To clean beneath the glass shelf above your Samsung fridge’s crisper drawers, remove the shelf using the release method for your exact refrigerator model, let the cold glass reach room temperature, then wash it gently and dry it before reinstalling. Some shelves have glass that is not designed to separate from its plastic frame, so check the model-specific instructions and never pry the parts apart.
Before you remove the shelf
- Take food off the shelf and make room to handle it safely. Open the relevant door fully.
- Check the user manual for your refrigerator’s model. Samsung says shelf and drawer removal steps can differ by model, including the location of tabs and the shelf’s release method. See Samsung’s shelf and drawer removal and cleaning guide.
- Handle the glass carefully: it can break and cause injury. Do not use warm or hot water on glass that is still cold. Samsung warns, “Never clean the glass shelf with warm or hot water, as this could cause the glass to shatter.”
How to remove the bottom glass shelf
For a simple shelf
- Hold the front of the shelf securely.
- Gently lift the front and slide the shelf out, following your model’s manual.
- Support the shelf as you remove it and set it on a clean, flat surface.
For a crisper-cover shelf with tabs
Some crisper-cover assemblies require more disassembly than a standard shelf. Depending on the model, remove the lower door bins and crisper drawers first, then release the shelf tabs near the drawer divider or water-filter housing. Ease the shelf out while supporting it. Do not force a stuck shelf or guess where a release tab might be; check the manual or Samsung’s model-specific removal instructions.

How to clean beneath the glass
- Let the removed shelf warm to room temperature before washing. Sudden temperature changes can crack or shatter cold glass.
- Wipe the frame and the area beneath the shelf with a soft cloth or sponge and mild detergent diluted in water. For removable glass, Samsung also recommends glass cleaner. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners, especially on plastic parts and refrigerator surfaces.
- Rinse away detergent residue with a clean, damp cloth. Dry the shelf with a clean microfiber or other lint-free cloth before putting it back.
- Clean spills promptly and clean the shelf when it is soiled. Samsung’s shelf and bin cleaning guidance also recommends mild detergent or glass cleaner, a soft cloth or sponge, and microfiber drying.
Can you separate the glass from its plastic frame?
Only separate the glass if the clips on your particular shelf are designed to be removed and the model’s instructions support disassembly. Some Samsung shelf assemblies do not have removable retainer clips and are not intended to come apart. Forcing glass out of a non-separable frame can damage the shelf. If debris or staining remains trapped after cleaning, Samsung says replacement may be necessary; check the model manual rather than prying at the glass.

Reinstall the shelf safely
Reverse the removal steps for your model. Make sure the shelf is fully seated in its supports and that any tabs are engaged before returning food to it. If drawers or door bins were removed, reinstall them as directed in the manual.

When a damaged or uncleanable shelf needs replacement
Find the refrigerator’s model code before looking for a replacement. Samsung Canada’s shelves and drawers overview explains how to use the model code to check compatible parts. Do not choose a shelf by appearance alone: dimensions and attachment details can vary by refrigerator model.
How often should you clean it?
Clean spills promptly and wash the shelf when it becomes dirty. Samsung’s US shelf-removal guide recommends a yearly deep clean of shelves and drawers, while its separate routine refrigerator maintenance guidance describes deep cleaning the refrigerator every six months. Those intervals refer to different scopes of cleaning, so neither should be treated as a universal requirement for every model.
