Understand the combat loop
Valor Mortis is a first-person Soulslike from One More Level, published by Lyrical Games. Its combat combines weapon attacks, evasive movement, parries and counterattacks with left-hand Transmutations. Stamina is best treated as a decision budget: spending it on one more attack may leave you without room to react to the next enemy move.

The publisher’s overview describes parrying and counterattacks as part of the combat system, but the available official materials do not establish exact parry windows, stamina costs, recovery rates or attack-cancel rules. Learn those details in your current build rather than relying on a specific number or a guide made for an earlier version.
How to manage stamina
Stop chaining attacks automatically
Attack in short, deliberate sequences. After a strike or two, pause long enough to read the enemy and decide whether to continue, defend or reposition. The goal is not to save stamina indefinitely; it is to avoid spending the whole bar without a plan for what happens next.

Keep room for a response
Before committing to another attack or evasive action, consider whether you will still have the capacity to handle an incoming move. If an enemy is preparing to attack, prioritize a defense you can execute over squeezing in extra damage. The exact stamina costs are not confirmed in the official overview, so use the on-screen bar and your own play to judge your available margin.
Learn parries without guessing the timing
Practice on a readable attack
Watch an enemy’s movement and choose a predictable attack to learn. Try parrying when the attack is about to connect, then observe whether the game registers the parry and whether it creates an opening to counter. Adjust from what the current build shows you; do not assume that timing advice from a demo or an older guide still applies.

Use the opening deliberately
A successful parry can create a chance to counter, according to a fan-maintained combat guide. Treat that as a useful description of the intended rhythm, not a guarantee about every enemy or encounter. Once you see an opening, take a measured counter rather than reflexively spending all remaining stamina.

Check the controls menu for your platform and input scheme before practicing. Official materials do not document a universal button mapping or a verified timing window, and control layouts can differ.

Choose a weapon for the fight and your comfort
The publisher says that weapon variety and matching a weapon to an enemy reward a thoughtful approach. Its overview gives two examples with distinct trade-offs:

These descriptions do not establish a universal best beginner weapon or a damage ranking. Try the available options and weigh the enemy’s vulnerabilities, the distance you prefer, and how comfortable you are with each weapon’s pace.

A fan-maintained guide says the Rapier lacks a block, relies on perfectly timed parries and has an ability that can hit weak points without firearm ammunition. Because this is secondary guidance and may reflect an earlier build, verify those mechanics in the version you are playing before building your approach around them.
Use Transmutations to widen your options
Transmutations are left-hand abilities that the publisher describes as serving several roles: dealing damage, buffing, debuffing and traversal. The overview names Fire, Shield and Grapple as examples. Think of them as tools for changing how you handle a situation, not merely as additional attacks. Consider whether you need an offensive effect, a defensive option or a way to traverse before choosing what to use.
Spend progression resources to address a real problem
At Lanterns, Catalysts can be spent to improve health, stamina or parry. Ambers help customize builds. Rather than following an unsupported “best” early build, notice what is repeatedly causing trouble and choose an upgrade that addresses it: survivability if you are struggling to stay alive, stamina if you need more room to act, or parry improvement if that part of your approach needs support.
Be cautious with demo-era advice
One More Level says the public demo used bespoke chapters and was not representative of the final game’s polish and balance. The official announcement also describes work on combat readability, hitboxes, staggering, boss difficulty and performance. A demo guide can help you recognize systems, but do not treat its boss difficulty or timing descriptions as confirmed launch behavior.
Where and when the game is available
Lyrical Games announced an October 13, 2026 launch for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. The US PlayStation Store listing describes a single-player PS5 version with DualSense vibration and trigger-effect support. On September 30, 2026, the publisher announced US prices of $39.99 for the Standard Edition and $59.99 for the Deluxe Edition; these are announcement prices, not a guarantee of a storefront’s current price. It also announced prices of €39.99 / 149.99 zł for Standard and €59.99 / 199.99 zł for Deluxe in the other quoted markets.
