The player runs the streaming apps and sends the picture and sound to the TV; the TV itself does not gain Wi-Fi menus or apps. First, check that the TV has a free HDMI input.
What you need to connect a non-smart TV to Wi-Fi
- A compatible streaming player: Roku players, Amazon Fire TV Stick devices, and Apple TV are examples of players whose setup instructions use HDMI. The player—not the TV—connects to the internet and runs the streaming interface. See Roku’s TV requirements, Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup guide, and Apple’s Apple TV setup instructions.
- An available HDMI input: Confirm the TV has a free port before choosing a player. For the examples above, HDMI is the connection to the television.
- Power and Wi-Fi credentials: You will need an outlet or the power method specified by the device maker, plus your wireless network name and password.
An HDMI cable or extender may help with a connection or tight port clearance, but neither provides Wi-Fi by itself. Device features, app availability, and account requirements vary; check the exact model and the streaming services you intend to use.

How to set up the streaming player
- Connect the player to HDMI. Plug a streaming stick directly into the TV, or connect a player that uses a separate HDMI cable as its instructions specify.
- Connect power as directed. Use the supplied power adapter and a wall outlet when the manufacturer recommends it. A TV’s USB port may not supply enough power; Amazon advises against powering a Fire TV Stick directly from the TV’s USB port, and Roku notes that some TV USB ports are insufficient. Roku’s setup instructions and Amazon’s guide describe device-specific setup.
- Select the matching input on the TV. Use the TV remote’s input/source control and choose the HDMI port used by the player. You should see the player’s setup screen.
- Follow the on-screen steps. Choose your Wi-Fi network, enter its password, and complete any sign-in or account steps requested by the player. Amazon’s Fire TV setup, for example, includes signing in to an Amazon account.
- Open a streaming app on the player. The player provides the internet-connected menus and apps; the TV displays its output.
Choose a player that fits the TV and your connection
- TV connection: The Roku, Fire TV Stick, and Apple TV setup examples covered here use HDMI. If your TV has no HDMI input, the official setup instructions cited above do not establish a dependable adapter solution for every older TV. Confirm the TV’s inputs, the player’s output, and signal compatibility before buying a converter.
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Wi-Fi setup is documented for these players. Ethernet is available on some Roku and Apple TV models, but port availability depends on the exact model; check its specifications before relying on a wired connection. See Roku setup information and Apple TV setup instructions.
- Resolution and HDR: A 4K-capable player cannot make a non-4K TV display 4K. 4K or HDR playback requires compatible capability across the relevant equipment and content. Apple lists its Apple TV 4K specifications at Apple TV 4K technical specifications; check the specific player and TV models rather than assuming features match.
- Placement and power: A stick can be awkward to fit if nearby cables or the TV casing obstruct the HDMI port. An HDMI extender may solve a clearance issue. It does not replace the player’s power connection or create a network connection.
- Accounts and services: Account sign-in and available apps depend on the player, service, and location. Confirm requirements for the exact device and region before setup.
Fix common setup problems
The TV shows a blank screen
Check that the player is powered and that the TV is set to the HDMI input where it is connected. If the stick does not fit cleanly, use an extender only if appropriate for the device and port arrangement.

Follow the manufacturer’s power directions and try the supplied wall adapter rather than relying on the TV’s USB port. Some TV USB ports do not provide enough power for a streaming player.

Your Wi-Fi network does not appear
Rescan for networks, confirm the network name, and re-enter the password carefully. Roku’s internet connection guide includes network setup and troubleshooting steps; consult the corresponding official guide for your player model if the issue continues.
You are considering a phone hotspot
A hotspot can provide a temporary internet connection, but streaming and device updates can use substantial mobile data. Check your mobile plan’s allowance and terms before using it. Roku also addresses hotspots in its internet connection guidance.

What the setup does—and does not—change
A streaming player lets you watch internet services through the TV, but it does not, based on the manufacturer setup paths described above, make the TV’s own menus, tuner, or other built-in functions internet-connected. You use the player’s interface and remote or controls for its streaming features; the television serves as the display and audio output.
