Start by watching an enemy, then choose a defense, save enough of your resource to use it, and attack only when a real opening appears. Repeat that loop rather than rushing to find a “best” build. Soulslike combat varies from game to game: Elden Ring is a useful example of stamina, dodging and guarding, while Sekiro emphasizes timed deflections and posture.
Use a repeatable combat loop
Treat each exchange as a short decision cycle: track the enemy, read its attack, defend in a way that suits the game, take a measured punish, then reassess. The details differ by title, so learn the rules of the game you are playing instead of assuming every Soulslike works like Elden Ring.

- Lock on when it helps. Lock-on can improve aim and keep a single opponent in view. Turn it off or reconsider it when several enemies are involved or it makes movement awkward. PlayStation’s Elden Ring beginner guide recommends using lock-on to help aim.
- Watch before committing. Notice an enemy’s wind-up, attack range and recovery. In Elden Ring, attacks and other actions commit your character for a time; pressing dodge repeatedly can queue another roll and carry you into danger. Bandai Namco’s combat guide explains these commitments.
- Keep a defensive response available. In Elden Ring, stamina is spent on attacks, blocks, sprinting and rolls. Holding a shield slows stamina recovery, and an empty bar can leave you unable to block or dodge when needed. Avoid spending the whole bar on an attack sequence or sprint. Bandai Namco’s gameplay guide and PlayStation’s beginner guide describe stamina use.
- Match the defense to the attack. Elden Ring supports dodging, guarding with a shield and parrying. Dodges have invulnerability frames, while blocking still costs stamina and can fail if the bar is depleted. Parrying depends on precise timing, so treat it as an optional skill to practice—not a prerequisite for starting. Bandai Namco’s combat guide covers these options.
- Punish once the opening is real. Wait until an attack or combo has ended and the enemy is recovering. Use a manageable attack, then be ready to defend again rather than automatically extending the sequence. Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring guide puts it plainly: “Patience is key in ELDEN RING.”
- Reassess after each exchange. If you were hit, identify whether the cause was range, timing, stamina or an overlong attack commitment. Change one thing in the next attempt so you can tell whether it helped.
Learn the combat model your game uses
Two games described as Soulslike can reward different defenses and rhythms. Compare them by the timing of defense, the resource pressure, the length of safe punish windows and how freely you can choose your next challenge.
| Question | Elden Ring example | Sekiro example |
|---|---|---|
| What defense should you learn? | Dodge, guard or parry; timing depends on the incoming attack. | Timed deflection is central to the combat guidance. |
| What resource or pressure matters? | Stamina pays for attacks, blocks, sprinting and rolls. | Attacks and deflections pressure enemy posture; breaking posture creates a deathblow opportunity. |
| What is the punish rhythm? | Look for an opening after an attack or combo and avoid overcommitting. | Use attacks and timed deflections to pressure posture, then capitalize when it breaks. |
| Can you change the order of challenges? | Its open world allows exploration and returning later; summons or equipment can also change an encounter. | The cited guide explains combat mechanics, not an equivalent open-world progression option. |
The Sekiro mechanics above come from Activision’s Sekiro guide, published March 22, 2019. These are examples, not a complete definition of the genre: follow the tutorial and in-game explanations for the title in front of you.

Choose a build that supports practice, not a supposed perfect answer
There is no single beginner build that suits every player or every game. In Elden Ring, PlayStation describes heavier, more resilient power builds, evasive speed builds and ranged magic builds; starting attributes suggest a direction but do not lock you into it. Choose a weapon or style you want to learn, then make sure your character can survive mistakes and move comfortably.
- Vigor governs health in Elden Ring, so it contributes to surviving errors while learning.
- Endurance affects stamina and equipment load in Elden Ring. Your load affects whether your chosen gear supports the movement style you want.
- Weapon choice should give you an attack rhythm you can recognize and recover from. A slower, heavier weapon and a quicker weapon create different commitments; learn the one you choose rather than chasing a universal recommendation.
These attribute details are specific to Elden Ring, as described in Bandai Namco’s gameplay guide. Other games use different systems and may not offer comparable stats.

When a fight is not working, change the problem
Repeatedly trying the same approach is not the only way forward. First separate a timing problem from a progression problem: if you can read the enemy but your attacks barely matter or one mistake ends the attempt, consider whether you are under-equipped or have another route available.
- In Elden Ring, explore elsewhere, gain levels, look for equipment, summon help if desired, or return later. The game allows players to change the order of many challenges.
- PlayStation’s beginner advice also recommends retreating from a difficult encounter and returning with more skill, levels or equipment.
- Do not assume every action game offers the same flexibility. A more linear game may require you to learn the encounter where you are rather than find another route.
Bandai Namco’s comparison of Elden Ring and the Souls series discusses adapting to bosses, exploration, summons and gear. The broader point is practical: if the game provides alternatives, use them; if it does not, focus practice on the move or resource that is breaking your attempts.

A useful practice session
- Enter an encounter with a simple goal: observe one attack pattern without trying to win immediately.
- On the next attempt, test one defense against that attack—dodge, block or, if the game supports it and you want to practice, a timed parry or deflection.
- Watch your resource bar and stop attacking early enough to respond to the next move.
- When the enemy recovers, land a short punish and return to defense.
- After a failure, change one decision: timing, distance, defense, attack length or progression route.
This is a practice method, not a claim that every game has the same stamina system or punish window. In particular, Sekiro’s posture-centered deflection model should not be played as though it were simply Elden Ring with different characters.
