Start by treating the Imperial sewers as a tutorial, not a to-do list. After you emerge, test the remaster’s movement and combat, travel to a settlement, talk to residents about rumors, and follow whichever lead interests you. Choose a character style you will enjoy using, practice the skills tied to it, and keep quicksaves so experimentation is safe. The main quest can wait while you learn Cyrodiil through guilds, caves, town mysteries, and other side stories.
Your first decisions after leaving the sewers
The opening escape teaches the basics, but your real game begins when you reach the open world. There is no required route from that point. The central story concerns stopping a Daedric invasion, yet the game is built so you can become a warrior, assassin, sorcerer, blacksmith, or a hybrid and pursue a personal sequence of adventures.

Use the first open area as a test room
Before committing to a distant quest, spend a few minutes learning the remaster’s handling:
- Walk, sprint, jump and change direction until movement feels natural.
- Try blocking, a normal attack and a power attack with your chosen weapon.
- Fire a ranged attack or cast a spell at a safe distance.
- Switch between first- and third-person views to see which gives you better awareness.
- Open your menus, inspect equipment condition and confirm how healing and stamina recovery work on your difficulty setting.
Sprinting, rebuilt combat animation and hit reactions, and a modernized third-person view are among the remaster’s handling changes. Learning them in a low-risk area is more useful than discovering them in a crowded dungeon.

Find a settlement and ask about rumors
Travel to a nearby town or other settlement and speak with people instead of rushing past them. Ask about rumors and listen for references to guilds, caves, shrines, missing people and local disputes. Conversations can reveal quest leads that do not come from the main storyline. Mark interesting locations, then return later if an enemy or lock is beyond your current ability.
Bethesda developers repeatedly recommend this approach. Design Director Al Nanes advises, “Take your time. Don’t be afraid to stray off the path. There’s so much to explore and so much to find.” Studio Art Director Istvan Pely similarly says to start conversations with every NPC and ask about rumors. These are practical instructions for finding content, not flavor text.
Build a character you will actually play
Character creation asks you to choose a race, class and birthsign. There is no single required beginner build. The best combination is the one that supports the actions you expect to perform most often, because using those skills is how you improve them.

Think of the three choices as a direction rather than a permanent promise. Pick a race whose starting strengths fit your preferred approach, select a class that emphasizes the skills you want to practice, and choose a birthsign that complements your resource needs. A character who relies on blades and blocks should not be built around skills they never intend to use simply because a guide labels that arrangement optimal.
If you are uncertain, choose a broad but coherent theme: one primary damage method, one defensive or recovery option, and a small number of utility skills. You can discover the rest while playing. The official beginner guidance emphasizes that different combinations create different experiences and that new players can adjust their priorities as they learn what they enjoy.
Beginner play-style templates
| Style | Priorities | Practical backup |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | One weapon type, blocking and a defensive skill; learn attack timing and power attacks. | Bow or another ranged option for flying or distant enemies. |
| Mage | Several spell roles, including damage, recovery and utility; manage Magicka carefully. | Distance, terrain or a simple weapon when direct spell combat is costly. |
| Stealth or assassin | Sneaking and a dependable opening attack. | A conventional weapon for fights where detection is unavoidable. |
| Hybrid | One primary damage method plus one support skill. | Carry a modest second option rather than training every category at once. |
These are practical starting patterns, not official required classes. A hybrid that uses a sword, a healing spell and occasional stealth is completely valid if those are the actions you enjoy.
How progression works in the remaster
Practice the skills you want to improve
Your progression loop is action-based. Use the weapon, spell, armor, stealth, movement or crafting skills you want to become better at. If Acrobatics interests you, ordinary exploration and even jumping can contribute to that style of play; it is an optional way to practice, not a mandatory leveling chore. Do not repeatedly use an unwanted skill just to chase a theoretical build if it makes the game less enjoyable.

The remaster keeps Oblivion’s identity while adjusting systems for smoother progression and balance. Its leveling redesign draws ideas from both Oblivion and Skyrim, so the pace and feel are not identical to the 2006 release. Let your routine determine your improvements rather than trying to pre-calculate every level.
Manage stamina, Magicka and equipment condition
- Keep enough stamina for blocking, power attacks and movement rather than spending it all on a single exchange.
- Mages should carry damage, recovery and utility spells so that every encounter does not become a contest of raw Magicka.
- Inspect weapons and armor after repeated fights and replace or repair weak gear when a settlement offers the opportunity.
- Use a ranged or defensive fallback before entering spaces where your preferred attack may be ineffective.
Combat habits that prevent early frustration
Choose one reliable routine
For ordinary encounters, use a repeatable sequence: identify the most dangerous target, create enough distance or cover to control the fight, attack with your primary method, then recover before the next engagement. Warriors can block and counter after an enemy commits to an attack. Mages can use terrain and range instead of standing in a melee. Stealth characters should plan an opening strike but accept that some battles will become direct fights.

Carry a backup without diluting your build
A backup is insurance, not a second full character. A warrior may carry a bow; a mage may keep a simple weapon; a stealth character may use a dependable non-stealth attack. One support method is usually more useful in the first hours than distributing attention across every weapon, spell and armor category.
Save before risk, then experiment
Make a quicksave before entering an unfamiliar dungeon, beginning a difficult quest or selecting a dialogue response with lasting consequences. Quicksaves let you test a dangerous path, reload if necessary and learn how a system behaves. Virtuos software engineer Zacharie Cornière summarizes the intended attitude: “Just go for it! Death is temporary. You have quicksaves for a reason.”

Explore in layers
When a location catches your eye, decide whether you are ready for it rather than assuming every visible entrance must be completed immediately. Investigate the exterior, note the route on your map, and leave if the enemies, locks or resource demands are excessive. Returning with better skills or equipment is normal. Emil Pagliarulo, Studio Design Director, describes the design simply: “If you can see it, you can go to it.”
Take useful items, not everything
Early carrying capacity disappears quickly when you collect every low-value object. Prioritize:
- Healing items and other consumables you can use during a fight.
- Lockpicks for access to optional rooms and containers.
- Soul gems when you are equipped to make use of them.
- Weapons, armor and spells that improve your current approach.
- Quest items and objects whose purpose is clear from their descriptions.
Leave bulky, low-value clutter behind. Sell or store upgrades when you return to civilization, and keep enough free space for an unexpected reward.
Should you follow the main quest or explore first?
Neither choice is wrong. The main quest supplies context for the invasion and gives your character a clear direction; side content can introduce guilds, faction stories, town mysteries, caves, shrines and entirely separate adventures. The game’s structure expects you to move between them.
A good first-session balance
- Complete the opening escape and test movement, sprinting, combat, spells and camera perspective.
- Travel to a nearby settlement and ask several residents about rumors.
- Choose one nearby lead that matches your current abilities.
- Return to the main quest when you want a stronger narrative waypoint, not because the game requires it.
If a guild, NPC or unusual landmark holds your attention, follow it. Delaying the main quest does not mean you are playing incorrectly; it is one of the intended ways to experience Cyrodiil.
A practical route through your first 10 hours
- Leave the sewers and pause. Adjust the view, test sprinting and confirm your attack, block, spell and inventory controls.
- Secure basic supplies. Keep a few healing items, lockpicks and a backup attack. Do not fill every slot with cheap loot.
- Visit a settlement. Speak with residents, ask about rumors and note the quests or locations that sound interesting.
- Commit to a primary style. Use one weapon type, a coherent spell set or a stealth routine long enough to learn its timing.
- Take a nearby detour. Enter a cave, investigate a shrine or pursue a local problem. Quicksave first.
- Sell, store and reorganize. Keep upgrades and useful consumables; discard or sell items that only add weight.
- Try a guild or faction story. It offers structured goals while still letting you return to exploration.
- Advance the main quest when curiosity points there. Use its next objective as a waypoint, then resume side content whenever another lead appeals to you.
What the remaster changes
The remaster launched on April 22, 2025. Bethesda says it uses Unreal Engine 5 for visual improvements while retaining the original game’s core identity. Beyond the visual overhaul, the studio identifies sprinting, rebuilt locomotion and combat presentation, updated hit reactions, a modernized third-person mode and a leveling redesign influenced by both Oblivion and Skyrim.
Those changes matter most in the opening hours: movement is more flexible, third-person play is a practical alternative rather than a novelty, and progression is tuned to feel smoother. The world, open-ended role system and broad quest menu remain the foundation, so advice built around talking to NPCs and exploring still applies.

What story content is included?
The complete package includes the base adventure plus the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine story expansions and additional downloadable content. You can begin those stories when their themes or locations interest you; there is no need to clear the main quest first. Treat the package as a menu of campaigns and side adventures, choosing an order that suits your character.
Platforms and edition choices
When deciding how to buy the game, compare access, ownership format and included extras rather than assuming every platform receives the same package.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Trying to level every skill
Spreading early attention across every category leaves you without a dependable combat routine. Return to one primary damage method and one support skill until encounters feel manageable.
Carrying the entire dungeon
Weight slows your ability to profit from exploration. Drop low-value clutter, keep consumables and upgrades, and make regular settlement trips.
Assuming a difficult door means failure
A locked chest, powerful enemy or hazardous tunnel may simply be content for later. Mark the location, improve your skills or equipment, and come back.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A quicksave is a learning tool. Save before a risky conversation or dungeon, experiment, and reload when the result teaches you something you did not intend.
Rushing because the invasion sounds urgent
The invasion provides the premise, not a timer that invalidates side adventures. Let NPC conversations and discovered locations shape your route.
The principle to remember
Oblivion Remastered rewards curiosity more than a perfect opening build. Choose a role that sounds fun, practice the actions that define it, talk to people in every settlement, and keep quicksaves before uncertain decisions. The sewers are only the starting line; your first real objective is to make a few choices and see what story they create.
