Treat the collection as a library to sample. Begin with a game that matches your favorite genre and the time you have, then try something different if you want to see how broad the collection is.
What to know before choosing
- UFO 50 contains 50 complete games, not a sequence of minigames. Its genres range from platformers, shooters and puzzles to roguelites and RPGs, and the games vary substantially in length. The Steam listing says, “All 50 games are available to play at the start!”
- There is no unlock order to preserve. You can leave a game and return to it later.
- The collection has a shared fictional setting: some entries are sequels, and characters recur across games. If continuity matters to you, try an earlier entry before a sequel such as Campanella 2, which the Steam listing identifies as a sequel to Campanella.
- Half of the collection features local co-op or versus play, according to the Steam listing. Look for a multiplayer option if you are choosing something to play with another person.
Choose by the kind of session you want
| What you want | Where to start | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| A straightforward arcade-style action game | Seaside Drive | The Steam listing describes it as a straightforward arcade-style action game. |
| A longer adventure | Grimstone | The listing describes it as a full JRPG that may take many hours, so it suits players ready for a substantial commitment. |
| A game to try with others | Pingolf | The listing describes it as a golf-and-pinball multiplayer game. |
| A familiar genre | Browse for a genre you already enjoy: platforming, puzzles, shooters, RPGs, strategy, sports or action. | Genre is a practical starting filter, though the official listing does not rank games by newcomer suitability. |
| Connected world and recurring characters | Look for related entries and play an earlier game before its sequel when you prefer that context. | The collection has recurring characters and sequels, but it does not require a prescribed sequence. |
These are ways to narrow the choice, not a ranking. The official materials do not identify a universally best first game or compare which entries are easiest for newcomers.

A simple first-session plan
- Browse the game descriptions and choose a short session in a genre you already like.
- Try a contrasting genre next—for example, move from arcade action to a puzzle or strategy game—to get a feel for the collection’s range.
- If you are playing with someone else, choose a title marked for local multiplayer and decide whether you want co-op or versus play.
- Give an unfamiliar game a little time to show you its rules. If it is not clicking, switch to another; you can revisit it whenever you like.
Think of the collection less as a campaign with a correct first chapter and more as a set of experiments in 8-bit game design. GamesRadar reported designer Derek Yu describing UFO 50 as “an open-world game in its own right,” referring to the experience of exploring the library: GamesRadar’s report.
