Give a coding agent only the file, command, network, and credential access needed for its current task. Enforce those limits with sandboxing, scoped credentials, network policy, and approval gates—not with a permission label or the agent’s own judgment. Keep routine work inside a bounded environment, require review when an action crosses a meaningful boundary, and remove temporary privileges when the task ends.
Why task-based permissions are safer than role-based access alone
A role can establish a baseline—for example, what a developer’s agent may normally read—but it does not explain what a particular task needs. A code review, dependency update, and production deployment have different consequences and should not inherit the same authority just because they belong to the same job title.

For each task, define the working files, executable tools, reachable network destinations, and permitted outputs. Add a capability only when the task requires it, and make any elevation temporary. Anthropic’s zero-trust guidance describes static least-privilege roles as a foundation and dynamic, task-based privilege adjustment as an enterprise capability; this is vendor guidance, not independent validation. Do not assume a model can reliably infer the right boundary. The 2026 AuthBench preprint reports that evaluated models both omitted needed permissions and granted unused or sensitive access. More inference-time reasoning did not eliminate the mismatch. Its results concern the models and benchmark studied, not every current agent. AuthBench preprint

What a real sandbox must control
A sandbox is an enforceable execution boundary, not a permission setting displayed in an interface. Specify which paths the agent can read and write, which processes it can run, and which network destinations it can reach. Keep the approval policy separate: it determines when an action outside the sandbox or with consequential effects needs review. OpenAI describes the two controls as complementary: “Approvals and sandboxing work together.”
Filesystem and network controls need to work together. Filesystem isolation limits what sensitive data the agent can access; network isolation can restrict where accessible data can be sent. Anthropic says both are necessary for effective sandboxing in its discussion of Claude Code’s bash tool. The details described apply to that product and its deployment, not all coding agents. Anthropic’s sandboxing explanation
Bound the filesystem
Prefer a task working directory or repository boundary over inheriting the user’s full home-directory access. If the task needs to inspect files outside its write area, consider read access without write access. Explicitly account for configuration files, credentials, temporary directories, and generated outputs; a narrow-looking write permission can still be broad if it includes parent directories or executable startup files.

Restrict commands and network access
Allow only the processes and tools the task needs. For outbound network traffic, use a deny-by-default policy or a destination allowlist where practical, and decide how requests to new destinations are handled. A command allowlist is not enough if an allowed process can invoke a shell, download code, or transmit files over an unrestricted network.
OpenAI’s deployment guidance describes configurable workspace write roots, sandbox modes, managed network destinations, and telemetry. Its Agents API security documentation warns that generated code can use files, credentials, and network resources available to its environment. These are descriptions of OpenAI’s own systems and guidance, not guarantees for every plan or deployment. OpenAI deployment guidance · OpenAI Agents API security documentation
Keep credentials outside generated code
Code an agent generates may read any secrets placed in its environment. Avoid putting long-lived application keys in source files, logs, or a general-purpose agent environment. Keep durable credentials in a secrets manager or host application, and where third-party access is necessary, prefer a broker or proxy that provides narrowly scoped credentials only for approved destinations.

OpenAI’s Agents API guidance distinguishes executor MCP connections from remote MCP connections and describes environment keys and secret brokering. It recommends isolated compute and approved outbound endpoints. The right arrangement depends on where the agent runs and which service it needs to reach; do not treat a credential mechanism as safe unless you know whether agent-generated code can read the credential itself. A practical permission design for each task
- Start with a restricted baseline. Use read-only access or deny-by-default settings where they fit the task.
- Write down the task boundary. Specify the repository or working directory, allowed write paths, executable tools, network destinations, and outputs the agent may produce.
- Add only required capabilities. If the task needs elevated access, scope it to that task and set it to expire when the task is complete.
- Keep durable secrets out of reach. Store credentials in a secrets manager or application layer; broker narrowly scoped access when the agent needs a service.
- Gate consequential boundary crossings. Require approval for actions outside the sandbox or external writes that could alter shared or production state. Use validated safe-output handling only when the deployment provides it.
- Record enough context to reconstruct decisions. Log the task request, tool activity, applicable policy, approvals, and result, including who authorized any elevation.
- Review the harness as security-sensitive code. Pin dependencies and inspect tool declarations, hooks, skills, and MCP configuration for unexpected or broad permissions.
This is a design pattern, not a claim that one vendor implements every step. OpenAI, Anthropic, and GitHub document different controls for their own products, and feature names alone do not establish equivalent enforcement. Check the product, version, operating system, and deployment model in use.
When should an agent act automatically, and when should it ask?
Let ordinary actions proceed inside the defined boundary so the agent does not need a person to approve every command. Ask for review when the next action requires access beyond that boundary or could create a consequential external change. The approval should identify the specific action and scope; where possible, authorize one action or a bounded session rather than granting open-ended authority.

GitHub’s Agentic Workflows documentation says workflows have read-only repository permissions by default unless more are explicitly granted. It also describes firewalled containers, safe outputs declared in workflow frontmatter, isolated handling of sensitive credentials, and threat detection before write actions. These are controls documented for Agentic Workflows, not for every GitHub Copilot interaction. GitHub’s Agentic Workflows documentation
Approval prompts can be useful when they protect a real boundary, but excessive prompts can encourage indiscriminate approval. Anthropic reports that Claude Code sandboxing reduced permission prompts by 84% in the company’s internal usage. That is a vendor-reported internal observation, not an independent benchmark or a result that should be expected for other users or agents. Anthropic’s sandboxing explanation
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAudit the agent harness, not just the model
The model is only one part of the security boundary. Shared skills, hooks, MCP servers, and other harness components can change which tools run or what permissions are granted. Treat their configuration and updates like code that can affect security: review changes, pin versions where possible, and reject broad grants disguised as narrow command prefixes.

A 2026 study, “Scanning the Harness,” examined 3,171 public GitHub repositories: 2,660 setups assembling at least two component types and 511 published skill collections. Under its defined rules, it found a security defect in 16.0% of studied setups. Those figures describe that sampled public corpus and its validated defect classes; they are not estimates for all coding-agent deployments. “Scanning the Harness” study
Questions to ask when evaluating a deployment
- Filesystem: Can the agent read broadly but write only to task-specific paths, or does it inherit the user’s access?
- Network: Is outbound traffic denied, allowlisted, or broadly open? What happens when the task needs a new destination?
- Credentials: Can generated code read secrets directly, or does a host or proxy broker scoped access?
- Approvals: Which actions run inside the sandbox, which require review, and can approval be limited to one action or session?
- Duration: Can privilege be elevated for one task and returned to baseline automatically?
- Policy and audit: Can administrators enforce rules users cannot override? Do logs capture the action, context, decision, and authorizing identity?
Compare deployments against the same task and verify the actual behavior of the operating system, product version, and configuration you plan to use. A label such as “sandboxed” or “least privilege” does not answer these questions by itself.
