Grade a vintage video game in three separate parts: authenticity (is the game and its seal genuine?), completeness (are the original components present?), and condition (how well have those components survived?). A sealed copy is not automatically mint, a high numeric score does not prove a factory seal, and a complete opened copy can be more desirable than a damaged or questionable “sealed” one.
Before cleaning, shipping or encapsulating anything, photograph every face of the package and record its contents and defects. For a valuable or uncertain item, a professional service can authenticate, grade and encapsulate it, but CGC and VGA use different labels and scales that are not directly interchangeable. For long-term preservation, prioritize low light, stable temperature and humidity, physical support, clean handling and enclosures that do not press against the package.

What a vintage game grade actually measures
Collectors often use “grade” as if it were a single judgment. In practice, you need three records for every game.
Authenticity
Authenticity asks whether the cartridge or disc, box, manual, inserts, accessories and seal (if present) are genuine for the stated platform, publisher, region and edition. A genuine box can contain a reproduction manual. An authentic cartridge can be paired with a replacement box. A plastic wrap that looks old can still be a later reseal.

Completeness
Completeness is an inventory, not a visual impression. Note whether the original cartridge or disc, manual, registration card, posters, maps, trays, catalogs, cables and other release-specific accessories are present. “Complete in box” (CIB) should mean complete for that particular release, not merely “box plus game.” If an item was sold without a factory seal, record that fact rather than treating an opened package as defective.
Condition
Condition describes physical wear independently of rarity or demand. Record structural damage such as crushed corners, seam splits, tears, dents, creases and detached flaps. Record surface damage such as scuffs, scratches, sticker residue, writing, stains and abrasions. Also note sun fading, yellowing, mold, odor, tape, glue, replacement parts and any restoration. Rarity and provenance may affect a sale price, but they do not upgrade a physical grade.
Create a condition record before touching the item
Use one worksheet and one image set per game. This prevents a replacement insert or a new crease from being mistaken for an original feature later.
- Identify the release. Write the platform, publisher, title, region, edition, catalog or product code and, where relevant, language and distribution variant.
- Describe the package. Identify the construction: cardboard sleeve, cardboard big-box PC package, plastic case, clamshell or another format. Record the box dimensions only if they help identify a variant or select a holder.
- Record seal status. Use precise language such as factory sealed, opened, resealed, seal uncertain or not normally factory sealed. Describe what you can observe rather than inferring a grade from the word “sealed.”
- Inventory components. List the cartridge or disc, manual, inserts, registration card, posters, maps, trays and accessories individually. Mark each as present, absent, replaced or uncertain, then describe its condition.
- Photograph in neutral light. Capture the front, back, spine, top, bottom and all corners. Add close-ups of the seal, seams, bar codes, product codes, stickers, writing, tears and any suspected repair. Keep the camera square to the panel when possible and retain the original files.
- Log interventions. Before using tape, adhesive, cleaning fluid or a replacement part, write down what was done, by whom and when. If the box was previously opened or restored, preserve that history instead of presenting the item as untouched.
Photographs should show the defect at a scale another person can assess. A single angled hero photograph can hide a crushed corner or a split seam; a complete record cannot.
Inspect the box systematically
Structure first
Start with the folds, corners, flap hinges, glued seams and tray supports. A corner that has lost its shape, a split seam or a softened flap can affect stability even when the printed surface looks bright. Check whether the cardboard is bowed, delaminating or compressed. Do not pull a box from a tightly packed row by its top flap; support the base and sides instead.

Surface and print
Under diffuse light, look for abrasion, gloss changes, scratches, sticker residue, price stickers, writing, stains and fingerprints. Compare color across the front, spine and back: uneven exposure can reveal sun fading even when the overall image remains attractive. Yellowing may result from age or materials, while a sharp color boundary can indicate prolonged display behind glass or near a window.
Edges, folds and hidden faces
Many defects are on the bottom panel, inside flaps or behind a spine. Open an unsealed box only as far as its structure allows. Photograph folds and tabs before flattening anything. Never force a brittle hinge to obtain a better photograph; a new tear is permanent damage.

Odor, mold and active deterioration
A musty odor, visible spotting or powdering paper indicates a preservation problem, not merely a cosmetic defect. Isolate a suspect item in a clean, ventilated area away from the collection until its condition is assessed. Do not brush moldy material beside other games or seal active deterioration in a holder.
How to assess a factory seal and detect a reseal
Seal authentication is release-specific. Plastic type, seam placement and folding methods vary by console and publisher, so a generic “shrink-wrap test” is unreliable. Use trusted examples of the same title, region and edition for comparison.
Examine the plastic
- Identify the film’s texture, clarity, thickness and tension. Aged plastic can be cloudy or brittle, but an unusual material is a reason to investigate, not automatic proof of a reseal.
- Trace every seam. Note whether seams run where that release normally places them, whether the overlap is consistent and whether folds are crisp, loose or irregular.
- Look for perforations, tear strips, corner folds and heat patterns. Compare their spacing and shape with known examples from the same release.
- Inspect for reopening evidence: lifted or reattached film, fresh-looking heat damage, adhesive residue, cuts hidden under folds, mismatched tension or a seam that stops abruptly.
- Check the relationship between wrap and box. A seal that is tight on one panel but slack around a crushed corner may reflect later wrapping, although manufacturing variation also exists.
Opened games can be resealed in authentic-looking or non-authentic plastic. Therefore, document observations and the comparison source instead of declaring a seal genuine from appearance alone. A professional authenticator should be told about any known opening, cleaning or repair.

Keep “sealed” separate from “mint”
A genuine factory seal does not protect a box from crushed corners, fading, tears, scuffs, price stickers, manufacturing defects or poor storage. Write the seal assessment and the physical condition as separate fields. Conversely, an opened game may have a complete, strong box and clean components.

Use the release’s original packing list, catalog photographs or other trusted examples to establish what belongs in the package. Do not assume that every regional edition included the same insert or accessory.
Core components
- Original cartridge or disc, including the correct label, disc art and revision where applicable.
- Manual or instruction book, with its original language and edition.
- Box, tray or molded insert designed for that release.
- Registration card, warranty card, catalog, poster, map, sticker sheet or other printed matter included at launch.
- Release-specific accessories such as adapters, cables, overlays or protective cases.
Record missing and replaced pieces explicitly. A reproduction manual should not be counted as an original manual simply because it fits. If the package is complete but not factory sealed, describe it as complete and opened rather than downgrading completeness because of seal status.
Professional grading: CGC and VGA frameworks
Professional services generally combine authentication, condition grading and a protective holder. Their labels are provider-specific; a number from one company is not a universal conversion to another company’s number.

That statement describes CGC’s scale, not a promise that every provider’s 10 means the same thing. Before submitting, read the current rules for declared value, eligible formats, cleaning, insurance, shipping and holder size.

When submission makes sense
- Authenticity or a reseal is difficult to judge and the item is valuable enough to justify professional fees and shipping.
- You want a standardized condition record for insurance, estate planning or a sale.
- Tamper-resistant encapsulation and display are part of your collecting goal.
When grading may not be worthwhile
- The game is common and low value compared with service, shipping and insurance costs.
- The box is heavily damaged, actively deteriorating or missing most components.
- You want to open the package regularly to play or inspect it.
Prepare a submission package
- Photograph the item and retain the condition worksheet.
- Verify that the title, region, edition and declared value meet the provider’s current eligibility rules.
- Disclose resealing, cleaning, tape, glue, restoration and replacement parts.
- Use a correctly sized inner bag and rigid protection that cannot crush the box. Do not force the game into a tight holder or add loose material that can rub printed surfaces.
- Follow the provider’s packing, insurance and shipping instructions, and record the package condition before dispatch.
Preserve boxes and manuals at home
Paperboard, inks, plastics and adhesives age at different rates. The safest strategy is a stable environment with minimal light, moisture and mechanical stress rather than a single “magic” temperature or humidity number.
Control light
Keep games away from direct sunlight and strong display lighting. Ultraviolet exposure accelerates fading and can embrittle some plastics. Rotate displayed items and use UV-filtering glazing when a display must remain lit. Do not place a box where a window beam moves across it during the day.
Control moisture and temperature
Avoid damp basements, hot attics, condensation and rapid temperature changes. Moisture encourages mold and can soften board, while heat can distort plastic and accelerate adhesive failure. Use a stable interior room and monitor conditions if the collection is valuable. Do not transfer lifespan figures from other media to cardboard: the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration stated in 2016 that “Magnetic tapes stored under archival conditions … generally have a lifespan of about 10 to 50 years before exhibiting difficult to handle decay.” That estimate concerns magnetic tape, not game boxes or manuals.
Use safe enclosures
Choose inert, correctly sized bags, boxes or cases that support the package without pressing on printed surfaces. Keep plastics from contacting ink when the enclosure material is not known to be safe. Leave enough clearance for a box to slide out without scraping corners, but avoid a loose container in which it can move during handling.

Store a sound, rigid box upright only when its sides and base can support that orientation. Store a weak, bowed or partially collapsed package flat with full, even support. Never stack heavy items on top of a vintage box, and do not use the box itself as a shelf support.
Handling, cleaning and restoration
Handle deliberately
- Wash and dry hands before handling clean paper and use clean nitrile gloves when they improve grip or prevent transfer of oils; gloves are not a substitute for control, especially around small parts.
- Support corners and the bottom panel with both hands.
- Keep food, drinks, adhesives and loose metal objects away from the work area.
- Move one item at a time and avoid vibration or impact.
Do not clean blindly
Dry dust can sometimes be removed with a very soft brush or gentle air movement, but rubbing can burnish ink and spread grime. Water, solvent, household cleaner and adhesive remover can dissolve coatings, lift ink or leave a tide mark. Test any method only on a hidden, non-critical area after documenting the original state, and recognize that a cleaning or restoration event must be disclosed to a grader.
Separate repair from preservation
Tape, glue, replacement cardboard and pressed corners may improve stability while reducing originality or grade. Decide whether your priority is safe storage, display appearance or an untouched condition record. Record every intervention, retain removed parts and never represent a restored box as unrestored.
Display and shipping without adding damage
CGC’s guarantee language identifies extreme temperature, moisture, damaging environmental conditions, excessive light, motion, impact and vibration as risks to collectibles or their holders. Treat that list as a practical checklist.
- Wrap the encapsulated or boxed game so it cannot slide inside the package.
- Use rigid outer protection with cushioning on every side, leaving no point where a corner can contact the carton directly.
- Prevent pressure on flaps and seams; do not strap or compress a box tightly.
- Keep the shipment away from heat, water and prolonged sunlight, and use the carrier and insurance level required by the item’s value.
- Photograph the packed item and the sealed carton before handing it over.
For display, support the base rather than hanging weight from a flap, keep the case out of a sunbeam and inspect periodically for condensation, fading, insects or new distortion.
A practical grading workflow
- Identify the exact release. Confirm platform, publisher, region, edition and product code.
- Separate the three judgments. Write independent notes for authenticity, completeness and condition.
- Document before intervention. Photograph all faces, components, seals and defects in neutral light.
- Inspect structure and surfaces. Work from corners and seams to print, stickers, fading, odor and hidden panels.
- Authenticate the seal cautiously. Compare film, seams, folds, perforations and tension with trusted examples of the same release.
- Inventory CIB contents. Mark each original, missing, replaced or uncertain component.
- Choose preservation before presentation. Isolate mold, stabilize storage and select a non-crushing enclosure.
- Decide on professional grading. Submit when authentication, standardized documentation or encapsulation justifies the current fee, shipping and risk.
- Keep the record with the game. Preserve photographs, receipts, service reports and restoration notes so a future owner can distinguish original condition from later work.
How to describe the result honestly
A useful description might read: “North American cardboard-box release, opened; cartridge and manual present, registration card absent; box has a crushed lower-right corner, 35 mm seam split, price-sticker residue and moderate spine fading; no mold odor; previous clear tape removed.” That wording tells a buyer or grader what is present and what is damaged without hiding uncertainty behind a single number.
The most defensible vintage-game assessment is therefore a documented combination of release identification, component inventory, seal analysis and condition notes. Professional encapsulation can make that record easier to preserve and compare, but it cannot turn a questionable reseal into a verified factory seal or make a damaged box mint.
