Seeing your public IP address online does not, by itself, mean someone has hacked your device or account. First distinguish ordinary visibility from concrete signs of misuse, then secure your router and devices. Escalate if you find unauthorized settings, malware symptoms, account alerts, threats, or suspicious financial activity.
What does it mean if your IP address is exposed?
A public IP address is the address websites and other internet services can see when your connection reaches them. A website, game, chat partner, or IP lookup service may therefore display it without having access to your device or accounts. An IP lookup result is not proof of your identity, identity theft, or a device breach.

The risk is different if a device or router has actually been compromised. In a March 12, 2026 public service announcement, the FBI warned that a compromised internet-connected device’s IP address can be used by threat actors to mask illegal online activity, making the consumer appear responsible. That describes misuse of compromised devices; it does not mean every visible IP address is part of a proxy network.

What should I check first?
Work out whether you have only seen your address displayed, or whether something happened that suggests unauthorized access. Look for specific signs rather than treating exposure itself as proof of compromise.

- Router settings you did not change, such as remote administration being enabled unexpectedly.
- Unfamiliar apps, persistent device problems, or other signs that malware may be present.
- Account security alerts, logins, or password changes you cannot explain.
- Repeated connection disruption, threats, or activity that suggests someone is misusing your connection.
- Unexpected financial activity or personal information being used without permission.
The FBI’s 911 S5 case illustrates why compromised devices matter, but its scale should not be confused with the risk from ordinary IP visibility. The FBI, Defense Criminal Investigative Service, and U.S. Department of Commerce reported more than 19 million compromised IP addresses across more than 190 countries in connection with that specific residential proxy operation in 2024. Those figures are not an estimate of how often an exposed IP leads to harm.
How do I secure my router?
Start with the router because it connects household devices to the internet. Exact menu names vary by manufacturer and model, so use the router vendor’s instructions for your device.

- Check the manufacturer’s support information for your router model and install any available security or firmware updates.
- Open the router’s settings and turn off remote administration if it is enabled and you do not need it.
- Change the router administrator password to a strong password that you do not reuse elsewhere.
- Review settings for changes you did not make, then reboot the router if the manufacturer recommends it after configuration changes.
The FBI’s residential proxy guidance identifies overheating, connectivity problems, and unknown setting changes as possible signs of router infection. These symptoms are not proof on their own, but unexplained changes warrant investigation. If your router is end-of-life and no longer receives security patches, replace it with a currently supported model if possible. IP exposure alone is not a reason to buy a new router.

If you suspect a device is infected, avoid entering passwords or financial information on it while you investigate. The FTC notes that security tools may not detect malware immediately, so a clean scan is not an absolute guarantee.

- Stop using the suspected device for sensitive logins or payments.
- Update its security software and run a scan.
- When the device is considered clean—or from a different device you trust—change passwords that may have been exposed and enable two-factor authentication where available.
- If you believe the compromise is serious, contact the device manufacturer or a technical support provider you already trust.

What if an account or financial information is affected?
Contact the account provider promptly using a contact method you know is official. Reset credentials that may have been exposed, switch to unique passwords, and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). Monitor financial accounts for transactions you do not recognize. If a financial account is actively being misused, contact the financial institution without delay. Never give your password or a one-time passcode to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

Should I change my IP address or use a VPN?
Do not treat an IP change or a VPN as a universal fix. The evidence here does not establish either as a remedy for every concern, and neither addresses malware on a device, an insecure router, or a taken-over account. Match the response to what you found: secure the router, investigate suspected malware, or contact the affected account or financial provider. If your concern is only that a service displayed your public address, that visibility alone does not establish a breach.
When should I report suspected misuse?
If you suspect that your device or personal information is being used in residential proxy activity, document what you can and submit a complaint to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Include available details such as the date, time, location, type of activity, affected people, and equipment. Contact affected account providers as well; the FBI PSA recommends reporting suspected proxy abuse and notifying providers. For active financial misuse, contact your bank or other financial institution directly.

If you need to replace an unsupported router
Check your current model’s security-update support before shopping. The cited guidance does not rank consumer routers, so compare options using practical requirements for your home rather than assuming a particular model is safest.
