There is no documented trick that guarantees a page will rank in an AI answer or earn a citation. Improve your chances by making useful pages accessible to the relevant crawlers, keeping them eligible for ordinary search, and publishing clear, original content that fits the reader’s question. Then measure citations across the products and interfaces your audience uses: visibility is an uncertain outcome, not a promised result.
What “ranking in LLM SEO” actually means
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude do not share a published ranking formula. Their documentation describes different search and source-access behaviors, not a single set of ranking factors that publishers can optimize for. A page may be technically reachable but never selected; a high position in conventional search does not guarantee an AI citation.

Think about the work in three separate parts: whether a platform can access a page, whether it is discoverable through conventional search, and whether its content is a good source for the particular question. Improving one part does not guarantee the others.
| Area | What to check | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Crawler and access eligibility | Robots rules, CDN and firewall access, and the relevant provider’s current bot guidance | OpenAI and Perplexity publish site-owner guidance about crawler access. Eligibility is not a promise of citation. |
| Search eligibility | Crawlability, indexing, internal links, useful text, and eligibility for a normal Search snippet | Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. |
| Content and source fit | Whether the page directly answers the query with useful, trustworthy, well-organized information | Google recommends helpful, non-commodity content. An observational study found citation patterns varied by query intent and vertical. |
How do I get cited by ChatGPT?
Allow the documented search crawler
OpenAI’s Help Center guidance for ChatGPT Search says site owners should allow OAI-Searchbot and ensure the host or content delivery network permits traffic from OpenAI’s published searchbot IP addresses. Check both robots rules and any CDN, firewall, or web application firewall rules that could block requests. Use OpenAI’s current published guidance rather than relying on a copied IP list.
#1 Best Overall
This makes a site eligible for inclusion; it does not guarantee that a page will appear, rank, or be cited. OpenAI also cautions that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. When using a cited answer, open the source and check its contents, date, and authority rather than treating the citation as proof.
How do I get my website into Perplexity answers?
Distinguish crawling from user-requested access
Perplexity’s crawler documentation distinguishes PerplexityBot, used to surface and link websites in search results, from Perplexity-User, used when a user request triggers access to a page. The documentation says Perplexity-User is not used for web crawling or foundation-model training and generally ignores robots.txt because the access is user-requested.
If you want your pages considered for Perplexity search results, review the current official guidance for PerplexityBot, robots.txt, and published IP ranges. Do not assume that allowing Perplexity-User has the same purpose as allowing the search crawler. Perplexity says IP-range changes may take up to 24 hours to be reflected, so allow time when checking the effect of an access-rule change.

Yes. Anthropic’s API documentation describes Claude’s web-search tool as providing access to real-time web content beyond the model’s knowledge cutoff and returning citations for sources drawn from search results. Claude Help describes live-search responses as including direct citations and source links, and advises users to cross-check them.
That explains how citations can appear; it does not disclose a publisher ranking formula or promise that a particular site will be included. Make pages accessible and useful, but do not treat Claude’s citation behavior as a separate, fully documented optimization system.
Does Google SEO help you appear in AI answers?
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ordinary eligibility still matters
Google Search Central says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google does not require special schema markup or additional technical requirements for those features. Indexing and serving are not guaranteed.
Rank #3
Google’s guidance emphasizes familiar foundations: let Google crawl the page, make it discoverable through useful internal links, provide important information as text, maintain a good page experience, and use structured data that matches what readers can see. Google’s generative AI guidance also says not to create pages for every query variation mainly to manipulate AI visibility, and that Google Search ignores llms.txt and similar special AI files for ranking and visibility.

An April 2026 version 6 preprint by Anthony Lee, explicitly marked as not peer reviewed, examined citation behavior across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini. Its findings are observational and specific to its samples and platform states; they do not establish a causal recipe.
- In a reported replication involving 94,599 citation events across 1,998 queries and four AI platforms, the study reported a 54% citation rate for pages at Google position 1 and about 2% for pages at position 100. Those are study results, not the probability that a particular site will be cited.
- In a separate 120-query API sample, exact-URL overlap with Google’s literal-query Top 3 was 7.8% for ChatGPT and 29.7% for Perplexity. The paper reported much higher domain-level overlap in its separate consumer web UI study, so the API figures should not be generalized to consumer experiences.
- Across the study’s 19,556-query corpus spanning eight verticals, 61.3% of queries were labeled informational and 31.2% discovery. The source types cited varied by intent and vertical.
The study found Google rank was a strong predictor of citation status in its page-level model, but an AI system often cited a different page from the literal-query top result. Conventional search visibility may help a page enter a candidate set; it cannot ensure selection. The study also found differences by platform and between API and web UI access.

What content should you publish?
Answer the real task, not every wording variation
Start with what the reader is trying to do. An informational question, a product or service discovery query, a comparison, and a review may call for different evidence and source formats. The study’s intent findings are observational, but they reinforce a practical point: do not force every subject into one article template.
Make the answer easy to find and verify. Use specific headings, explain terms, show relevant evidence, and keep time-sensitive details current. Add original reporting or analysis when you have it; do not invent tests, credentials, statistics, or quotations. Google’s guidance favors useful, non-commodity material and accurate authorship context where appropriate.
Do not optimize by padding or adding markup without a reader benefit
In the preprint’s observational sample of 479 cited and non-cited pages, cited pages had a median of 2,582 words, compared with 1,859 for non-cited pages. That association does not show that adding words causes citations. The same sample reported schema markup on 73.9% of cited pages versus 62.6% of non-cited pages, and self-referencing canonical tags on 84.2% versus 73.5%. The authors described technical-feature effects as modest and cautioned that none was a reliable standalone predictor.
Best Value
Those correlations do not override Google’s statement that special schema is not required for its AI Search features. Add structured data when it accurately describes visible page content and serves a legitimate purpose—not simply to chase a citation.
A practical checklist for publishers
- Check access. Review robots.txt, CDN, and firewall rules for the services relevant to your audience. Follow current OpenAI instructions for OAI-Searchbot and current Perplexity instructions for PerplexityBot; treat user-requested fetching as a distinct behavior.
- Check search eligibility. Confirm that important pages can be crawled and indexed, have useful internal links, present key information as text, and can qualify for a normal search snippet. Make structured data consistent with what readers see.
- Improve the page itself. Answer the intended question directly, organize the material clearly, and provide accurate, useful evidence. Avoid thin pages created for every minor prompt variation.
- Track citations consistently. Keep a stable set of representative prompts. For each check, record the date, exact wording, platform and interface, whether the system searched, and the cited URL or domain. Repeat over time because results can change.
- Use appropriate measurement sources. Google Search Console provides first-party data about Google Search performance. Treat third-party visibility scores as that vendor’s measurements, not as Google’s internal ranking data, and be wary of guarantees.
How to interpret citation tracking
A single answer is a snapshot, not a durable ranking position. Reusing the same prompt, recording the interface and date, and checking whether search was used makes observations more interpretable. Track cited URLs as well as domains: a domain appearing in an answer does not mean the page you hoped to promote was selected.
Keep the evidence in proportion. Provider documentation explains access and product behavior but does not reveal complete ranking formulas. Lee’s preprint offers useful observational evidence, not platform-confirmed ranking factors. Google’s guidance on third-party SEO tools says it does not evaluate those services, so a vendor’s visibility score or guarantee should not be mistaken for an official signal.
