To free up space on a Samsung Galaxy tablet, first check Settings > Battery and device care > Storage (or Settings > Device care > Storage on some versions). Review what is taking room, then delete only files you recognize and no longer need. If your exact tablet model supports a microSD card, you can move or copy files to it in My Files—but Samsung Android devices do not treat a card as internal storage for apps.
The safest approach is to inspect first, decide whether files can be deleted or should be preserved elsewhere, and then check Storage again. Menu names, card-slot support, and card requirements vary by model, so confirm your tablet’s specifications before buying storage or following a path that may not match its software.

Start by checking what is using storage
Don’t begin by deleting files at random. The Storage screen in Samsung’s built-in Device care tools groups the tablet’s data into categories, so you can see where the space is going and choose a cleanup that fits. The labels and layout vary by model and software version; Samsung’s current guidance may call the section Battery and device care, while some devices show Device care.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery and device care or Device care, depending on what appears on your tablet.
- Tap Storage.
- Review the categories and identify the ones that account for the space you want to recover.
If you do not see either Device care label, don’t assume your tablet lacks storage controls. Samsung cautions that menu availability and presentation vary across models and software versions. Look through Settings for the storage or device-care area available on your software, or consult the instructions for your exact model.

Use the category view to choose a target
The categories are a way to inspect what is stored, not a direction to erase everything in a category. Use them to find files you can identify—such as old downloads, large media you have already backed up, or duplicates you no longer want. Work one category at a time so that you can tell what you are removing and avoid losing something important.
Samsung’s Device care guidance describes reviewing unnecessary files and selecting items for deletion. It does not establish a guaranteed amount of space that any tablet will recover: the result depends on what is actually stored on that device and what you choose to remove.
When checking the categories, distinguish files you manage from data whose purpose is unclear. A large item is not automatically safe to erase. The category view helps you focus your review, but you still need to identify an item before deciding whether to keep, move, or delete it. If the screen’s labels differ from the examples here, follow the wording on your tablet rather than assuming that every Galaxy model presents storage in the same way.
Delete files carefully with the built-in tools
Once you have found a category worth checking, inspect the individual items before deleting them. Samsung’s guidance supports reviewing files by category and selecting specific items to delete. The safest rule is simple: remove only content you recognize, have no further use for, or have safely copied elsewhere.
A careful cleanup sequence
- In the Storage view, open a category that appears to contain removable content.
- Review the listed files or items. Check names and, where shown, file details so you can distinguish old or unwanted content from something you still need.
- Select only the items you intend to remove.
- Confirm deletion when prompted, then return to Storage and review the updated category view.
- Repeat with another category only if you still need more room.
Start with content you can readily replace or have already saved elsewhere. For example, an old downloaded file may be a sensible candidate if you know what it is and no longer need it. A photo or video may be worth moving to a supported SD card or another backup location before deletion if you want to keep it.
Take a moment to check whether a file is the only copy you have. If you want to keep it, transfer or back it up first, and then verify that the new copy is accessible. If you only want to remove an item, select that item rather than an entire category. When the tablet offers a confirmation step, read it before proceeding; do not treat the confirmation as a routine prompt to tap through.
Do not clear unfamiliar app data as a shortcut
Clearing an app’s data is different from deleting a file you recognize. It can remove locally stored app content or reset information you rely on. The storage guidance here does not establish that indiscriminately clearing app data is safe, so don’t use it as a blanket cleanup step. If a specific app is taking substantial room, first determine what its stored data contains and whether the app provides a safe way to remove or export it.

Likewise, do not delete unfamiliar system files just because they appear large. The goal is to free space without disrupting the tablet or losing personal content. When you cannot identify an item, leave it alone until you can verify what it does.
Samsung’s instructions focus on reviewing and selecting files in the storage categories. They do not make a case for installing paid cleanup software, nor do they establish that a cleaner app is needed to perform this basic storage review. Start with the built-in Settings and My Files tools; avoid granting an unfamiliar app access to files simply because you want a quick way to reclaim space.
Move photos, videos, and other files to microSD when supported
A microSD card can provide another place to keep files, but not every Galaxy tablet has a card slot. Check the specifications or manual for your exact model before buying or inserting a card. Samsung also states that Android devices from Samsung do not support Adoptable storage. In practical terms, a card is removable file storage: it does not become internal storage for installing apps.
Before choosing a card, verify that your model has a slot and check the model documentation for supported capacity and card-type or speed requirements. Samsung’s support instructions do not establish one capacity or speed recommendation for all Galaxy tablets. Comparing cards only makes sense after you know what the tablet supports and whether your goal is storing files you manage or making an external backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMove or copy files in My Files
- Insert a compatible microSD card into the tablet, if your model supports one.
- Open My Files.
- Browse to the files you want to transfer and select them.
- Tap Move to relocate the selected files, or Copy to keep a second copy on the card.
- Navigate to the SD card and choose the destination folder.
- Tap Move here or Copy here to complete the operation.
The SD card appears as a destination only when one is inserted and recognized by the tablet. If you do not see it, check that the card is seated and that your model supports microSD; the card option is not a universal feature across Galaxy tablets.
For a first transfer, consider moving or copying a small group of files you can recognize, then check the destination in My Files. This lets you confirm that you selected the right source and folder before repeating the operation with more items. Keep the destination organized in a folder you can find again, especially if you plan to use the card as a place for media or other personal files.
Choose Move or Copy based on what you need
- Move transfers the selected files to the card. Use it when you intend to keep the files on the card rather than in the tablet’s internal storage.
- Copy leaves the originals in place and creates copies on the card. It can be useful as a transfer or backup step, but making a copy alone does not clear the space occupied by the original files.
If you copied files as a backup and want the internal space back, verify that the copies are present in the intended SD-card folder before deleting the original files. If you moved them, check the destination before relying on the transfer. This simple check helps prevent an accidental loss from a mistaken selection or destination.

- Versatile and Durable: This microSD card is designed to withstand everyday wear and tear, offering waterproof, shockproof, and temperature-proof protection for reliable performance.
These two choices serve different purposes. Copy is the cautious choice when you want to preserve the original while checking a backup; Move is the direct choice when you intend to relocate files. Neither choice guarantees a particular amount of recovered space. The space reclaimed depends on the files actually transferred and whether their internal originals remain on the tablet.

A supported card can hold user-managed files that you move or copy through My Files. Samsung explicitly says its Android devices do not support Adoptable storage, so don’t expect a card to merge with internal storage or act as a general extension for app installation. The available card slot, supported capacity, and card requirements depend on the tablet model; the cited Samsung guidance does not establish one capacity or speed recommendation for every device.
That distinction matters if your main problem is app installation space. A microSD card may give you a destination for files such as photos, videos, or other items you manage in My Files, but it is not a substitute for internal app storage under Samsung’s stated Android limitation. Check the Storage categories and remove only recognized, unnecessary content if you need to make room internally.
Use USB-C external storage for a backup or transfer when compatible
Samsung’s Maintenance mode guidance identifies USB storage connected to the tablet’s USB-C port as an external backup method, alongside a microSD card installed in the device. This is a backup-oriented option, not proof that every USB storage device works with every tablet, and not a way to expand internal app storage.
If you are considering USB-C storage, verify compatibility for your tablet and the storage device before depending on it. Use it as a place to back up or transfer files, then confirm the files are accessible on the external storage before removing originals from the tablet. The Samsung guidance cited for this option is specifically about backup in Maintenance mode; it does not establish universal device compatibility.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Think of external USB storage and a microSD card as possible destinations for files, not as interchangeable upgrades that are guaranteed to work on every model. Samsung’s Maintenance mode instructions describe USB storage in a backup context; they do not promise that connecting any drive will increase the space available to install apps. If the goal is simply to keep a second copy, verify the backup before removing the tablet’s original files.
Choose the right cleanup method for your situation
| What you need | Best next step | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| You are not sure what is filling the tablet | Open Settings and review Storage under Battery and device care or Device care. | Menu names and presentation vary by model and software version. |
| You found files you no longer need | Inspect the relevant category, select recognized items, and delete them. | Do not erase unfamiliar system files or remove content before checking it. |
| You want to keep photos, videos, or other files but reduce internal use | Check whether your exact model supports microSD, then move files with My Files. | MicroSD support is model-dependent, and the card does not become internal app storage. |
| You want a duplicate copy before removing originals | Use Copy in My Files to save files to a supported SD card, or use compatible external storage for backup or transfer. | Copying alone does not free internal space; verify the copy before deleting the original. |
| You want more room for apps | Review the tablet’s Storage view and remove only recognized, unnecessary content. | Samsung Android devices do not support Adoptable storage, so do not expect microSD to function as internal app storage. |
For a storage product, first establish the exact model and its supported card slot, capacity, and card requirements. Then decide whether you need removable media storage for files or external storage for backup. There is no universal card specification or speed recommendation for every Galaxy tablet in Samsung’s guidance, so avoid choosing on a generic claim that a particular card will suit all models. A higher-capacity card is not useful if the tablet does not support that capacity.

If you cannot find the card or storage menu
The Storage menu has a different name or is missing
Samsung’s instructions cover more than one Settings label: some versions show Battery and device care, while others show Device care. The precise display can vary with software version and model. Check the available Device care section in Settings rather than relying on a single path as universal.
Samsung Canada’s Device Care guidance, updated June 3, 2026, likewise notes that features and presentation can vary by device and software. If the labels in the steps do not match your tablet, use its exact-model manual or support instructions rather than assuming a setting is missing or that another model’s path applies.

- Confirm that the tablet’s exact model supports a microSD card; support is not universal.
- Make sure a card is inserted. My Files shows the SD-card destination only when one is available to the tablet.
- Check the model’s specifications or manual for the card requirements. A universal capacity or speed recommendation is not established for all Galaxy tablets.
If those checks do not resolve it, don’t assume that a USB-C drive or another card will automatically provide the same capability. Compatibility depends on the tablet and storage device. Verify both before relying on an external destination for important files.
You moved files but did not recover the space you expected
Check the destination in My Files and confirm which operation you selected. Copy retains the originals, so the internal files still occupy space until you remove them. With Move, verify that the files reached the SD card before assuming the internal copies are gone. The amount recovered depends on the files selected, and Samsung does not promise a fixed result.
Return to the Storage view after a transfer or deletion to see what changed. If the category you checked still accounts for space, inspect it again rather than deleting a broader set of files. The result depends on the selected items; there is no guaranteed quantity of space to recover from a particular cleanup.
You still need more space after removing files
Return to Settings > Battery and device care or Device care > Storage and review the categories again. The updated view can help identify a different source of storage use. Continue only with content you can identify and safely remove or transfer; do not broaden cleanup to unfamiliar data simply to force a larger reduction.
Recommended Free Tools
If the remaining space use is in app data or another category you do not understand, pause before removing it. Determine what the stored content is and whether the relevant app offers a safe way to export or remove it. The goal is a deliberate cleanup, not simply making the displayed number smaller at the expense of data you need.

A safe order of operations
- Inspect: Check the Storage categories before choosing what to delete.
- Identify: Pick files you recognize and no longer need, rather than clearing broad groups blindly.
- Preserve: Move files you want to retain to microSD only if your model supports it, or back them up using a compatible external method.
- Verify: Check the destination before deleting a source copy, and remember that copying does not itself free space.
- Recheck: Return to Storage to see whether more cleanup is necessary.
This approach uses Samsung’s built-in Settings and My Files tools and avoids assuming that every Galaxy tablet has the same menus, card slot, or storage capabilities.
Samsung Gulf’s Galaxy phone and tablet space guidance, updated June 23, 2026, describes reviewing files and transferring them with My Files. Samsung US’s microSD support page spells out the key limitation: “Samsung Android devices do not support the Adoptable storage feature.” Those points reinforce the practical rule for Galaxy tablets: use the built-in tools, verify model support, and distinguish file storage from internal app storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check what is taking up space on my Samsung Galaxy tablet?
Open Settings and look for Battery and device care or Device care, then tap Storage. Review the categories shown on your tablet. Menu names and presentation vary by model and software version.
Can I use a microSD card as internal storage for apps?
No. Samsung states that its Android devices do not support Adoptable storage. A compatible card can hold files you move or copy with My Files, but it does not become internal app storage.
How do I move photos or videos to an SD card?
If your exact tablet model supports microSD, insert a compatible card, open My Files, select the files, tap Move or Copy, choose the SD card and destination folder, then tap Move here or Copy here. Check the destination afterward.
Why did copying files to an SD card not free up space?
Copy leaves the originals on the tablet, so they continue to occupy internal storage. Verify that the card copy is present before deleting the originals if you want to reclaim that space.
Why can’t I see an SD card in My Files?
The tablet may not support microSD, or no card may be inserted and recognized. Check your exact model’s specifications or manual and confirm the card is seated. Support is not universal across Galaxy tablets.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I connect USB-C storage to expand my tablet’s storage?
Samsung’s Maintenance mode instructions identify USB storage connected through USB-C as a backup method, but do not establish compatibility for every tablet or promise expansion of internal app storage. Verify compatibility and treat it as a backup or transfer destination.
How much space will I recover by deleting files or moving them?
There is no fixed amount. It depends on which files are stored on your tablet and which you select to delete or move. Check Storage again after cleanup to see the change.
The Bottom Line
Start in Settings > Battery and device care or Device care > Storage, identify files you recognize, and delete only what you no longer need. To keep files while reducing internal use, verify that your exact model supports microSD and use My Files to move them; remember that Samsung Android devices do not support Adoptable storage. Confirm backups and transfers before removing originals.
