What matters is how someone uses the system, what they need from it, and whether it complements or replaces human connection. Pop culture offers a useful lens for questions about simulated intimacy and always-on availability; it is not evidence of what AI use does in real life.
What counts as an AI companion?
An AI companion is generally a conversational experience designed around an ongoing, relationship-oriented interaction. A general-purpose assistant is different: it is not necessarily designed as a companion, even though people may use it to talk about personal matters, seek emotional support, or simply socialize. That distinction matters when comparing products and studies, because some research examines purpose-built companion chatbots while other work includes general-purpose systems used socially.

Fictional AI companions can help frame questions about an entity that is always available, seems attentive, or invites trust. But fictional stories are interpretive lenses, not forecasts. The evidence about real systems comes from studies of actual users and interactions, and those findings are mixed.
Can an AI companion ease loneliness?
Some users report support, trust, or emotional connection, and some studies find experiences consistent with social support. That does not establish that AI companions reduce loneliness for everyone, or that they provide the reciprocal understanding of a human relationship.

A 2024 MIT Media Lab survey of 404 regular companion-chatbot users found that its model explained about half the variation in loneliness. Chatbot use did not directly predict loneliness in the model; user characteristics—including neuroticism, social-network size, and problematic use—mattered. The participants were active users, not a representative sample of the general population. Read the MIT Media Lab study.
A 2026 survey by the Imagining the Digital Future Center and Elon University found that many users described support and emotional connection, but most respondents in the reported comparison still preferred talking with friends or family. Its definition of AI companion users included people using general-purpose LLMs for social, emotional, and personal purposes, so the results should not be read as applying only to dedicated companion apps. When does use look more like dependence?
Researchers have measured dependence and problematic-use patterns, but the available studies do not justify a simple rule that using an AI companion causes dependence. Frequency alone is not the whole story: purpose, intensity, personal circumstances, and whether AI displaces relationships all shape the question.
OpenAI and MIT Media Lab analyzed nearly 40 million ChatGPT interactions using automated analysis and targeted surveys. They reported that affective cues were absent from the vast majority of conversations assessed; affective interactions were concentrated in a small share of heavy Advanced Voice Mode users. Their separate four-week randomized controlled trial involved nearly 1,000 participants and assessed self-reported psychosocial outcomes, including loneliness, dependence, and problematic use. Voice use showed mixed associations: brief use was associated with better wellbeing, while prolonged daily use was associated with worse outcomes. Personal and non-personal conversations also had different associations with loneliness, dependence, and problematic use. These findings concern the studied ChatGPT use and do not establish a causal effect for all companion systems. See the study details.

A five-week exploratory Microsoft Research study followed 149 participants encouraged to use one of four AI tools for social and emotional interactions. In that active-use group, perceived attachment rose by 32.99 percentage points, perceived AI empathy by 25.8 points, and motivation to use AI for entertainment by 22.90 points. Participants also reported greater comfort seeking personal help, discussing stress, seeking social support, and discussing health. These are changes reported in that study—not population prevalence estimates, clinical benefits, or proof of long-term safety. Read the Microsoft Research study.
What does emotional attachment tell us—and what doesn’t it?
People can experience an interaction as caring or emotionally meaningful without the system feeling, understanding, or reciprocating in the human sense. A reported bond is evidence about the user’s experience; it is not evidence that the AI has emotions or human-like comprehension.

Those figures are not percentages of all adults. The same report found that most respondents still preferred conversations with friends or family over AI in the comparison it reported. The poll report describes its findings and definitions.
Why teen use deserves a separate lens
In a Common Sense Media survey of 1,060 U.S. teens aged 13–17 conducted in April and May 2025, 72% said they had used AI companions and 52% were regular users, defined as using them at least a few times monthly. These numbers describe that population and survey period; they should not be generalized to teens elsewhere or to later years without newer evidence.

For parents and educators, the useful questions are practical: what the teen uses the system for, how often, whether it is affecting sleep or offline relationships, and whether the teen can turn to a trusted person when support is needed. The survey establishes substantial use, not a uniform outcome for every teen. Read the Common Sense Media report.
How to judge whether use is supportive or displacing connection
No single usage threshold in these studies separates healthy use from harmful use. A more useful assessment looks at the role the system plays in someone’s life:
- Purpose: Is the person seeking practical help, entertainment, emotional support, or a substitute for relationships?
- Intensity and duration: Is use occasional, or is it becoming prolonged and difficult to stop? The ChatGPT trial’s associations differed between brief and prolonged daily voice use.
- Personal circumstances: Social-network size, individual traits, and problematic-use patterns mattered in the MIT Media Lab active-user study.
- Product design: A purpose-built companion experience and a general assistant used socially are not interchangeable, even if both feel conversational.
- Effect on human contact: Does AI help someone prepare to reach out or manage a difficult moment, or does it increasingly replace contact with friends, family, or other support?
The evidence points to heterogeneous experiences rather than one universal outcome. A 2025 AAAI/ACM paper and the 2024 MIT Media Lab study describe users who report increased social confidence alongside others whose circumstances raise concern about further isolation. The MIT survey focused on active users, so it cannot estimate how common these profiles are in the broader population. Read the AAAI/ACM paper.

What pop culture can—and cannot—tell us
Stories about artificial companions make questions of availability, trust, and simulated intimacy vivid. They can prompt readers to ask what happens when a system is responsive at any hour, or when conversational fluency feels like empathy. But fiction does not prove that real AI companions will rescue people from loneliness or make them dependent. Those outcomes have to be evaluated through evidence about actual users, use patterns, and product design—and the current evidence remains early, varied, and insufficient to settle long-term population effects.
