At Costco’s customer-service pricing published March 16, 2026, Executive costs $65 more per year than Gold Star; at a 2% reward rate, $3,250 in qualifying purchases after upgrading earns $65 before refunds and other reward rules. That is a break-even calculation, not a promise that Executive is worthwhile for every household.
Gold Star or Executive: start with the break-even point
Costco Customer Service lists Gold Star at $65 a year and Executive as an additional $65 a year, with a 2% annual reward on qualifying purchases. The reward is capped at $1,250 in a 12-month period. Using those published figures, $65 ÷ 0.02 = $3,250 in qualifying annual spending to earn a reward equal to the upgrade fee. The $3,250 figure is arithmetic based on Costco’s fee and rate, not a Costco-published spending benchmark. Use the threshold as a starting point. It assumes you are Executive before the purchases, that they qualify, and that refunds or other reward rules do not reduce the result. Benefits such as services or offers may matter to you below that threshold, but their value depends on your use and local alternatives; do not assign them an assumed dollar amount. Costco says an upgrade fee can be prorated for the remaining membership period on its Join Costco page.

Costco’s campaign page has also surfaced $60 Gold Star and $120 Executive prices, so the sources do not show one consistent price across every page. Check the live membership checkout price before joining or upgrading rather than combining the two price sets. Costco membership page.

Calculate the reward from eligible spending—not total spending
Estimate a year of purchases by the eligible cardholders, then remove excluded transactions and account for refunds. In the United States, only purchases by the primary member and the active primary household cardholder apply; purchases made before the primary member upgrades do not. The reward FAQ explains those eligibility rules and the annual reward calculation.
- Exclude gasoline and food court purchases. They do not earn the U.S. Executive 2% reward, even though member-only gasoline pricing may have separate value. Costco’s membership page describes gasoline as a membership offering, while its Executive Rewards information gives exclusions.
- Check service transactions individually. Pharmacy, optical, and tire services may be useful membership offerings, but service fees and several service-related charges are excluded from the reward. Do not assume every charge connected with a Costco service qualifies; consult the exclusion list for the actual transaction.
- Handle Costco Travel separately. Some qualifying direct Travel purchases can earn the reward after travel is completed, and the member must have Executive status when travel starts. Some charges and third-party travel are excluded. Check the reward FAQ and Costco Travel terms for the booking.
A simple estimate is: qualifying annual purchases × 0.02, up to the $1,250 cap in a 12-month period. It is an estimate, not a guaranteed payout: refunds and reward conditions can change the amount. Leave gas, food court purchases, ineligible cardholder purchases, and other excluded transactions out of the calculation.

Time purchases and redemption around the reward rules
The reward starts accruing on purchases made after upgrading; earlier purchases do not count. Costco says it issues the reward approximately two months before renewal. Under the FAQ’s stated U.S. redemption rules, members can use it toward most merchandise at warehouse front-end registers, but not self-checkout. To use the reward at Costco.com, the FAQ says a member may buy a Costco Shop Card with it at a warehouse. Check the current rules before relying on a particular redemption method. Costco lists gasoline, pharmacy, optical, tires, food court, and Travel among its membership offerings. These are places to compare, not automatic savings: check local availability, current terms, and the price or service you would otherwise choose. Costco’s membership page describes its offerings, and its Travel site lists trip options such as vacations, hotels, cruises, and rental cars.

Offers can have narrow eligibility. Costco’s Executive Reward FAQ says a Costco Travel and Viator partnership offers a Costco-exclusive 15% discount at checkout on activities, tours, and excursions booked through CostcoTravel.com starting June 4, 2026. The available information does not establish that the offer applies to every account or location, so count it only after checking your own eligibility and current terms. Shop bulk quantities you can use
A lower unit price does not help if food or household goods expire, go unused, or take up space you need. Before buying a larger pack, consider how quickly your household will use it, whether you have room to store it, and whether the quantity suits your routine. Airtight pantry containers can help organize bulk dry goods, but they are a convenience choice—not evidence that a bulk purchase saves money.
Make the decision with your own numbers
- Estimate qualified spending for the coming membership year. Use purchases by the primary and active primary household cardholder, and exclude transactions that do not qualify.
- Apply the reward rate to eligible spending. At the cited $65 upgrade fee and 2% rate, $3,250 in eligible spending is the fee-equivalent point, subject to the reward cap and other rules.
- Compare benefits separately. Consider a service, offer, or convenience only if you would use it and have checked the terms and relevant alternatives.
- Confirm the current price and rules before paying. Membership prices, offers, exclusions, and local availability can change.
