Ahrefs’ September 15, 2026 list ranks companies by growth in brand-name searches, not by revenue or profit. Treat it as a way to find businesses to investigate, not as a profitability leaderboard.
What “profitable SaaS” means—and what the available evidence shows
Bootstrapped describes a company’s funding path; it does not mean the company is profitable. Revenue, annual recurring revenue (ARR), monthly recurring revenue (MRR), search demand, customer retention, and profit measure different things. A company can grow its revenue or attract more searches while still spending more than it earns.

The Ahrefs list is a timely discovery tool: it analyzed around 1,500 bootstrapped SaaS companies and ranked the selected companies by the year-over-year change in monthly searches for their brand names, comparing the latest 12 months with the preceding 12 months. That metric can suggest rising brand interest, but it does not reveal sales, costs, or net income. Ahrefs’ September 2026 article does not turn the list into verified examples of profitable businesses.
Likewise, a revenue disclosure is not proof of profit. To substantiate profitability, a case study needs a dated, attributable profit figure and enough context to understand what it represents—such as the accounting period and whether it is operating or net profit. The sources available for this list do not provide a comparable, audited profit dataset for the 19 companies.
19 bootstrapped SaaS companies to investigate
These are the 19 companies named in Ahrefs’ September 15, 2026 list, presented alphabetically rather than as a ranking. The source’s ordering reflects search-demand growth, not financial performance. The list identifies them as bootstrapped; the source does not establish company-level profitability for them.

Use the names as starting points for company-specific research. For each one, look for an original company or founder disclosure that identifies the date, currency, and measure; distinguish revenue from ARR, MRR, and profit; and check whether the figure is recurring, one-time, or tied to a particular period. A secondary list or a rise in brand searches can point toward a source, but cannot replace it.

How to judge a SaaS case study
Start with the customer and problem
Identify who pays for the product, what recurring problem it solves, and why a customer would keep using it. This makes the business model easier to assess: the relevant question is not merely whether a product has a large audience, but whether a defined group has a continuing reason to pay.

Look for evidence of how the company reaches buyers—such as search visibility, integrations, partnerships, direct sales, or a user community. Search interest can help identify a possible distribution trend, but it should not be mistaken for paying customers or durable acquisition.

Label every financial claim
Record the exact figure, the company or person who disclosed it, the date, the currency, and the accounting measure. MRR is monthly recurring revenue; ARR is an annualized recurring-revenue measure. Neither is profit. Revenue less expenses is not necessarily the same as cash generated or profit under a particular accounting method, so do not infer one from the other.
Separate company disclosures from benchmarks
Company-reported figures describe an individual business and should be attributed as such. Industry benchmarks describe a defined group and cannot be assigned to a named company without company-specific evidence.

What the 2026 bootstrapped SaaS benchmarks can—and cannot—tell you
SaaS Capital’s 2026 annual survey covered more than 1,000 private B2B SaaS companies. For bootstrapped companies with $3 million–$20 million ARR, it reported median annual revenue growth of 15%, net revenue retention (NRR) of 103%, and gross revenue retention (GRR) of 91%. At the 90th percentile in that segment, the figures were 42.3% growth, 117.9% NRR, and 100% GRR.
These are survey results for a specific company segment, not universal targets or reported results for the 19 names above. NRR captures recurring revenue changes from existing customers, including expansion and contraction; GRR reflects retained revenue before expansion. The measures help frame performance, but neither establishes profitability.

Where to find revenue leads—and how to verify them
Two secondary roundups point readers toward public disclosures, but they are leads rather than conclusive financial evidence. Better Launch’s SaaS examples article groups businesses by reported MRR bands and says its revenue numbers are public disclosures. Its entries include broad or illustrative categories as well as named products, so verify a specific claim against the original company or founder disclosure before relying on it.
Steal What Works’ roundup of bootstrapped SaaS making over $10K a month also links to company and founder sources. A monthly revenue threshold still does not show expenses or profit. Before using any number, establish whether it is MRR, ARR, another revenue figure, or profit, and note who disclosed it and when.
Quick Recap
How to use these examples without mistaking growth for profit
- Choose companies serving customers or solving recurring problems relevant to your own product idea.
- Study their business model and customer-acquisition path separately from their funding status.
- Use the Ahrefs search-growth list to discover names, not to rank financial outcomes.
- Attribute company-level numbers to dated original disclosures and label the metric precisely.
- Use survey benchmarks only when the company fits the survey’s stated segment.
