Start by completing the tutorial, then take short, purposeful dives: learn to use the harpoon and move safely, keep enough oxygen for the return, and bring back catches that help with your current objective or restaurant dishes. At night, serve sushi and put the proceeds toward gear that makes the next trip safer. That exploration-to-restaurant-to-upgrade loop is the core of Dave the Diver.
How the game’s day-and-night loop works
Dave the Diver is a single-player adventure with RPG elements. During the day, explore the Blue Hole, catch fish, gather resources, and pursue objectives. At night, use the day’s catch in the sushi restaurant. Restaurant income and collected materials help you improve equipment for later dives. The Blue Hole’s terrain and ecology change as you progress, and new characters, quests, and activities open up along the way.

The game’s description on Steam and MINTROCKET’s fact sheet describe this exploration, restaurant, and upgrade cycle. For a first run, follow the main objectives: they introduce systems in a useful order.
Plan each of your first dives
Learn the basics before chasing a big haul
Finish the tutorial and get comfortable with movement, the harpoon, and fast ascent. Morning and afternoon are the main early diving windows; night is used for restaurant service and story progress, with night dives becoming available later. Exact schedules and unlocks can depend on game progression, so follow the objectives shown in your game rather than trying to force a particular timetable.

Choose one purpose for the trip
Before entering the water, decide what would make the dive worthwhile: completing a quest, catching a particular fish, or collecting materials for an upgrade. That focus helps you use limited oxygen and cargo space well. A full backpack is not automatically a successful dive if it leaves no room for an objective item or the materials you need.
Keep a safe return in mind
Oxygen is your main limit. If it runs out, the fish and items collected during that dive are left behind, as the Steam listing explains. Swimming quickly, taking damage, and diving beyond your suit’s depth limit can increase oxygen use, according to the third-party Dave the Diver Wiki beginner guide.

Keep enough oxygen for the trip back and use fast ascent when you need to retreat. The beginner guide offers roughly 40% oxygen as a return-planning rule of thumb, not a game-mandated threshold; your route, depth, condition, and remaining haul matter. If a fight is turning unsafe or oxygen is getting tight, head back rather than risk everything for one more catch.

Different capture methods can affect fish quality. The beginner guide says direct kills usually yield one-star fish, harpoon catches two-star fish, and live-capture tools such as the Steel Net Gun or Tranquilizer Gun can yield three-star fish. It also notes that higher-star catches provide more meat and a higher sale price for the same backpack weight. Treat this as a general strategy from a third-party guide, not a guarantee for every species or situation.

Give cargo space to what serves your current plan. A useful order of consideration is:
- Items required for an active objective.
- Materials for an upgrade you intend to make soon.
- Fish suited to dishes the restaurant can reliably serve.
Skip low-priority pickups when they would crowd out more useful cargo or make the return risky.

What to upgrade first
Early upgrades solve different problems, so spend according to what is holding you back. The beginner guide recommends prioritizing the Diving Suit and Oxygen Tank for safer progression, then improving harpoon effectiveness and backpack capacity. It also emphasizes carrying capacity early; adjust the order to your quest needs and the constraint you notice most.
| Upgrade or tool | What it helps with | Starter guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Diving Suit | Access to deeper areas within the suit’s depth capability. | Prioritize it for safer depth progression. |
| Oxygen Tank | More time underwater before you must return. | Prioritize it if oxygen is limiting useful dives. |
| Harpoon and capture tools | Combat and the way you catch fish. | Improve your main tool rather than spreading scarce materials across many weapons. |
| Backpack capacity | Room to bring back more items. | Raise it when cargo space, rather than oxygen or depth, is limiting your trips. |
Weapon crates let you experiment, but concentrate upgrade materials on a tool that fits your style. The beginner guide suggests the Old Harpoon Gun as a general-use option, the Steel Net Gun for groups of fish, and the Tranquilizer Gun for sharks and other dangerous creatures. These are starter recommendations, not a required build; species, objectives, and available resources can change what is useful. MINTROCKET also frames equipment upgrades as preparation for the dangers of deeper exploration in its game information.
Make the restaurant support your next dive
At night, put the day’s catch to work in sushi service. The income contributes to equipment improvements, while story progress gradually adds systems such as staff, farming, and fish farms. You do not need to optimize a perfect menu before you understand the basics: serve what you have, follow objectives, and use the resulting progress to address the next practical limit on your dives.
Where you can play
MINTROCKET’s fact sheet lists PC and Mac via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 and 5. The PlayStation product page notes PS5 DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, and says the game can be played without motion controls. Choose based on your preferred device and controls; these listings do not establish performance parity or save-transfer support.
