Steam’s wishlist alerts are easiest to live with when you treat the wishlist as a buying list, select one notification channel, and use a separate price rule for games that need a tighter trigger. Steam’s own alerts generally cover qualifying promotions rather than your personal target price: Valve’s current documentation describes a discount of at least 20% on the lowest-priced package that remains active for more than eight hours. Email notices for the same app are normally spaced by one to two weeks, although busy sale periods can delay delivery.
Why Steam sends more sale alerts than you want
A Steam wishlist is both a shopping reminder and a notification source. Every game left on it can qualify for a promotional message, including titles you added casually, already purchased elsewhere, or no longer intend to play. The alert system does not know which games are “serious” purchases unless you maintain the list yourself.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Steam can notify you by email or through its mobile app when wishlist games are included in promotions such as Daily Deals, Midweek Deals or Weekend Deals. Those are separate delivery channels, so enabling both can make one promotion feel like duplicate messaging. Steam’s promotional rule is also broader than a personal “buy now” rule: a qualifying discount does not have to reach the price you personally consider worthwhile.
The practical fix is therefore three-part: reduce the number of titles that can trigger alerts, keep only one first-party channel, and move target-price filtering to a waitlist service when Steam’s broad threshold is not selective enough.

How Steam’s native wishlist trigger works
Valve’s current Steamworks wishlist documentation (2026) describes the promotional trigger as “any type of discount at or above 20%,” with two additional conditions: the discount must affect the lowest-priced package and last more than eight hours. The trigger description is documentation, not a guarantee that every user will receive an immediate message; Valve notes that the rules can change.
| Condition | What Valve documents | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Discount size | At least 20% | A game can alert you even when its sale price is still above your budget. |
| Package affected | The lowest-priced package | The qualifying reduction must apply to the least expensive package Steam is considering, not merely to an expensive bundle. |
| Promotion length | More than eight hours | Very short price events may not qualify for the documented promotional notification. |
| Email frequency | Usually one email per app every one to two weeks | The same game should not generate a new email for every short-term change, but this is a cooldown rather than a target-price setting. |
| Delivery timing | Messages may be spread over several hours | A notice is not necessarily a real-time signal, especially during high-volume sales. |
Steam may also group several wishlist titles in one email. That batching can reduce the number of messages while making the delivery time less predictable. Only accounts with verified email addresses receive Steam email notifications.
Set up a low-noise Steam configuration
1. Turn the wishlist into a purchase-intent list
Open your Steam wishlist and remove games that no longer meet one of these tests: you expect to play them, you would buy them at a plausible price, and you still need a reminder. Remove titles you bought on another store, received in a bundle, abandoned, or added only to bookmark for later. A shorter list lowers alert volume without changing any account setting.

- Email: best when you prefer to scan a batch later, search old notices, or avoid phone interruptions.
- Mobile push: best when you want a prompt while away from your computer and accept that it may arrive during a sale.
Steam supports both channels, but using both is the most common source of duplicate-feeling alerts. Keep the channel that matches how you actually make buying decisions and disable the other.
3. Adjust Steam’s email categories
Valve’s account instructions place the communication controls here:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Sign in to Steam.
- Open the account menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select Account Details.
- Open Manage Email Preferences.
- Review the communication categories and clear the wishlist or promotional category if you do not want email.
- Save the change, then send yourself a test or wait for the next qualifying event to confirm that the setting is behaving as intended.
The exact labels can change with Steam’s account interface. If you cannot find the page, use the account-details area rather than changing notification permissions only in your operating system; an operating-system block can hide a push message without changing Steam’s email behavior.
4. Disable the duplicate mobile channel
In the Steam mobile app, open its notification settings and turn off wishlist sale notifications if email is your chosen channel. If push is your preferred channel, leave wishlist notifications enabled in the app and remove the corresponding email category from Manage Email Preferences. Phone-level notification controls can be used as a final quiet-hours safeguard, but they do not replace the account-level choice.
5. Check the result during a normal week
After changing settings, observe one ordinary week rather than judging the setup during a major seasonal event. Confirm that the surviving channel delivers the messages you expect and that the disabled channel is not still active through a second account or mail alias. If several people use the same device, check which Steam account is signed in before changing preferences.

What native alerts cannot do
Steam’s documented 20% rule is a promotion filter, not a personal price ceiling. There is no documented native setting in the supplied Steam controls for “notify me only below $15,” “notify me at 75% off,” or “notify me once and never again for this title.” A game discounted by 20% can therefore alert you even if you would only buy it at 50% off.
The cooldown also limits how the system behaves. Valve documents roughly one to two weeks between emails about the same app, with possible extension during high-traffic periods such as seasonal sales. The email can arrive hours after a promotion starts, and several titles may be grouped together. Do not use a Steam wishlist email as a guaranteed launch-time or lowest-ever-price alert.
These limitations are useful if your goal is broad awareness: you are less likely to miss a qualifying sale and you do not need another account. They are frustrating if you have a fixed budget, watch many titles, or want alerts only when a game crosses a specific discount or price.
Use a stricter price rule with IsThereAnyDeal
IsThereAnyDeal provides a separate waitlist approach for readers who need more control. Its onboarding information says you can import an entire Steam wishlist, place games on a waitlist, and define notification rules so alerts are limited to deals that satisfy your settings. Its API documentation describes notification events as containing only games and deals that passed those user-defined notification settings.
Import and organize the list
- Create or sign in to an IsThereAnyDeal account and review its current account-linking and privacy prompts.
- Use the service’s Steam-wishlist import option to bring over the titles you actually want to track.
- Remove imported entries that are bookmarks rather than realistic purchases; importing everything reproduces the same noise you were trying to remove.
- Place the remaining games on the service’s waitlist and confirm which stores and editions each entry represents.
Define a rule that reflects your budget
Choose a rule you can act on, such as a minimum discount percentage, a target price, or both if the service currently supports that combination. A percentage rule is useful when game prices vary widely; a fixed target is clearer when you have a hard spending limit. Set a different rule for a $10 indie game and a $60 release instead of applying one percentage to the entire list.

Review the service’s current store coverage before relying on a rule. A deal may be listed for a store or edition you do not use, and coverage, account-linking flow and notification options can change. IsThereAnyDeal is a separate service, so its alerts are subject to its own availability and data policies rather than Steam’s account controls.
Decide whether to keep Steam alerts
You can keep one Steam channel for broad coverage and use the waitlist for strict price alerts, but that creates two streams to maintain. A quieter arrangement is to disable Steam wishlist email and push, then let the waitlist service handle qualifying deals. The right choice depends on whether missing a broad Steam promotion is more costly to you than receiving occasional extra messages.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Steam alerts versus waitlist rules
| Approach | Threshold control | Channels and grouping | Coverage | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam native alerts | Valve-defined promotion rule; generally at least 20% under the documented package and duration conditions | Choose email, mobile push, or both; emails may batch several titles | Steam wishlist sale and launch notifications | Readers who want a simple first-party setup |
| IsThereAnyDeal waitlist | User-defined deal rules, including the service’s available price or discount settings | Configured notification events contain only deals that pass your rules | Imported Steam wishlist plus stores supported by the service and your settings | Readers who need target-price or minimum-discount filtering |
The trade-off is control versus simplicity. Steam requires no additional service and follows the account you already use, but its trigger is broad. A waitlist can be more selective, yet it introduces another account, another notification system and possible differences in store or edition coverage.
Troubleshoot missing, duplicate or late notifications
You receive two notices for one sale
- Check whether both Steam email and mobile wishlist notifications are enabled.
- Check whether a separate waitlist service is also watching the same game.
- Look for more than one Steam account or email address on the device.
- Keep one channel and one rule set for each purpose, then reassess after the next promotion.
You receive too many notices
- Prune the wishlist first; account settings cannot distinguish serious purchases from casual bookmarks.
- Disable one of Steam’s two channels.
- Move strict price filtering to a waitlist rule instead of expecting Steam’s 20% promotion threshold to behave like a target price.
- During a seasonal sale, allow for delayed or batched delivery before changing settings repeatedly.
You receive no Steam email
- Verify the email address on the Steam account; Valve limits Steam email notifications to verified addresses.
- Recheck Account Details > Manage Email Preferences.
- Inspect spam, promotions and automatic-filter folders.
- Confirm that the game was discounted under the documented conditions: at least 20%, affecting the lowest-priced package and lasting more than eight hours.
- Remember that the same app may be within its one-to-two-week email cooldown.
The notice arrives after the sale starts
Steam says emails can be distributed over several hours, and high-traffic periods can stretch normal timing. Treat the alert as a reminder to check the promotion, not as a promise of instant delivery. For a time-sensitive purchase, open the game’s store page directly rather than waiting for an email.

A waitlist alert shows a deal you cannot use
Review the service’s store and edition settings. A rule can pass for a supported retailer, package or region that does not match your buying preference. Remove that store from the rule or narrow the tracked edition where the service allows it.
Best Value
A maintenance routine that keeps alerts useful
- After buying a game: remove it from both Steam and any imported waitlist.
- After a major sale: delete titles you ignored and tighten rules that produced messages you never considered.
- Before seasonal events: confirm your chosen channel, verified email status and phone notification permission.
- Once or twice a year: review whether a third-party service still covers the stores and notification options you rely on.
- When your budget changes: update target prices or discount minimums rather than adding more channels.
This routine separates list maintenance from notification settings. Removing an unwanted game prevents future alerts at the source, while channel and price rules control how the remaining alerts reach you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Steam alert me only when a game reaches a specific dollar price?
Steam’s documented wishlist controls describe a promotional discount trigger, not a user-entered dollar target. Use a waitlist service with a target-price rule if that setting is available and matches the store and edition you intend to buy.
Will turning off Steam email remove wishlist alerts from the mobile app?
No. Steam treats email and mobile push as separate channels. Disable the mobile-app wishlist setting as well if you want neither channel.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why did several wishlist games appear in one email?
Steam may group multiple wishlist titles in a message, and delivery can be spread over several hours. Grouping is normal and does not mean each title generated a separate email.
Are Steam wishlist notifications guaranteed for every discount?
No. Valve’s documented rule has discount, lowest-priced-package and duration conditions, and the trigger description may change. Delivery can also be delayed or suppressed by the per-app email cooldown.
