To reset an HP laptop, choose the recovery route that matches your goal: use Windows Reset this PC to reinstall the currently installed Windows version, or use HP Cloud Recovery to restore HP’s original operating system and drivers on a supported model. If Windows will not start, open Windows Recovery Environment with F11 and choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC. Back up important files first: some reset choices erase them, and HP says factory system recovery removes all data on the hard drive.
Choose the reset that matches what you mean by “completely”
“Reset” can mean reinstalling Windows, restoring HP’s original factory software, or removing personal data. These are not interchangeable outcomes.

Before you reset: protect files and keep the laptop powered
- Back up files you need. Save important documents and other files to external storage before choosing an option that removes data. Do not assume “reset” means your files will be retained.
- Read each confirmation screen. Windows Reset and HP recovery present different choices; confirm the stated file outcome before proceeding.
- Keep the laptop connected to power. Let recovery and setup complete without shutting down or interrupting the process; HP identifies interruption before recovery and setup finish as a common cause of recovery problems. HP Support
Reset an HP laptop when Windows starts
- In Windows, search for Recovery options and open the Recovery screen.
- Under Reset this PC, select Reset PC.
- Follow the prompts and choose whether to keep personal files or remove everything. Check the confirmation screens carefully before starting. HP Support
The available choice determines what happens to user data. Selecting a file-removal option is not the same as preserving files for a later setup.

Reset when Windows will not start normally
- Restart the laptop and repeatedly press F11 as it starts to open Windows Recovery Environment.
- On Choose an option, select Troubleshoot, then Reset this PC.
- Follow the prompts, review the data-removal choice, and allow recovery and setup to finish. HP Support
If you can reach the Windows sign-in screen or Start menu, HP also describes opening recovery by holding Shift while choosing Restart. Availability depends on being able to use that Windows route. HP Support

Restore HP’s original factory software with Cloud Recovery
Choose HP Cloud Recovery when you specifically want HP’s original operating system and drivers, rather than a reinstall of the Windows version currently on the laptop. HP says Cloud Recovery is available for HP PCs manufactured in 2016 and later, but that does not mean every model from those years is supported. Verify eligibility for the exact laptop before proceeding. HP says the recovery software can be downloaded to a USB flash drive; media requirements may vary by model, so use the current model-specific instructions rather than assuming a drive capacity. HP’s factory-settings overview states: “HP System Recovery removes all hard drive data and reinstalls the original operating system.” Its recovery USB guidance also warns that Remove everything deletes personal files, accounts, settings, and apps that did not come with the computer. What to check if the recovery route is unavailable
- If Windows starts, use its Recovery options and Reset this PC route.
- If Windows does not start, try F11 during restart to reach Windows Recovery Environment.
- If you need HP’s original software, confirm Cloud Recovery support for your precise model; HP’s general eligibility statement is not a guarantee for every laptop made from 2016 onward.
- For Cloud Recovery USB creation, follow HP’s current instructions for that model, including its media requirements.
HP’s general instructions do not guarantee identical screens or support on every HP model and Windows configuration. Check the current HP guidance for your laptop if the options or labels differ.
