Getting started in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is easier when you treat progression as a flexible loop: explore with the right navigation tool, collect gear and Books of Knowledge at their locations, then spend progression-earned skill points on the approach you enjoy. Skills and Abilities are different systems, ordinary enemy looting is not the main way to find new equipment, and there is no universally required skill branch. Ubisoft’s beginner guidance, published November 9, 2020, describes skill focus as resettable without in-game currency, so you can experiment rather than trying to guess a perfect build before you understand your preferences.
Start with the core progression loop
Valhalla’s early progression is not just a matter of defeating enemies and taking whatever they drop. It asks you to explore the world, locate specific rewards and knowledge, develop Eivor through the Skill Tree, and grow your settlement. Each part serves a different purpose: exploration reveals opportunities, gear changes your equipment, Abilities add distinct combat options, skill points shape your character, and settlement construction opens more of the game’s activities and systems.

A useful routine is to follow nearby points of interest, use the tool suited to the search, collect what you find, and then decide whether a new skill or piece of equipment supports the way you want to play. You do not need to settle on a permanent build at the outset. Ubisoft says you can reset skill focus without spending in-game currency, making early experimentation a practical way to learn what feels useful.
- Use Synin to spot points of interest from above.
- Use the compass to orient yourself toward important upgrades and Books of Knowledge.
- Use Odin Sight when searching an area for items and secrets.
- Spend skill points in the Skill Tree to shape stats and Power Level as well as unlock skills.
- Look for equipment at its location rather than expecting ordinary enemies to supply new weapons and armor.
These tools complement one another. Synin is useful for noticing destinations; the compass helps you navigate toward important targets; Odin Sight helps with a more focused search once you are in an area. Switching between them according to the task is more effective than treating any one of them as a universal scanner.

Skills and Abilities are separate systems
The distinction between a Skill Tree skill and an Ability is one of the most useful things to understand early. Skills are unlocked by spending points earned through progression. Abilities are discovered or upgraded through Books of Knowledge found in the world. They are not two names for the same kind of unlock, and looking for a Book of Knowledge when you mean to spend a skill point—or searching the Skill Tree for a new Ability—can send you in the wrong direction.
| System | How it is acquired | What it does | How to approach it early |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skill Tree skills | Earn progression points and spend them in the Skill Tree. | Unlock skills and improve stats and Power Level. | Choose skills that suit your preferred approach; skill focus can be reset without in-game currency, according to Ubisoft. |
| Abilities | Find Books of Knowledge in the world; books can grant a new Ability or upgrade an existing one. | Provide melee or ranged moves that consume adrenaline. | Read what a move does and use it deliberately, rather than treating it as a passive skill. |
How to choose Skill Tree skills without chasing a “best” build
Spend skill points with a purpose, but do not assume there is one correct branch for every player. Ubisoft describes the Skill Tree as a way to improve stats and Power Level while unlocking skills. Its guidance also frames the paths as choices rather than a universal ranking. The best beginner decision is therefore a personal one: identify what you want to improve, select a skill that fits, and reassess as you gain experience.
Use your current friction as a guide
Instead of following a supposed mandatory order, notice what is making a particular encounter or activity difficult or less enjoyable. If your preferred approach would benefit from a skill, spend a point toward that option. This is a decision framework, not a claim that a particular branch or node is objectively strongest. The available official guidance does not establish a universal optimal skill order or a best beginner build.
Experiment, then adjust
Because Ubisoft says skill focus can be reset without in-game currency, an early point is not a reason to fear permanent commitment. Try a direction, see whether the unlocked skills match your habits, and change focus if you would rather prioritize something else. The reset option supports exploration; it does not mean every choice has equal value for every player, or that a reset is required.

Keep Power Level in perspective
The Skill Tree also contributes to stats and Power Level, so progression points have a broader role than unlocking an isolated perk. Consider the whole decision: a skill may be appealing for what it does, while spending points also participates in character progression. The official advice establishes that relationship but does not provide a point-by-point route, threshold, or required early sequence. Avoid treating an unsourced build order as a rule.
Find Abilities through Books of Knowledge
Books of Knowledge are the world-based route to Abilities. Finding one can grant a new melee or ranged Ability, or upgrade an Ability you already have. That makes exploration relevant to combat development in a different way from earning a Skill Tree point: a book is a specific discovery, not a point to spend wherever you choose.
- Watch for the compass to point toward Books of Knowledge and important upgrades. Treat it as a navigation aid for notable targets rather than as a substitute for searching every location.
- Use Synin to spot points of interest. This helps you identify places worth investigating as you travel.
- Search the area with Odin Sight. Ubisoft identifies Odin Sight as a way to look for items and secrets once you are exploring an area.
- Check what the book grants. It may teach a new melee or ranged move, or improve an Ability you have already found.
- Use the Ability deliberately. Abilities consume adrenaline, so learn the move’s function and choose an appropriate moment instead of activating it without regard to its cost.
This process also helps clarify why the navigation tools should not be conflated. The compass can point you toward a Book of Knowledge; Synin can help you notice a point of interest; Odin Sight helps search locally. Their jobs overlap in the broad sense that all aid exploration, but the specific roles Ubisoft assigns them are different.

Do not build your early equipment plan around ordinary enemy drops. Ubisoft’s beginner tips say gear is found at specific locations. Legendary items, quest rewards, and merchants are additional sources. In practical terms, the question is often where to explore or what reward to pursue—not which routine enemy to farm for a new weapon or armor piece.

| Source | What the official guidance establishes | Useful beginner approach |
|---|---|---|
| Specific locations | Gear is found at designated locations. | Use navigation tools to identify and search points of interest instead of relying on random enemy looting. |
| Legendary items | Ubisoft lists legendary items as an additional gear source. | Keep them in mind as a category of reward; the beginner guidance does not rank a particular item as the best early choice. |
| Quest rewards | Quests can provide gear. | Consider rewards as part of your progression, not only as a reason to seek equipment through exploration. |
| Merchants | Merchants are another source of gear. | Check merchant offerings when relevant, while avoiding assumptions about stock or availability not established by the guidance. |
| Ordinary enemy loot | It is not presented as the usual source of new weapons and armor. | Do not expect routine combat looting to replace searching for gear locations or pursuing other documented sources. |
There is no documented single best early weapon or armor set in the official beginner material. That means it would be misleading to prescribe one item as mandatory or to invent a ranking. Make equipment decisions from what you actually find and the way you prefer to play. Ubisoft’s skill-path guidance mentions gear aligned with the Wolf path, but that is not evidence that Wolf-aligned equipment is best for every player or that a specific set is the correct starting target.
Think about investment, not just acquisition
Finding an item answers what is available; it does not by itself answer whether it deserves your attention. Compare discovered gear with what you currently use and whether it suits your approach. The official material supports gear acquisition and the existence of skill-path alignment, but it does not provide a beginner ranking by weapon type, item location, or upgrade investment. Avoid spending effort based on an alleged “best-in-slot” list unless it is supported for the relevant game version and your own needs.
Use exploration tools for different jobs
Valhalla gives you three named tools in Ubisoft’s beginner guidance, each useful at a different stage of finding something. Building the habit of choosing the right one makes exploration more intentional.
- Synin: use the raven to spot points of interest. It is suited to looking outward and identifying places to investigate.
- Compass: use it to orient toward important upgrades and Books of Knowledge. It helps direct travel toward notable progression targets.
- Odin Sight: use it to search an area for items and secrets. It is suited to local investigation when you have arrived somewhere worth examining.
A practical sequence is to notice a possible destination with Synin, orient yourself toward a relevant target with the compass, then search the area with Odin Sight. This is an application of the documented roles, not a required sequence for every excursion. If you are not searching for nearby objects or secrets, Odin Sight may not be the tool you need at that moment; if you already know where you are going, the compass may be more useful than scouting again.

Why settlement growth belongs in your early plans
Settlement construction is more than a cosmetic side activity. Ubisoft says developing the settlement opens narrative arcs, missions, activities, bonuses, and mechanics. That breadth makes settlement growth relevant to the overall progression loop: it can provide access to more kinds of content, not just another isolated reward.
Give settlement development a place in your broader progression rather than postponing it indefinitely while focusing only on combat skills and equipment. At the same time, there is no established definitive first-building or upgrade order in the cited official guidance. Choose what to construct based on the options and needs you encounter in your game, but do not mistake a community-preferred sequence for an official requirement.
Ubisoft News’ guide, Everything You Need to Master Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, published November 11, 2020, also points players toward official weapons, skills, and gameplay guides and mentions settlement building. That supports treating the settlement as one part of a connected progression experience, without claiming that a specific construction sequence is optimal.

- Orient toward a meaningful target. Consult the compass for important upgrades or Books of Knowledge.
- Search when you arrive. Use Odin Sight to look for items and secrets in the area.
- Distinguish the reward type. A Book of Knowledge grants or upgrades an Ability; a Skill Tree point is spent on a skill and contributes to stats and Power Level.
- Spend skill points according to preference. Pick an option that suits your approach, knowing that Ubisoft says skill focus can be reset without in-game currency.
- Pay attention to equipment sources. Look for gear at specific locations and consider legendary items, quest rewards, and merchants rather than expecting ordinary enemies to supply new weapons and armor.
- Use Abilities with their cost in mind. They consume adrenaline, so understand each move and choose when to use it.
- Include the settlement in progression. Construction opens narrative arcs, missions, activities, bonuses, and mechanics; choose among available options without assuming a universal first upgrade.
The checklist is deliberately flexible. It keeps discovery, character development, equipment, combat options, and settlement growth in view without assigning an unsupported priority between specific skills, weapons, or buildings.
What to avoid when following beginner advice
- Do not confuse skills with Abilities. Skills come from spending progression-earned points; Books of Knowledge grant or upgrade Abilities.
- Do not assume one skill path is universally best. Ubisoft supports experimentation and a resettable skill focus, not a single mandatory beginner build.
- Do not expect routine enemy loot to be your gear pipeline. The official guidance emphasizes specific gear locations and also names legendary items, quest rewards, and merchants.
- Do not treat Abilities as free passive effects. They consume adrenaline, so their use is a decision.
- Do not search with the wrong tool by habit. Synin, the compass, and Odin Sight have distinct navigation and search roles.
- Do not assume a fixed settlement order. Settlement development matters, but the official guidance does not establish a definitive sequence.
- Do not treat older beginner advice as a patch-specific build guide. Ubisoft’s cited gameplay tips are from November 2020 and explain the core systems; they do not establish current balance rankings or a current optimal setup.
Edition and platform context if you are buying the game
This guide is about getting started in the game, not choosing a purchase edition. If you have not bought it yet, Ubisoft Help’s support page updated September 30, 2026 lists Standard, Deluxe, Ragnarök, Complete, Collector, and Ubisoft+ Premium editions and warns that contents can vary by region. Check the edition details for your platform and region before relying on a general list of included content. The support page also treats supported peripherals as platform-specific, so verify compatibility for your own platform rather than assuming one platform’s information applies to another.
The available official edition information does not establish live store stock or a universal price, and edition contents may vary by region. For an existing player, none of those purchase distinctions changes the core advice above about skills, Books of Knowledge, gear sources, navigation, or settlement development.

The core beginner concepts covered here come from Ubisoft guidance published in November 2020. They are useful for understanding how the systems are organized, but they should not be read as a patch-specific ranking of skills, weapons, armor, or settlement choices. The official material described here does not establish an optimal point-by-point skill order, a single best early weapon, or an exact settlement construction sequence. Treat claims about those rankings cautiously unless they identify the relevant version and provide evidence for the specific recommendation.
For a new or returning player, the dependable method is to use the documented systems on their own terms: find items and Books of Knowledge through exploration, spend points to shape your skills, use Abilities with adrenaline in mind, and develop the settlement for the additional content and mechanics it opens. That gives you structure without pretending that every player should progress identically.
