Before installing it permanently, use the Starlink app to check for a clear view of the sky. Choose Residential for service at one fixed home address or a Roam plan if you need travel use; availability, plans, prices, and restrictions depend on your location.
How do I get Starlink internet?
The route from checking eligibility to getting online is: confirm the intended service address, choose the right service type, verify that a kit can be ordered there, assess the installation site, and then install and activate the equipment. The address matters from the start: a country-level coverage statement cannot tell you whether Starlink can serve a specific home or what plan is available there.

- Check your address. Open Starlink’s Availability Map, enter the address where the service will be used, and review the result. Starlink says the map shows whether service is available now or pending coverage or regulatory approval.
- Compare the plans offered for that address. Decide whether the service is for a fixed household location or travel, then check local plan names, prices, speeds, and restrictions in the order flow.
- Confirm the equipment offer. On the Standard Kit page, enter the service address and select Order now to check whether the kit is offered there. Availability is limited to supported markets and eligible service categories.
- Check the proposed dish location. Use the Starlink app’s location or obstruction tool before choosing a permanent mount. Branches, poles, roofs, and other obstructions can interrupt service.
- Install and activate. Set up the dish and router using the included equipment and Starlink’s installation guidance. Follow the account’s current activation instructions, which can depend on the address, country, and local capacity.
Starlink advertises coverage in “150+ countries, territories, and other markets,” but that is a broad company statement, not confirmation that a particular address can order service. Its Availability Map, accessed October 11, 2026, also advertises “more than 99.9% average uptime”; this is Starlink’s claim, not an independent measurement or a guarantee for an individual installation.

Is Starlink available at my address?
Use the address-based availability map rather than relying on a country list or a neighbor’s service. Starlink’s map distinguishes areas where service is available now from those where coverage or regulatory approval is pending. The plans and equipment shown can also differ by address, so use the service location you actually intend to register.

Enter the location where you plan to use the dish, not simply a nearby town or a billing address that is somewhere else. For fixed Residential service, the address is part of the plan’s intended use. Checking the exact location also helps reveal whether the order flow offers an eligible kit and which local plan terms and prices apply. Starlink’s statement that it serves more than 150 countries, territories, and other markets describes broad geographic reach; it does not mean every address within those markets can order service.
If the map says service is pending
A pending result means service is not presented as immediately available at that address. Starlink’s activation help information says an area at capacity may allow a deposit during ordering; it also describes a Roam activation route in some capacity situations. These are conditional options, not guaranteed workarounds. Check the current order flow for the address and account rather than assuming a deposit or Roam will be offered.
Capacity and regulatory approval are separate reasons a location may not be ready for a standard service order, and a pending status is not a promise of a specific start date. If an order page presents a deposit or another activation choice, read the terms shown for that address and account. Do not treat an option described for one market or circumstance as universally available.

Confirm that the address is entered in the correct country and that the country selected on Starlink’s site matches the country used to register the account. Starlink warns that a mismatch can prevent activation. If the result still differs from what you expect, rely on the current account and order instructions: capacity, regulatory approval, and local availability can affect the options presented.
It is useful to distinguish an order eligibility issue from an installation issue. A clear place to mount the dish cannot make an unavailable address eligible, and an eligible order does not guarantee that the first site you test will have an unobstructed sky view. Resolve the service-address and account-country details through the Starlink account flow, then assess the physical installation location separately.
Which Starlink plan should I choose?
Choose based on where you will use the service, not just on the advertised speed or price. Starlink describes Residential as personal or household service at a fixed land-based location. It is tied to the registered service address and does not support roaming or in-motion use. A Roam plan is the category to consider for travel or use at another address, subject to the destination and in-motion restrictions that apply in your market.
| Plan category | Intended use | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Residential | Personal or household internet at a fixed land-based location | Service is tied to the registered address; it does not support roaming or in-motion use. Starlink says all Residential plans include unlimited data, but plan eligibility and offers depend on region and address. |
| Roam | Travel-oriented use, including use away from a registered home address where permitted | Destination, coastal, and in-motion restrictions apply. Check the terms shown for your market and intended trip. |
For a household that expects to use Starlink at one registered home, Residential is the relevant category to compare. Its included unlimited data is a useful point of distinction, but “unlimited” does not tell you which speed tier, network priority, or monthly price is offered locally. Starlink’s plan information describes Max, 200 Mbps, and 100 Mbps tiers in some listed markets, with different speed caps and priority. Those differences may matter when comparing available Residential options, but the named tiers are not universal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor someone who needs connectivity away from a fixed home address, compare Roam instead of assuming that Residential can be moved temporarily. Roam is travel-oriented, but its name alone does not answer whether service is allowed in every destination, near every coast, or while a vehicle is moving. Confirm the restrictions that apply to the exact plan and trip before relying on it.

Plan names and limits are not universal. Starlink’s Residential help information describes Max, 200 Mbps, and 100 Mbps tiers in some listed markets, with different speed caps and priority. Other markets may offer Residential and Residential Lite instead. Do not assume that a plan name, speed cap, priority level, or offer shown elsewhere is available at your address.
UK price example
The following figures are UK monthly prices displayed on Starlink’s official service-plan page during a 2026 access observation. They are a market-specific example, not global prices or a promise that the prices remain current. Check the address-based order flow before deciding.
| UK plan shown | Monthly price observed | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Residential 100 Mbps | £40/month | UK page price during the 2026 access observation |
| Residential 200 Mbps | £60/month | UK page price during the 2026 access observation |
| Residential Max | £80/month | UK page price during the 2026 access observation |
| Roam 100GB | £55/month | UK page price during the 2026 access observation |
| Roam Unlimited | £100/month | UK page price during the 2026 access observation |
These figures do not establish what a different country, address, or account will be offered. Prices, plan names, speed limits, and network priority can vary by region and change over time.
The example also shows why it is worth comparing plans within the same use category. The listed UK Residential options have different monthly prices and speed labels; the listed Roam options distinguish 100GB and Unlimited. Those figures should not be used to infer that a reader’s local plan has the same data allowance, speed, price, or name. The current address-specific page is the place to compare the offer that applies to you.
What equipment do I need for Starlink?
The relevant starting point for a typical installation is the Starlink Standard Kit, if it is offered for the service address. Starlink lists these items in the Standard Kit box:
- Starlink dish
- Kickstand
- Router 3
- Starlink cable
- AC cable
- Power supply
The supplied kickstand is intended for ground-level installation or a quick test of the location. A permanent roof, wall, or pole installation may require a separate mount and a cable-routing accessory. Select those only after checking the installation surface and the compatibility information for the exact kit; the included equipment list does not mean every site can use the same mount or cable route.
Confirm that the Standard Kit is actually offered for your service address before planning around it. Starlink’s kit availability instructions direct customers to enter the address and select “Order now.” The company says the kit is available to Residential, Roam, Business, and Enterprise customers in supported markets, but that does not guarantee availability in every market or for every address.
Think of the included kickstand as a way to test a location or make a ground-level setup, not as proof that a permanent elevated installation is complete. If you need to mount the dish on a roof, wall, or pole, the appropriate mount depends on the structure and the exact hardware. Cable-routing accessories may also be needed for a permanent installation. Check compatibility before purchasing an add-on; no single mount or cable accessory is established as right for every building.

Starlink’s published kit contents identify the core dish, router, cables, power supply, and kickstand. They do not establish that every home needs the same extras, or that a particular third-party item is compatible. Start with the official kit offer and installation guidance, then determine whether the tested position and cable route call for additional hardware.
How do I set up Starlink?
Starlink describes its equipment as self-installable. Its installation guidance says to find a location with the app, place the equipment where the sky view is clear, connect the dish cable to the router, and connect power. The router should be placed centrally in the home for better Wi-Fi coverage. The specific physical route for the cable and permanent mounting method will depend on your building and the hardware supplied.
- Find a candidate location with the app. Use the Starlink app’s obstruction or location tool before committing to a permanent position. Check the proposed spot rather than judging only from indoors or from a map.
- Test with the included kickstand. For an initial ground-level setup, place the Starlink where the app indicates a clear sky view and the equipment can be connected as directed. Avoid a location where branches, poles, rooflines, or other objects block the view.
- Connect the equipment. Connect the Starlink cable to the router, then connect power using the supplied AC cable and power supply. Follow the instructions for the kit in hand if its connectors or setup prompts differ.
- Position the router for household coverage. Starlink recommends a central location in the home to improve Wi-Fi coverage. The router’s placement affects in-home Wi-Fi reach; it does not correct an obstructed dish view.
- Complete the account’s activation steps. Use the current instructions in the Starlink account or app. If the service address or account country is inconsistent, activation may fail; use matching country details as Starlink directs.
- Decide whether the test position is suitable for permanent use. If the app identifies obstructions or the location is not practical, assess another site before buying or fitting a permanent mount.
Starlink’s Standard Install Guide illustrates an approximate 110-degree sky view and a 20-degree elevation angle for the Standard kit. Treat those dimensions as guide-specific installation advice, not a performance guarantee for every property. The central practical test is whether the app identifies a sufficiently clear view for the installation location.

If the app indicates that a candidate position has obstructions, do not assume that changing the router’s location will solve the dish’s blocked view. The router is placed for Wi-Fi coverage inside the home; the dish needs the clear sky view.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I choose an installation site?
A clear sky view matters because the dish must maintain a connection with satellites moving overhead. Starlink’s Standard Install Guide states: “Your Starlink needs a clear view of the sky so it can stay connected with satellites as they move overhead.” Obstructions can cause service interruptions, even if the equipment connects during an initial test.
- Use the app before mounting. Check the proposed position with the obstruction/location tool, then assess alternatives if it detects blocked sky.
- Think beyond the first connection. A ground-level test helps evaluate a location, but a permanent mount may change the dish’s position and require a fresh site assessment.
- Plan the cable route. A permanent elevated installation may call for separate mounting or cable-routing accessories. Verify exact compatibility rather than assuming the kit includes every item needed for a roof, wall, or pole.
- Get help if the installation is unusual. Starlink says certified professional installers are available for difficult or unusual installations. Choose an installer appropriate for your location and site.
Starlink says the system is built for self-installation and can get users online in minutes, but that describes the intended setup experience, not a guaranteed installation time. A challenging mounting position, cable route, or obstructed site can require additional work.
When considering a permanent location, evaluate the whole installation rather than just whether the dish can sit there: the sky view, mounting surface, safe cable route, and practical placement of the router all matter. The official guide’s approximate 110-degree sky view and 20-degree elevation angle are guidance for the Standard kit, not a substitute for using the app at your specific site. If a roof or pole position is needed, confirm that the selected accessory fits the structure and kit before mounting.
For an unusual or difficult installation, Starlink says certified professional installers are available. That is an option for readers who need help with site-specific mounting or routing, rather than a requirement for every customer. The installation guidance does not establish a universal installation price or guarantee that an installer is available in every location, so confirm local availability and terms directly.

Can I use Starlink while traveling?
Residential service is for a fixed land-based location and is not the plan for roaming between addresses. Starlink identifies Roam as the travel-oriented category. Before relying on it for a trip, check the destination, coastal-use, and in-motion restrictions that apply to the specific market and plan. The fact that a plan is labeled Roam does not establish that service is permitted in every destination or while a vehicle is moving.
If you want service at a home and on trips, compare the applicable plan terms and costs in the account’s current order flow. Do not assume a Residential plan can simply be moved temporarily: Starlink says Residential does not support roaming, and a Roam plan is required for use at a different address or while traveling.
Before departure, check the destinations and type of use you have in mind against the specific Roam terms shown for your market. A trip that includes travel between countries, coastal use, or use while in motion raises different questions from using service while stationary at another location. The available information does not make every destination or travel scenario automatically eligible, so verify the relevant restrictions before depending on connectivity.

What to verify before placing an order
- The service address is the exact location where fixed Residential service will be used.
- The map indicates whether service is available now, pending, or subject to another current order option.
- The plan is appropriate for fixed-home or travel use, and its restrictions fit your use case.
- The local order flow confirms the kit is offered for that address.
- The app indicates a plausible installation point with a clear sky view.
- Any permanent mount or cable-routing accessory is compatible with the kit and site.
- The account registration country matches the country selected on the Starlink site.
Availability, prices, plans, kit offers, and activation choices are dynamic and location-specific. Starlink’s map, plan information, account, and installation materials are the authoritative places to confirm the current options for a particular address.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check whether Starlink is available at my address?
Enter the exact intended service address in Starlink’s Availability Map and review the result and plans shown. The map can show service available now or pending coverage or regulatory approval; a country-level coverage claim does not confirm order eligibility at a particular address.
What should I do if Starlink says service is pending or the area is at capacity?
Check the current order and account flow for that address. Starlink says some capacity situations may allow a deposit or describe a Roam activation route, but these options are conditional and are not guaranteed for every address.
Does the Starlink Standard Kit include a mount?
The listed Standard Kit contents include a kickstand, intended for ground-level installation or a quick location test. A permanent roof, wall, or pole installation may need a separate compatible mount and cable-routing accessory; verify fit for the exact kit and site.
Can I use my Residential Starlink plan while traveling?
Residential service is tied to its registered fixed land-based address and does not support roaming or in-motion use. Starlink identifies Roam for travel, but destination, coastal, and in-motion limitations may apply, so check the specific plan terms for your market and trip.
Can I install Starlink myself?
Starlink describes its setup as self-installable: use the app to find a clear sky view, place the dish, connect the dish cable to the router, and connect power. It also says certified professional installers are available for difficult or unusual installations.
The Bottom Line
To get Starlink, check your exact service address, choose Residential for fixed-home service or Roam for eligible travel, and confirm the Standard Kit is offered before ordering. Use the app to test for a clear sky view, then install with the included kickstand before deciding whether your site needs a compatible permanent mount or cable-routing accessory. Plans, prices, capacity, and travel restrictions vary by address and market, so verify the current account and order details before committing.
