and that 56% were worried about their content being used to train generative AI models without consent. Those are figures Adobe attributed to its study, not independently verified population estimates. The announcement also quotes Adobe executive Scott Belsky describing the company’s focus on creator recognition; these statements explain Adobe’s product rationale, not a legal standard.
