AI agents work reliably when context is treated as an operating system around the model, not as a longer prompt. Give each agent durable but isolated state, a small and well-described set of tools, a verifiable identity with narrowly scoped permissions, a runtime that matches its lifecycle, and observability that connects decisions to real-world effects. This design lets an agent continue work for hours without inheriting another task’s data, select the right capability without drowning in tool definitions, and gives operators a way to stop, investigate, and improve it.
No single platform is proven to be the universal answer. Choose an architecture by comparing persistence, isolation, interoperability, governance, operating burden, and observability for your workload.

What “infrastructure context” means for an agent
A model’s prompt contains only the information placed in its current request. An agent, by contrast, may need to read a ticket, query a database, call an API, write a file, run code, wait for an approval, and resume later. Infrastructure context is the durable system that makes those actions possible and safe.
That system answers practical questions the prompt cannot answer on its own:

- Where does working state live when a process restarts?
- Which files, records, tools, and credentials belong to this task?
- How does the agent discover a capability and understand its inputs and outputs?
- Which identity is accountable for each action?
- What prevents untrusted code or data from crossing a tenant or agent boundary?
- Can an operator reconstruct what happened from metrics, logs, traces, evaluations, and audit records?
A useful mental model is to separate context into four layers:
| Layer | Purpose | Typical contents | Design question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Session state | Keep the current task coherent | Recent messages, pending tool calls, intermediate results | What must survive a tool call or short interruption? |
| Longer-lived memory | Retain facts or preferences across tasks | Approved user preferences, task history, durable artifacts | Who may read, modify, or delete each item? |
| Retrievable knowledge | Supply current, relevant information on demand | Documents, records, policies, indexes, metadata | How are freshness, provenance, and access filters enforced? |
| Operational context | Enable and constrain actions | Identity, permissions, tool schemas, runtime limits, telemetry | Can every action be authorized and explained? |
These layers should not be collapsed into one giant transcript. Keeping them distinct makes retention, access control, deletion, and troubleshooting tractable.
Build continuity without sacrificing isolation
Persist the state that has business value
A long-running agent needs a durable place for checkpoints, task status, approved decisions, and generated artifacts. AWS guidance describes agents that run autonomously for hours and identifies runtime, memory, and identity capabilities as supporting infrastructure. Persisting state lets an agent resume after a process restart instead of repeating actions or losing a partially completed workflow.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Persist only what the next step actually needs. A session transcript, a durable business record, and a search index have different retention periods and access rules. Store each in a system suited to its purpose, attach an owner and sensitivity label, and record a version or timestamp so the agent can distinguish current information from stale information.
Make isolation a first-class boundary
Continuity becomes dangerous when every agent can see the same memory or scratch directory. Kubernetes’ Agent Sandbox article describes agents as stateful singleton workloads with a persistent identity and secure scratch space. Apply that principle even when you use a different runtime: bind state and temporary files to an agent, tenant, or workflow identity, and make cross-boundary access an explicit, authorized operation.
- Give each run a separate workspace or namespace.
- Use separate credentials for separate agents and environments.
- Encrypt stored state and protect encryption keys with an independent access policy.
- Define deletion and expiration rules for transcripts, files, embeddings, and caches.
- Prevent one run from reading another run’s environment variables, sockets, or temporary files.
Isolation is not only a storage concern. Network egress, process privileges, mounted volumes, and cached tool results can all leak context.

Expose only useful tools and knowledge
Inventory before you integrate
Start with a map of the data and actions required for the task. For each source, record its owner, sensitivity, freshness requirement, failure behavior, and permitted consumers. This inventory prevents a common mistake: giving an agent a broad catalog because discovery feels convenient.
Fight tool bloat with precise schemas
Google Cloud warns that excessive tool definitions can dilute an agent’s attention, reduce accuracy, and increase cost and latency. Present a focused set of capabilities for the current role. A tool description should state what it does, when to use it, required parameters, allowed values, side effects, authentication expectations, and the shape and meaning of its return value. State what the tool does not do, too; that reduces speculative calls.
Prefer separate read and write operations, and make irreversible actions visibly different from previews or dry runs. Return structured errors with a retry recommendation rather than an opaque failure message. Include resource identifiers and timestamps in results so the agent can detect that a record changed while it was thinking.
Keep retrieval selective and attributable
Retrieve the smallest set of documents or records that can answer the current step. Attach source, owner, version, and last-updated metadata to retrieved content. If two sources conflict, give the agent a policy for escalation instead of asking it to guess. Treat retrieved text as data, not as trusted instructions; a document can contain an indirect prompt injection that attempts to redirect the agent.
Use an interface for tools, then govern the endpoints
Where MCP fits
Google Cloud describes the Model Context Protocol (MCP) as a standardized interface for agent access to tools and data. An interface such as MCP can keep the agent’s reasoning logic separate from individual tool implementations and make capabilities easier to add or replace. It does not, by itself, decide who may call a tool or how an endpoint is operated.
What API management adds
API management complements a communication protocol. It handles endpoint lifecycle, authentication, authorization, rate limits, quotas, versioning, deprecation, and monitoring. Put policy at this boundary so a tool cannot be reached merely because its schema was supplied to the model. Enforce limits in the service, not only in instructions the model may ignore.

| Control | What to enforce | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication | Verify the calling agent and the workload that hosts it | Short-lived credential, audience, issuance time |
| Authorization | Allow specific operations on specific resources | Policy decision, resource scope, approver where required |
| Rate and spend limits | Bound calls, concurrency, tokens, and financial impact | Quota counters and rejected-call reason |
| Lifecycle | Version, deprecate, and revoke tools predictably | Schema version and change history |
| Monitoring | Detect failures, unusual volume, and policy violations | Correlated request and tool identifiers |
Bind every action to identity and policy
Identity should belong at the infrastructure boundary, not be inferred from a model’s text. Kubernetes Agentic Networking lists unique agent identity, granular authorization, and auditable traffic among its project goals. Give each agent or workload a distinct principal, then authorize that principal for named tools and operations.
Google Cloud’s security guidance highlights the risk of indirect prompt injection and tool poisoning. Doug Ko, a senior product marketing manager for security at Google Cloud, summarized the concern this way: “Agents are the ultimate insiders. We grant them permission to read emails, query databases, and trigger API calls.” Treat an agent as powerful automation, not as a trusted employee.
Use least privilege at action granularity
- Separate read, create, update, delete, deploy, and payment permissions.
- Limit access to the minimum tenant, project, repository, table, or time window required.
- Use short-lived credentials and rotate or revoke them without rebuilding the agent.
- Require a human approval for high-impact actions such as production changes, external messages, money movement, or permanent deletion.
- Log the policy decision, not just the eventual API response.
Assume inputs can be adversarial
Emails, web pages, issue descriptions, documents, and tool results may contain instructions aimed at the agent. Mark untrusted content in the data model, keep it separate from system policy, and constrain what a tool result is allowed to trigger. A retrieved sentence should never be able to grant a permission, change a destination, or disable an approval gate.

Choose a runtime that matches the agent’s lifecycle
The right execution environment depends on duration, state, isolation, resource demand, and the team’s operational skills. The following comparison is a decision aid, not a performance ranking.
| Runtime pattern | Best fit | Strengths | Trade-offs to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed agent runtime | Teams wanting provider-operated scaling and integrated identity or memory services | Less infrastructure maintenance; standard operational integrations may be available | Provider coupling, regional availability, quotas, data-location controls, and portability |
| Serverless functions | Short, stateless steps with clear time limits | Simple deployment and automatic scaling | Execution ceilings, cold starts, limited local state, and awkwardness for long-running workflows |
| Containers | Services needing custom dependencies and predictable process behavior | Packaging control, flexible runtimes, and straightforward separation of workers | You must operate scheduling, patching, scaling, identity, and sandboxing |
| Sandboxed Kubernetes workloads | Long-lived, stateful agents requiring strong workload isolation and cluster integration | Explicit lifecycle, networking, storage, and policy controls | Higher platform complexity; verify the maturity and support status of the chosen sandbox features |
The Kubernetes Agent Sandbox article dated March 20, 2026 says the project is in development. Its API and lifecycle features are therefore an emerging option, not a blanket production guarantee. Likewise, Kubernetes Agentic Networking pages describe project goals; check current releases, supported APIs, and security properties before committing to them.
Instrument the complete path from thought to effect
A CPU and memory dashboard cannot explain why an agent chose the wrong customer record. Kubernetes defines observability as collecting and analyzing metrics, logs, and traces—the “three pillars of observability”—to understand cluster health and performance. For agents, add tool activity, policy decisions, state transitions, and evaluation results to that picture.

Metrics
- Task completion, timeout, retry, and escalation rates.
- Tool-call latency, error classes, throttling, and rejection counts.
- Token usage, queue time, concurrency, and cost by workflow or tenant.
- State-store read/write latency, cache hit rate, and checkpoint failures.
- Sandbox resource use, restarts, network-denied events, and egress volume.
Logs
Log structured events rather than entire sensitive prompts by default. Include a run identifier, agent identity, tool name and version, resource scope, policy result, timestamp, and outcome. Redact secrets and apply retention rules that match the underlying data.

Propagate a trace or correlation identifier from the user request through model calls, retrieval, tool gateways, queues, databases, and external APIs. A trace should show where time was spent and which call produced the side effect. Preserve enough input and output metadata to diagnose the decision without creating a second uncontrolled copy of sensitive content.
Evaluation and regression detection
A technically healthy run can still produce a bad answer. AWS guidance includes agent evaluation, regression detection, and monitoring in the operational picture. Maintain representative test tasks, score tool selection and policy adherence, and compare results after changing a prompt, model, tool schema, retrieval index, or permission. Keep failed examples for review and add them to the regression set when appropriate.

- Define the task boundary. Write the agent’s objective, allowed side effects, completion conditions, escalation paths, and data classifications. Identify which actions are reversible.
- Inventory sources and tools. List owners, freshness, sensitivity, schemas, failure modes, and expected call volume. Remove capabilities that are not needed for the first workflow.
- Choose state locations. Decide what remains in session history, what becomes durable memory, and what is retrieved from a source of record. Set retention, deletion, and versioning rules before storing production data.
- Design isolation. Assign a workspace, namespace, network policy, credential set, and resource quota to each agent, tenant, or run. Test that a run cannot read another run’s files or state.
- Expose controlled interfaces. Use MCP when a standardized tool and data interface improves interoperability. Put authentication, authorization, rate limits, lifecycle controls, and monitoring in an API gateway or equivalent service.
- Bind identity and approvals. Create a unique workload identity, map it to narrowly scoped operations, and insert human approval for high-impact actions. Record every policy decision.
- Instrument before scaling. Add correlated metrics, logs, traces, tool events, audit records, and evaluation scores. Verify that a failed run can be reconstructed without relying on an unrepeatable model response.
- Run adversarial and failure tests. Try prompt injection in retrieved documents, poisoned tool descriptions, expired credentials, duplicate requests, partial outages, stale records, quota exhaustion, and a restarted worker. Confirm safe retry and recovery behavior.
- Expand gradually. Start with read-only or reversible actions, a limited tenant set, and explicit approval. Promote capabilities only after evaluation results and audit evidence meet your service targets.
How to decide between architecture patterns
Score each candidate against the same questions rather than choosing by product familiarity:
| Axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| State and persistence | Does context survive tool calls, process restarts, and separate sessions? What is retained, for how long, and who can read it? |
| Isolation | Are agents, tenants, scratch files, credentials, and network paths separated? How is untrusted code contained? |
| Tool interoperability | Does the design use MCP or another stable interface? Can a tool change without coupling the agent’s reasoning code to its implementation? |
| Identity and permissions | Is each agent uniquely identified? Can access be scoped to individual actions, audited, revoked, and approved? |
| Observability | Can operators correlate infrastructure signals with model calls, retrieval, tool activity, evaluations, and audit records? |
| Operating model | Does the team have the skills and on-call capacity for managed services, serverless execution, containers, or self-managed Kubernetes? |
Prefer the simplest pattern that satisfies the task’s isolation and lifecycle requirements. A short, read-only workflow may not justify a stateful cluster. A coding agent that runs for hours, handles untrusted repositories, and must resume after interruption may need durable identity, a dedicated sandbox, persistent storage, and stronger network policy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat current evidence says—and what it does not
Google Cloud reported in August 2026 that 79% of tech leaders named security, governance, or operations their most significant challenge to scaling inference; 35% of senior IT decision makers cited insufficient security for multi-system access as a primary barrier to agentic deployment; 69% of surveyed executives rated a full-stack platform a critical requirement; and 80% said data compliance was the primary factor dictating that platform choice. These are vendor-published figures, and the reviewed page does not fully state the survey population or fieldwork dates, so they should not be treated as universal prevalence estimates.
Best Value
A separate 2026 preprint by Aristidis Vasilopoulos describes one research example: a 108,000-line C# distributed system built with 19 specialized agents, 34 on-demand specification documents, and 283 development sessions. It is an example of scale and process, not a general benchmark or proof that the same architecture will work for every team.
The available guidance establishes design principles, not a measured winner among runtimes. AWS, Google Cloud, and Kubernetes emphasize different platform strengths, so validate portability, regional controls, pricing, support, and operational effort against your own requirements.
