How to Free Up SSD Space on a Windows Gaming Laptop Without Deleting Games

You can free space on a Windows gaming laptop without uninstalling games by first checking what is filling the drive, then reviewing Windows’ cleanup options, moving supported games through their launcher, or offloading personal files. Start with Settings > System > Storage rather than deleting folders by guesswork: the right fix depends on whether the space is being used by temporary files, apps, Windows system data, or personal files.

Use the methods in that order: measure first, review each cleanup choice, and only then decide whether a game or personal file should live somewhere else. Windows versions and game launchers can show different labels and controls, so follow the options available on your laptop rather than assuming every device has the same path. Built-in cleanup is free; external and internal storage require compatibility checks and may involve a hardware cost.

How to find what is taking up space

Open Settings > System > Storage. Windows groups space use into categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved. The names and layout can differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Storage settings gives you a better starting point than assuming games are responsible. Microsoft says this area can also show the drive’s type, capacity, and current usage. See Microsoft’s guide to Storage settings.

  1. Open Settings, choose System, then select Storage.
  2. Check which categories occupy the most space. Select a category to inspect its contents or available actions.
  3. For a quick capacity check, open File Explorer > This PC and look at the free space on the system drive, usually C:.
  4. Decide whether to clean files, move a game, or offload personal content based on what the figures show.

Windows may show estimated savings for cleanup categories. Treat those figures as estimates, not a promise: the space recovered depends on your files, Windows update state, and selected cleanup items. There is no reliable universal amount to expect.

#1 Best Overall
Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

This first check helps separate three different problems. If Installed apps dominates, a game library or another large app may be the place to investigate. If Temporary files is prominent, review the cleanup categories rather than searching the drive for folders to erase. If personal files account for much of the usage, moving or changing their local availability may be more appropriate than altering a game installation. System & reserved is a Windows category, not a prompt to delete system folders manually.

Keep a note of the free-space reading before you begin. After each major change, check This PC or return to Storage settings to see whether the available capacity changed. That makes it easier to tell which action helped and avoids doing several risky changes at once. The displayed category estimates and the free-space total may not update at exactly the same moment, so allow Windows to refresh before drawing conclusions.

Which Windows cleanup options are safe to use?

Use Windows’ review screens before removing anything. Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations can surface temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Review the items in each category and leave anything you may need. A suggested cleanup is not automatically the right choice for your personal files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Temporary files and cleanup recommendations

Open the category, read what Windows has selected, and check the listed files before confirming. In particular, deleting a previous Windows installation removes the option to roll back to that earlier version. If you may need that rollback, do not remove it. Microsoft’s Windows drive-space guide explains cleanup recommendations and this rollback consequence.

Large or unused files and unused apps deserve individual review. If a file is personal, make sure you know what it is and have a backup or another copy before deleting it. If an app is a game, do not remove it just because Windows lists it as unused; consider moving it through its launcher instead.

Think of the categories as choices with different consequences, not one all-or-nothing cleanup. Temporary items selected by Windows are different from a personal file in Downloads or an old Windows installation that you may want for rollback. Read the category name and the item list, and do not select a category just because its estimated savings look large. If you do not recognize an item or do not understand what removing it changes, leave it in place and investigate the relevant Windows or app guidance first.

Cleanup recommendations may include cloud-synced files. Before choosing such a suggestion, confirm whether it will remove a local copy, change availability, or delete something you still need; the relevant cloud service’s sync status matters. Similarly, an unused-app suggestion can include software you do not open often but still rely on. If the item is a game you want to keep, use launcher controls to check whether moving it is possible rather than treating removal as the only option.

Disk Cleanup on Windows 10

Microsoft also documents Disk Cleanup as a Windows 10 option for removing temporary and system files. Review the description and checkbox for every category before confirming, especially if you are unsure whether a category contains files you still need. Windows versions and available labels can vary, so use the descriptions shown on your laptop rather than following a checkbox list blindly.

Do not treat Disk Cleanup as a different license to remove files without review. It is another built-in way to inspect cleanup options; the same rule applies: understand the checkbox and its consequences first. If the interface on your PC differs from a guide, do not guess at an equivalent option. Windows labels and available tools can change between versions.

How to configure Storage Sense without losing files

Storage Sense can automatically remove selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents when configured. It works on the system drive, usually C:. It does not manage Downloads or cloud content by default, so do not assume that turning it on will clean those locations. Review its retention choices before enabling automatic cleanup; Microsoft’s Storage Sense instructions describe its settings and defaults.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Storage and open Storage Sense. The wording or placement may differ by Windows version.
  2. Review the choices for temporary files and Recycle Bin items. Set only the cleanup behavior you want Windows to manage.
  3. Check any retention period or schedule shown before enabling automatic runs.
  4. Leave Downloads and cloud-file options alone unless you understand which files they affect and have checked that the files are safe to remove or make online-only.

Storage Sense is useful for ongoing maintenance, but it is not a substitute for reviewing important folders. Its controls do not mean that Windows will automatically choose every deletion you would choose yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a cautious setup, start with only the categories and retention behavior you are comfortable having handled automatically. A Recycle Bin retention choice affects how long deleted items remain there; do not shorten it without considering whether you use the bin to recover files. Temporary-file cleanup is likewise a selected setting, not a reason to assume that every temporary-looking folder elsewhere on the drive is safe to erase manually.

Because Storage Sense acts on the system drive, usually C:, it is not a general cleanup controller for every attached drive. If games are on a second internal or external drive, inspect that drive and its launcher library separately. Also remember that Downloads and cloud content are not managed by default. Enabling Storage Sense alone therefore may not affect the largest source of space use on your laptop.

How to move a game instead of uninstalling it

When a launcher offers a move function, use it rather than cutting and pasting game folders in File Explorer. The launcher can update its library location and verify the installation. Before moving a game, confirm the destination drive has enough free capacity and will be available whenever you want to play.

A move changes where the game files are stored; it does not increase the total capacity of the laptop by itself. It can still help if the destination is another drive or an external device with room. Check that Windows recognizes the destination and that the drive will remain accessible at play time. If the destination is disconnected, the game files on it will not be available until it is connected again.

Move an installed Steam game

Steam supports moving installed games after you create a library folder on a drive with available capacity. The client interface can change, so look in Steam’s storage or installed-game controls for the current move option. Steam’s official instructions for moving a Steam installation and games describe the supported process.

  1. In Steam, open the storage or library controls and add a Steam Library folder on the destination drive if one does not already exist.
  2. Open the controls for the installed game you want to relocate and select the move option, then choose the destination library.
  3. Let Steam complete the transfer. A moved installation may need a file-integrity check before it is ready to play.
  4. Launch the game and check that your saves and settings are present before removing any separate backup copies.

Do not assume every save is stored in Steam Cloud. Steam warns that third-party saves not synchronized through Steam Cloud may be in DocumentsMy Games or another location specified by the game’s publisher. Check the game’s own save guidance before moving or cleaning related files.

Steam does not recommend installing Steam on an external hard drive because it can cause performance issues. That caution is separate from whether a particular game can be moved to another library: consider the connection, drive, and launcher support before relying on external storage.

Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model) | External Solid State Drive, Compatible with Laptops & Tablets, Up to 2M Drop Protection, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB-C to USB-A Cable
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

Use the launcher’s move operation as the standard route because it is designed to register the library location. Manually cutting and pasting a game folder can leave the launcher unaware of where the files went; the supported move controls avoid making that guesswork your first step. Once Steam finishes, follow any integrity-check prompt and test the game before treating the move as complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a game’s save data matters, distinguish the game installation from saved progress. A library move is not a guarantee that every publisher’s save system is cloud-synchronized. Steam’s warning specifically covers third-party saves that are not stored in Steam Cloud; they may be in DocumentsMy Games or another publisher-designated location. Do not delete those files as part of a space cleanup unless you have verified what they are and that you no longer need them.

Games installed through Xbox or Microsoft Store

Do not expect one universal move path for every Xbox app or Microsoft Store game. An Xbox Wire post from November 18, 2021 described moving and repairing eligible games through the Xbox app’s Manage option during an Insider feature rollout, and noted that eligibility varied. That dated rollout is not proof that every current game or app version has identical controls. Check the game’s current Manage options in the Xbox app or its options in Settings > Apps > Installed apps before making changes. The original announcement is at Xbox Wire.

If you do not see a move control for a particular Xbox app or Store game, do not assume that manually moving its folder is supported. Check the current app and Windows options for that specific installation. Eligibility and interface behavior can vary, and the 2021 Insider announcement is historical guidance rather than a current compatibility list. If the available controls only offer removal or repair, pause before selecting anything that could uninstall the game.

Can cloud storage or an external drive help?

Yes. Moving infrequently used photos, videos, music, and documents to connected external storage can free internal SSD capacity without touching installed games. Windows also lets you choose where some new content is saved, which can help keep future files from accumulating on the system drive. The trade-off is access: files on an external drive are unavailable from the laptop while that drive is disconnected. Microsoft covers these options in its drive-space guidance.

For future files, Windows’ save-location choices can help direct some new content away from the system drive. Check which content types and destinations are available on your version of Windows; changing a future save location does not necessarily move files already stored on C:. For existing files, move them deliberately and verify the copy is present on the destination before removing the original. This is especially important for personal documents and media that cannot be replaced easily.

Use OneDrive Files On-Demand selectively

OneDrive Files On-Demand can leave files online-only so they take less space on the laptop. Opening an online-only file requires an internet connection. Storage Sense can also make some locally available cloud content online-only according to its settings; files marked Always keep on this device are exempt. Before changing availability, check OneDrive’s sync status and make sure you understand which files will no longer be available offline. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense and drive-space guidance.

Online-only is a local-storage trade-off, not the same as having the file immediately available offline. If you travel, use the laptop away from dependable connectivity, or need a file during a network outage, keep the needed copy available on the device rather than making it online-only. Check sync status before changing availability so you do not mistake an unsynchronized file for one safely stored in the cloud. Files marked Always keep on this device remain exempt from Storage Sense changing them to online-only.

Choose between external storage and cloud access

Option What it can offload Access trade-off What to check
External drive Personal files or, where the launcher supports it, selected game libraries Files and games on the drive require it to be connected Available capacity, laptop port, launcher support, and the drive’s suitability for your use
OneDrive Files On-Demand Cloud-synced personal files that can be online-only Online-only files require network access Sync status, offline needs, and whether files are marked “Always keep on this device”

A portable external SSD is one possible choice if your laptop has a suitable port and the drive has enough capacity, but it is not a guaranteed performance upgrade or universally compatible solution. Steam specifically cautions about potential performance issues when Steam is installed on an external hard drive. If you need a game library to be available wherever you take the laptop, keeping it on an internal drive is more convenient.

Compare options by the space they can move, the chance of losing access when disconnected, their cost, and what the laptop and launcher support. Windows cleanup is built in and free, but it only recovers space represented by items you choose to clean. Cloud online-only files depend on a network connection. An external drive requires a suitable port and enough capacity, and its contents are unavailable when it is not connected. A hardware purchase is not necessary just to perform the documented Windows cleanup steps.

If you consider an external SSD for game storage, treat it as an optional capacity choice, not a performance promise. Verify that the laptop has a suitable port, that the drive has enough room, and that the launcher supports the destination. Steam’s guidance warns of potential performance issues with Steam installed on an external hard drive; it does not establish a universal result for every drive, laptop, or game. Keep a library on an internal drive if convenience and access without an attached device matter more.

What if the SSD fills up again after cleanup?

If the Temp folder rapidly fills again after cleanup, Microsoft identifies Microsoft Store app package files as one possible cause. This is a targeted troubleshooting case, not a reason to start by deleting files inside system folders.

  1. Reset Microsoft Store using the Windows guidance for the issue.
  2. Run wsreset.exe.
  3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
  4. Restart the laptop and check Storage settings again.

Use Microsoft’s drive-space troubleshooting guidance for the applicable Windows version and details. If the same space is repeatedly consumed, inspect Storage settings again rather than repeatedly deleting temporary data without identifying the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This sequence applies to the specific pattern of a Temp folder that quickly refills after cleanup. It is not a general first step for every low-space warning, and it does not prove that Microsoft Store packages are the cause on every laptop. Start with the category breakdown, then use the targeted sequence if the recurring Temp-folder behavior matches. After restarting, recheck the drive instead of assuming a reset or troubleshooter recovered a particular amount of space.

When is adding or replacing storage the better answer?

If cleanup, relocation, and file offloading still leave too little room for the games you use, the limit may be the laptop’s physical storage capacity. An internal SSD upgrade can be a longer-term solution only if the exact laptop supports replacing or adding a drive. Check the laptop maker’s service manual for slot availability, physical size, interface, capacity limits, and installation requirements before buying parts or opening the device. Laptop models differ, and there is no compatible part to recommend without the model details.

A built-in cleanup costs nothing; external or internal storage involves hardware cost and compatibility checks. An external drive is easier to use as additional storage but must be connected for its contents. An internal upgrade can keep a library available without an attached drive, but depends on the laptop’s design and may require installation work. Choose based on the drive space you need, access convenience, and what the laptop supports—not on a promised speed increase.

Do not buy an internal SSD based only on a general laptop description. The service manual for the exact model is the place to confirm whether a drive can be added or replaced, which size and interface are supported, any capacity constraints, and what installation entails. If the laptop has no suitable slot or replacement path, an internal part that fits another model may not fit yours. External storage is also conditional: check the port, usable capacity, and how the launcher handles its library before committing to it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single best option for every player. A free cleanup is the lowest-cost first step but cannot make a small drive physically larger. Moving a supported game to another drive preserves the installation but makes access depend on that destination. Cloud files can save local space when they can be online-only, but need network access. An internal upgrade may be more convenient for a frequently used library if the laptop supports it, but has hardware cost and installation requirements.

A practical order for freeing space while keeping your games

  1. Measure: inspect Settings > System > Storage and identify the largest category.
  2. Review cleanup: examine Cleanup recommendations and remove only items you recognize and no longer need; preserve the previous Windows installation if rollback matters.
  3. Set maintenance carefully: configure Storage Sense only for categories and retention behavior you accept.
  4. Relocate supported games: create a destination library and use the launcher’s move controls rather than manually moving folders.
  5. Offload personal files: use external storage or online-only cloud files where the access trade-off works for you.
  6. Investigate recurring usage: if temporary storage rapidly refills, follow Microsoft’s targeted Store and Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
  7. Consider hardware only after checking compatibility: consult the service manual before planning an internal upgrade.

As Microsoft Support puts it, “Freeing up space can help your device run better and stay secure.” The amount you recover is specific to the laptop and the items you choose to remove or relocate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I free up SSD space without uninstalling my games?

Yes. Start by checking Settings > System > Storage, then review cleanup recommendations, move supported games through their launcher, or offload personal files. The amount recovered depends on what is using space and what you choose to remove or relocate.

Will deleting a previous Windows installation affect my games?

Deleting a previous Windows installation removes the option to roll back to that earlier version of Windows. Review that consequence before removing it; it is separate from moving a game through its launcher.

How do I move a Steam game without uninstalling it?

Create a Steam Library folder on a drive with available capacity, then use Steam’s storage or installed-game controls to move the game. A moved installation may need a file-integrity check. Avoid manually cutting and pasting folders as the standard method.

Are Steam saves always backed up to Steam Cloud?

No. Steam warns that third-party saves not stored in Steam Cloud may be in DocumentsMy Games or another location specified by the publisher. Check the individual game’s save guidance before removing or relocating related files.

Can I move every Xbox app or Microsoft Store game?

Do not assume so. The controls and eligibility can vary by game and app version. Check the current game’s Manage options in the Xbox app or its options under Settings > Apps > Installed apps before making changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do online-only OneDrive files work without internet?

No. Online-only files require network access when you need to open them. Check sync status and offline needs before changing availability; files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from Storage Sense making them online-only.

Is an external SSD a guaranteed way to improve game performance?

No. It may provide additional capacity if the laptop has a suitable port and the launcher supports the destination, but it is not a guaranteed performance upgrade. Steam cautions about potential performance issues when Steam is installed on an external hard drive.

What should I do if the Temp folder rapidly fills again?

Microsoft identifies Microsoft Store app package files as one possible cause. For that specific recurring problem, its Windows guidance describes resetting Microsoft Store, running wsreset.exe, running the Windows Update troubleshooter, and restarting. Check the guidance for your Windows version.

The Bottom Line

Start with Settings > System > Storage, review Windows’ cleanup choices before confirming them, and move games only through launcher controls that support it. Use cloud or external storage only when the network or connected-drive trade-off works for you. If you still need more capacity, verify the exact laptop’s storage options in its service manual before buying hardware.
