How to Get Stone Bricks in Minecraft: Crafting, Stonecutter and Variants

Four stone in a 2×2 crafting grid make four stone bricks. Here is the stonecutter shortcut and how to make mossy, cracked and chiseled variants.

Place four stone blocks in a 2×2 square in a crafting table and you get four stone bricks. A stonecutter can also turn stone directly into stone bricks. Either way, you start with stone, not cobblestone.

Step 1: Get stone

Mine stone with a pickaxe. Without Silk Touch, a stone block normally drops cobblestone, not stone. Put the cobblestone in a furnace with fuel and smelt it back into stone. With Silk Touch, you collect the stone block itself and can skip the furnace.

Step 2: Choose how to make the bricks

Crafting table

  1. Open a crafting table.
  2. Fill the 2×2 area (any 2×2 block of slots in the 3×3 grid) with stone.
  3. Take the four stone bricks from the output slot.

The Minecraft Wiki’s Stone Bricks page lists stone as the ingredient.

Stonecutter

Put stone into a stonecutter and pick stone bricks from the options shown. The same page notes it can also produce chiseled stone bricks straight from stone. This saves crafting steps if you already have one.

Which route is best

Crafting from mined stone is the most predictable way to get large quantities. Use a stonecutter if you have one nearby. Structures and trading are handy only when they happen to be close.

These recipes come from the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki, not Mojang documentation. If a recipe doesn’t work, check your Java or Bedrock version.
