Back up first: this process deletes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings on the Windows installation you replace.
Before you start: protect your files and check your license
- Back up anything you want to keep. Use an external drive, another USB drive, or cloud storage such as OneDrive. A clean install removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. See Microsoft’s installation-media guidance.
- Check your Windows edition and activation. In Windows, open Settings > System > Activation and note whether your license is digital or product-key based, and whether your edition is Home or Pro. If you have a digital license, link it to your Microsoft account before reinstalling when applicable. Install the same edition covered by your license.
- Use a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space. Creating installation media erases the drive. The working PC needs a reliable internet connection to download Windows. Microsoft’s instructions are at Create installation media for Windows.
- Identify the target disk. If the PC has more than one internal drive, work out which physical disk contains the Windows installation you intend to replace. Deleting the wrong disk’s partitions can destroy data.
- Find the boot instructions for the exact PC model. Boot-menu keys and procedures vary by manufacturer; there is no single key that applies to every computer.
Create the Windows 11 installation USB
- On a working PC, open Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page.
- Under Create Windows 11 Installation Media, select Download Now.
- Run
MediaCreationTool.exeand follow its prompts to create installation media on the blank USB drive. The process deletes the drive’s existing contents.
Microsoft also offers an ISO download for uses such as virtual machines or DVD media. For installing from a USB drive, the Media Creation Tool is the direct option in Microsoft’s documented workflow.

Boot the target PC from the USB
- Safely finish any work on the target PC, then connect the installation USB.
- Start or restart the PC using the USB-boot procedure provided by its manufacturer. If a boot menu appears, select the USB installation drive.
- If Windows Setup does not appear, the PC may not be configured to boot from that drive. Consult the manufacturer’s boot-order instructions for your model rather than guessing at a universal key.
Run Windows Setup and choose the clean-install route
- Choose your language and keyboard settings in Windows Setup.
- Select Install Windows 11. Confirm the notice that files, apps, and settings will be deleted; this is the destructive clean-install path.
- If Setup asks for a product key, choose I don’t have a product key only if you are reinstalling an edition already licensed for this device. Select the edition that matches the existing license. If you do not have a product key or a digital license associated with the device, resolve the license situation before continuing. Setup may detect a key embedded in the PC’s firmware and skip the key prompt.
- Accept the applicable notices and license terms.
- At the screen asking where to install Windows, identify the intended disk before changing anything. In Microsoft’s example procedure, users delete partitions on Disk 0 until Disk 0 Unallocated Space remains, then select that space and choose Next. Disk numbering and layouts can differ, so do not treat “Disk 0” as a universal identification of the correct physical drive. Do not delete partitions on other disks.
- Select Install and let Setup restart when required. Complete the Windows configuration steps and connect to the internet.
Will Windows activate after reinstalling?
If the PC has a digital license for the same Windows edition, reinstalling that edition on the same device and connecting to the internet generally allows Windows to activate automatically. A digital license does not require typing a product key. If you linked the license to a Microsoft account, sign in with that account after installation when relevant.
A different edition can require a different license: for example, a device licensed for Windows 11 Home needs a valid Pro license to install Windows 11 Pro. A Microsoft account can be associated with a digital license, but it is not itself a substitute for a valid license. See Microsoft’s Windows activation guidance.

Is a USB clean install the right recovery option?
A clean install is useful when you need a fresh Windows installation or other recovery routes are unavailable, but it is more disruptive than every alternative. Microsoft distinguishes these options on its Windows recovery options page:
| Option | What it does | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Reset this PC | Reinstalls Windows from the device and can offer the choice to keep or remove personal files. | You want to use the built-in reset route and choose how much personal data to retain. |
| Reinstall using Windows Update | Reinstalls the current version while keeping files, apps, and settings. | You want a less disruptive reinstall and Windows offers this recovery option. |
| Clean install from USB | Installs Windows from external media and removes personal files, apps, and settings. | You need to start fresh or the other recovery routes are unavailable. |
Do not confuse booting from installation media for a clean install with running setup.exe from a working Windows desktop and choosing what to keep; those are different installation paths. If you suspect malware, Microsoft recommends first trying a scan with Windows Security. A clean install from media can help remove malware from the Windows installation if the problem continues.
