Amazon Kuiper is now called Amazon Leo, and its wider service rollout is planned for 2026; that announcement does not mean households can order it at every address today. Starlink is the established option to check for current local service, but availability, plans, and hardware vary by market. Compare both providers at the same service address, and weigh total cost and the equipment you actually need rather than treating advertised peak speeds as a universal verdict.
Is Amazon Kuiper the same as Amazon Leo?
Yes. Amazon retired the name Project Kuiper on November 13, 2025, and adopted Amazon Leo as the network’s permanent identity. People searching for “Amazon Kuiper” are looking for the service now branded Amazon Leo.

Leo is a planned satellite broadband network, not just a dish or terminal. Amazon describes a system of customer terminals, satellites in low Earth orbit, and gateway antennas connected through ground networking, fiber, and internet connection points. Its initial constellation design calls for more than 3,000 satellites at altitudes of 590–630 km. Amazon’s Leo explainer describes the network and its design.

Amazon Leo: preview and planned rollout
Amazon says its enterprise preview began in November 2025 and that it plans to roll out service more widely during 2026 as it launches additional satellites and adds coverage and capacity. That is a company rollout plan—not confirmation that service is live, orderable, or available to a household at a particular address. Amazon says it intends to reach most countries, but that ambition is not a country-by-country coverage map. Check current local availability before making plans. Amazon’s Amazon Leo page describes the rollout.

Starlink: check the specific address and market
Starlink’s support material identifies local and global plan categories, but exact plan choices and eligibility depend on the market. Its 2025 progress report says it connected more than 4.6 million new active customers and expanded service to 35 additional countries, territories, and other markets during 2025. Those are figures about expansion in that year, not proof of current availability at your address. Use Starlink’s live market-specific information to check eligibility and terms.
How do Amazon Leo and Starlink equipment compare?
Amazon Leo terminals
Amazon lists three terminals with these advertised maximum rates. They are product specifications, not independent test results or a promise of the speed every customer will receive.
Rank #2

Amazon has announced these terminals, but the available information does not establish a general-market purchasing path or confirm which model a household can order in a given country.
Starlink Kit
Starlink uses “Starlink Kit” for a bundle comprising a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount. Hardware availability and specifications can vary by region and generation, so check what the current offer in your market includes rather than assuming every kit is identical. Starlink says performance varies by location, time of day, and the priority assigned to data under the service plan. Its specification document explains those factors, and its support page covers plans, performance, and hardware.
Rank #3

What should you compare before choosing?
Make the comparison for the same location and use case. A country-level claim or a headline speed alone cannot tell you whether a service fits your home, business, or travel needs.
- Check service at the exact address. Confirm country and address eligibility separately for each provider using its current availability information. Do not treat Amazon’s planned rollout or Starlink’s past expansion figures as an address-level answer.
- Identify the relevant plan and its terms. Compare plan type, data limits or priority rules, portability, and support terms where those details are available for your market. Starlink lists local and global plan categories, but choices vary; current country-specific prices and features are not established here.
- Calculate first-year cost, not just the plan charge. Include hardware, recurring service, shipping, taxes, installation, mounting, and accessories required for your site. A like-for-like price comparison is not possible without current local offers.
- Check what is in the equipment bundle. Verify whether a router, power supply, mount, or other needed components are included, and whether the terminal generation offered in your region changes the specifications.
- Match performance evidence to your needs. Keep advertised maximum upload and download rates separate from typical or observed performance. Compare latency, congestion, and data priority only when current, comparable information is available for both services in your market.
- Plan the installation. Assess the mounting location and obstructions, and confirm whether self-installation is supported or a professional installation is needed. Check warranty and service terms before committing.
- Choose for the use case. Fixed home broadband, enterprise connectivity, travel, and remote operations may require different plans, terminals, or installation choices. Do not assume one terminal or plan suits all of them.
Which service should you choose?
Start with the service that is confirmed for your address and use case. Starlink has current market-specific plans and a defined equipment kit to check; Amazon Leo is a developing service whose broader rollout is planned for 2026, with availability dependent on rollout and capacity. The information available does not establish a universal winner, current country-by-country eligibility for Leo, or a current like-for-like price comparison. Decide only after confirming local availability, full costs, equipment, and plan terms.
