To check all the main update categories on a Pixel, look in two official Settings screens: Settings > About phone > Android version shows your Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update, and build number; Settings > System > Software updates shows system-update status and installation prompts. A community troubleshooting checklist also points to a less obvious System services screen, but that is an extra check—not Google’s official update-status screen.
Which Pixel settings page should you check?
There is not one screen that serves every update purpose. Google’s official Pixel guidance separates inspecting installed version details from checking and installing a system update.

| Settings destination | What it tells you | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Settings > About phone > Android version | Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update, and build number | Official Google guidance |
| Settings > System > Software updates (sometimes shown as System update) | System update status and available installation prompts | Official Google guidance |
| Google services and preferences > All services > System services | An additional place to check for system-service updates during troubleshooting | Community Product Expert guidance; not an official completeness check |
Menu labels can differ slightly across Pixel devices. Google’s official instructions identify the first two routes and note that some devices may display “Software updates” or “System update.” See Google Pixel Phone Help: Check & update your Android version.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How to check the update categories
- Inspect the installed versions. Open Settings > About phone > Android version. Check the Android version, Android security update date, Google Play system update date, and build number shown on the screen.
- Check for a system update. Open Settings > System > Software updates, or System update if that is the label on your Pixel. Review the status and follow any on-screen instructions.
- Use the additional troubleshooting check only if needed. A Google Pixel Community Product Expert recommends checking Google services and preferences > All services > System services, updating Play Store apps, and revisiting the Google Play system update entry. This is community advice, not a guarantee that every update category is current. See the Pixel Community troubleshooting thread.
Before installing an update
Google recommends connecting to Wi-Fi and charging the device to at least 75% before updating. The 75% figure is practical preparation advice, not a minimum requirement established by a study. See Google’s update instructions.

Why an update may not appear to be complete
A downloaded Android update may need a restart
Google says Pixel phones install downloaded Android updates in the background, and the update becomes active the next time the phone restarts. If the update has downloaded, restart the device to complete activation.
Availability is not identical for every Pixel
Google says, “Update schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and mobile carrier.” An update not appearing yet does not by itself establish that something is wrong. Google also notes that older devices may not be able to run newer Android versions. For timing and version availability, see Google Pixel Phone Help.

An error needs context before it can be diagnosed
If an update option is missing or installation fails, note the exact message, the screen where it appears, and your Pixel model and software details before trying a proposed fix. A community user reported that a Google Play system update became accessible after installing system-service updates, but that individual account does not establish a general cause or reliable remedy. See the community discussion of an inaccessible Google Play system update.
