How to Get Started in Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Combat, Blades, and Exploration

Start Xenoblade Chronicles 2 with a clear guide to auto-attacks, Arts, Specials, Blade switching, targeting, exploration, and edition differences.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by learning one combat rhythm: stay within range, let auto-attacks land, use the Arts they charge, then use Blade Specials as they become available. Drivers do the fighting; their Blades provide weapons and abilities. Once that sequence feels clear, practice switching Blades and directing your party toward one target. Between battles, explore the towns and regions spread across Alrest’s Titans, and use the in-game tutorials as new systems appear.

What kind of game is Xenoblade Chronicles 2?

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a role-playing game for Nintendo Switch set in Alrest, a world where civilizations live on the backs of Titans. The story follows Rex and Pyra as they search for Elysium. That premise gives the game two intertwined rhythms: a story-driven journey and exploration of varied environments, with battles along the way.

Nintendo’s overview describes the game as combining exploration and battling with a story-driven narrative. For a first-time player, the practical point is that exploration is not just travel between fights: towns, environments, and items have their own place in the game’s learning structure. You do not need to map out a perfect route before starting. Focus first on learning how to move through the places the story introduces and how to understand the information the game presents.

What should you learn first?

There are many systems, but you do not need to master them all at once. Learn the battle loop, understand what a Driver and Blade each contribute, and keep track of your target. Then take the next tutorial when the game introduces a new topic.

  1. Let the tutorial teach the system currently in front of you. Nintendo’s tutorial index groups lessons into battle, equipment and character growth, and field and town exploration and items. Use those categories as a mental checklist when a new feature appears. The index is not a complete English-language manual, so rely on the tutorial shown in your own game for exact instructions.
  2. Get comfortable with one Blade and the basic battle rhythm. Watch for auto-attacks to land, use the Arts available to you, and then use Specials as their charge levels become ready. The moves do not all begin an encounter ready to use.
  3. Pay attention to your target. A clear target makes it easier to see whether your attacks and party actions are focused where you expect. The game’s tutorials cover targeting; check the controls tutorial for the displayed controls in your edition and settings.
  4. Only then practise switching Blades. Switching changes the weapon and Arts available to the Driver. It is easier to notice what the change does after you understand the basic rhythm with the Blade you already have active.
  5. Explore between fights. Take time to notice the town or environment you have reached and to engage with the field, town, and item systems as they are introduced. The setting is broad, but you do not need an optimized route or a complete field-skill plan to begin.

How does combat work?

Combat builds in stages. A Driver is the character doing the physical fighting; a Blade supplies a weapon and abilities. A Driver can bond with multiple Blades, but only one is active in battle at a time. Changing the active Blade changes the weapon, Arts, and abilities available to that Driver.

The basic sequence

  1. Get within range and let auto-attacks land. Characters auto-attack when in range. The GameFAQs combat reference notes that standing still enables auto-attacks; moving around unnecessarily can interrupt the simple rhythm you are trying to learn.
  2. Use Arts when they are available. Landed auto-attacks build Arts, and Arts have their own cooldown progression. An Art may not be ready immediately after you use it, so look at what is available rather than expecting to repeat the same move continuously.
  3. Build toward Blade powers and Specials. Using Arts advances Blade powers, while Specials build through Arts. Specials have their own charge progression. Think of this as a sequence of opportunities rather than a single button press that should always be ready.
  4. Keep your attention on the target. The combat guide describes a command that directs the party to focus on the same target. Use the targeting lesson to find the relevant control in your version, and check that the party is attacking the enemy you intend.

This staged loop explains why a new player can feel as if the game is withholding moves at the start of a fight: the actions have to build toward later options. It also gives you a simple troubleshooting question. If a move is not available, check whether it is waiting on its cooldown or charge progression, rather than assuming you missed a secret requirement.

What to watch without overthinking

  • Range: If you are not in range, the auto-attacks that build Arts will not land as expected.
  • Availability: Arts and Specials progress differently. Look at the move that is ready instead of treating every ability as if it shared one timer.
  • Active Blade: The Blade currently active determines that Driver’s weapon and available Arts. Switching is a change in options, not merely a cosmetic change.
  • Target: A party focused on one target makes it easier to follow what your own actions are doing.

The GameFAQs combat reference was updated in 2021 and is useful as a secondary explanation of fundamentals such as standing still for auto-attacks, Arts cooldowns, and Specials building through Arts. Treat the in-game tutorial as the authority for the controls actually displayed in your edition and settings.

A simple way to diagnose a confusing fight

If a battle feels busy, resist the urge to change every setting or switch Blades repeatedly. Check the basic sequence one step at a time. First, confirm that you are close enough for auto-attacks to land. Next, look at which Arts are ready and use one when it is available. Then watch how that action contributes to the next stage of your Blade’s power. Finally, verify that the party is still concentrating on the target you meant to choose. This turns a crowded encounter into a few readable questions about range, readiness, Blade, and target.

If one of those pieces is unclear, return to the relevant tutorial rather than trying to memorize every combat explanation at once. Battle, equipment and character growth, and field exploration are separate tutorial categories. Treating them as separate lessons helps you build understanding gradually, instead of expecting one tutorial or one encounter to explain the entire game.

What should you know about Drivers and Blades?

It helps to think of a Driver as the fighter and a Blade as a partner who brings a weapon and abilities. The distinction matters because choosing or switching a Blade changes the Driver’s combat options. You are not choosing between two characters who perform the same job; you are changing the weapon and Arts available to the Driver who has that Blade active.

Drivers can bond with multiple Blades, but only one is active for a Driver in battle at a time. Switching lets you use a different Blade’s weapon and Arts. For a beginner, that is enough to understand the first decision: try the options the story gives you, notice how they change your available moves, and avoid getting stuck trying to build an ideal roster before you understand the basics.

Build with the Blades you have

You do not need to obtain a particular rare Blade to learn how combat works. A first-timer walkthrough from GameFAQs explicitly aims to help players progress without hours of unnecessary grinding and says its strategies do not depend on rare Blades. Use the Blades already available to you to practise the combat loop. When you receive another Blade, compare its practical effect in battle: it changes the weapon and Arts you can use while active.

That approach also prevents a common distraction: treating roster optimization as a prerequisite for understanding the game. First learn what your current Blade’s Arts do in the flow of a fight. Later choices will be easier to judge once you can connect a weapon and its Arts to the combat rhythm you have already learned.

What is worth comparing when you switch?

Keep the comparison concrete. Notice which weapon the active Blade gives the Driver and which Arts become available. Then use those Arts in the same basic battle rhythm you already know: let auto-attacks land, use an available Art, and watch the progression toward Blade powers or Specials. Switching is useful to understand because it changes your options; it is not a demand to keep cycling through every Blade in every encounter.

At the beginning, there is no need to rank Blades by an assumed endgame standard or to delay playing until you have a rare one. The beginner walkthrough’s stated aim is to help players progress without hours of unnecessary grinding, and its strategies do not hinge on rare Blades. That is a practical reassurance: use the tools available to you and let the game introduce additional systems and choices as you proceed.

How should you handle targeting and controls?

Target selection is worth learning early because it helps you make sense of the party’s actions. The beginner walkthrough documents basic target selection and luring controls, while the combat reference describes directing the party to attack the same target. The exact button labels are not reproduced here because controls can depend on the player’s edition and settings.

  1. Open or replay the in-game controls tutorial when targeting is introduced.
  2. Use the target-selection control shown there to choose an enemy.
  3. Look for the party-focus command described in the combat tutorial or reference, and use the in-game display to confirm its control.
  4. During the fight, watch whether the party is acting against the selected target before changing tactics.

If your controls do not match a guide or a remembered button, do not assume the game is behaving incorrectly. Check the displayed tutorial for your own setup. This is especially useful if you are returning after a long break: relearning the target and party commands can make the rest of the battle easier to follow.

The walkthrough also mentions luring controls, but the essential beginner lesson is simply to learn the target and party commands that the game presents. No particular button sequence needs to be memorized from a reference written for another player’s setup. Make a point of checking the on-screen lesson when the game first teaches targeting, and revisit it if you return after time away or change your settings.

Why explore Alrest between battles?

Alrest is made up of lands developed across Titans, with distinct environments and civilizations. Nintendo’s tutorial index treats field and town exploration and items as a dedicated learning category, alongside battle and character-growth topics. That structure is a signal to take the places you visit seriously: exploration has its own systems, not just a route to the next encounter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a first outing, explore at a comfortable pace. Notice the town or region around you, pay attention when the game introduces a field or item interaction, and use the associated tutorial. There is no need to chase every possible route or plan around an assumed field-skill gate based on this introductory guidance. Exact map routes, hidden-item locations, and chapter-specific requirements are not established here, so treat the game’s own prompts as your guide to what is relevant in the area you are currently visiting.

That gives exploration a useful beginner rhythm of its own: arrive somewhere new, look at the environment and town, and pay attention to any field, item, or interaction lesson the game surfaces. You do not need a checklist of every possible discovery before you can enjoy a region. The setting is built around distinct places and civilizations on Titans, so taking in where the story has brought you is part of the experience even when you are not in a fight.

Which version or purchase should a new player check?

Nintendo’s UK listing gives the original Nintendo Switch release date as 1 December 2017 and also lists a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo Support says the Switch 2 Edition became playable on 30 July 2026 and lists its compatibility in the version 3.0.0 notes. According to Nintendo’s listing, the Switch 2 Edition offers smoother frame rates, TV-mode 4K support when used with a compatible TV, and additional features. The 4K statement is specifically about TV mode and requires a compatible TV; it is not a promise that every display or mode runs at 4K.

What to check What the listing establishes What it means for a beginner
Original Nintendo Switch game Nintendo’s UK listing dates the release to 1 December 2017. Confirm that the product is the main game, not a separate story or add-on.
Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Nintendo lists smoother frame rates, TV-mode 4K support with a compatible TV, and additional features. Support records it as playable from 30 July 2026. Check that the listing is the Switch 2 Edition if you specifically want those edition features.
Torna: The Golden Country Nintendo lists Torna as an Expansion Pass story or a standalone retail version; the standalone version does not include the main game. Do not mistake Torna for the base game. It is a separate story, and the standalone release does not give you the main game.
Expansion Pass or DLC Nintendo lists Torna as an Expansion Pass story; the game listing distinguishes it from the main game. Check what is included in the exact edition or bundle you are considering instead of assuming the base game includes the Expansion Pass.

Nintendo’s original Switch update notes state that version 3.0.0 made no changes for the original Switch game, while its Support notes identify Switch 2 Edition compatibility in that version’s notes. Check Nintendo’s current support information for version-specific details, since update and compatibility information can change. Prices, stock, and the contents of an individual retailer’s bundle are not established here; verify those on the current listing before buying.

A quick purchase checklist

Before buying, check four separate things rather than relying on a short product title. First, make sure the platform is the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 version you intend to play. Second, confirm whether the item is the main game or Torna: The Golden Country. Third, inspect whether the listing includes the Expansion Pass or other DLC rather than assuming that extra content comes with the base game. Fourth, if Switch 2 Edition features matter to you, confirm that the listing names that edition; TV-mode 4K is relevant only if you also have a compatible TV.

Nintendo lists Torna: The Golden Country both as an Expansion Pass story and as a standalone retail version, but the standalone Torna release does not include the main game. Treat it as a separate purchase and story, not as another name for the base Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Since prices, stock, and retailer bundle contents can change, check the current listing for exactly what it includes rather than relying on an old price or an abbreviated bundle description.

What can wait until later?

When you are just starting, resist turning every system into a build problem. You can learn a lot by observing the consequences of a few simple actions: standing in range, letting attacks land, using an available Art, seeing a Special charge, and trying another active Blade. Those observations are more useful than chasing an unverified optimal setup.

  • You do not need a rare Blade as a condition for learning the combat loop.
  • You do not need a detailed route or hidden-item map to begin exploring the Titans.
  • You do not need to assume that a field skill is required in a specific place unless the game introduces that requirement.
  • You do not need to memorize button labels from another player’s setup; use your own in-game controls tutorial.

For a returning player, the same order works as a quick refresher: review battle controls, practise the auto-attack-to-Arts-to-Special sequence, check how to focus the party on a target, then revisit exploration and item prompts when they appear.
