Hell Is Us Combat Tips: Manage Stamina, Dodge, Parry, and Choose a Weapon

Treat stamina as both an attack budget and a defensive reserve. Learn a practical attack-and-recover rhythm, use dodges with purpose, practice parries against readable attacks, and choose a weapon by its moveset rather than an unsupported ranking.

In Hell Is Us, stamina is both your attack budget and your margin for defense. Avoid spending it all on long attack strings or repeated dodges: watch enemy wind-ups, keep some stamina available to react, and use short pauses between attacks to recover. There is no verified universal best weapon among the swords, spears, and axes named by PlayStation; choose by trying their movesets and favoring one that lets you attack without giving up your ability to defend.

How stamina shapes a fight

A guide and review of Hell Is Us reports that the stamina gauge is used for light and heavy attacks, dodges, parries, and blocks. That makes stamina more than a way to keep attacking: it is also the resource that lets you respond when an enemy threatens you. An attack that leaves the gauge empty may do damage, but it can also leave you without the defensive response you need next.

The same guide reports that incoming hits can temporarily reduce maximum stamina. The available sources do not establish the exact conditions, duration, or size of that reduction, so treat it as a reason to protect your health and manage stamina conservatively—not as a formula you can calculate around. A combat guide also says current health affects the stamina ceiling, but does not provide an exact relationship. That detail is guide-reported rather than confirmed on PlayStation’s official product page.

Keep a reserve instead of spending to zero

The beginner guide at HellIsUs.org, updated in June 2026, suggests reserving 20–30% of the stamina gauge for an emergency dodge or parry. That range is a tactical recommendation from the guide, not an official game rule or a tested threshold. Use it as a starting point: if you repeatedly finish an attack sequence unable to answer the next enemy move, shorten the sequence or pause sooner.

Your reserve is not a fixed amount that must be identical in every encounter. A predictable enemy whose attacks you can read may give you more time to recover between exchanges; an unfamiliar or aggressive opponent argues for leaving a larger margin. The point is to make the next defensive action part of the spending decision before you commit to another attack.

A repeatable attack-and-recover rhythm

Rather than hold the attack until stamina is nearly gone, treat each exchange as a short cycle: observe, attack, reassess, and recover if the opening has closed. The June 2026 beginner guide recommends short attack strings and a pause between them so that some stamina can return. The sources do not specify a regeneration rate or a required pause length, so use the gauge and the enemy’s behavior as your cues rather than relying on a timer.

  1. Watch before committing. Look for the opponent’s wind-up and decide whether you have a safe opening. Do not assume that an enemy is finished simply because you have landed a hit.
  2. Use a brief attack string. The guide’s advice is to avoid spending the whole gauge on one extended sequence. Stop while you still have room to respond, especially when the enemy can attack again quickly.
  3. Reassess the threat. If the opponent is preparing an attack, prioritize the defensive response you have practiced. If there is a lull, let stamina recover partially before beginning another chain.
  4. Repeat only when the opening remains. An attack opportunity is useful only if taking it does not leave you unable to handle the next tell.

This is a control strategy, not a guaranteed combo or timing sequence. The retrieved sources provide no named combo, attack-cancel rule, stamina cost per move, or regeneration value. Adjust the length of your strings to what the game shows you and to whether you can still defend after the sequence.

When to dodge—and what the dodge should accomplish

The basic combat guide describes dodging as a way to create distance or close it, while warning against repeated dashes that exhaust stamina. Use a dodge to answer a threat or deliberately change spacing, not as a reflexive replacement for reading the opponent. Because dodges draw on the same stamina budget as attacks and other defensive actions according to the guide/review, unnecessary movement can reduce your options later in the exchange.

Dodge to escape a threat

When an enemy’s wind-up signals an attack you do not intend to parry, dodge to move out of danger or reposition. The purpose is to avoid being caught by the incoming threat and preserve room to choose your next action. The available sources do not establish invulnerability frames, dodge distance, or a universal timing window, so do not rely on an assumed number of frames or a fixed direction for every attack.

Dodge to change spacing

A dodge can also create distance or close it, as the basic guide describes. Decide which result you need before spending stamina. Creating space can give you room to observe what the opponent does next; closing distance can help you return to an attack opportunity. The sources do not compare the safety or effectiveness of particular directions, so use the opponent’s position and the space around you rather than assuming one direction is always best.

Parrying: read the wind-up, then practice the timing

The tips guide recommends watching enemy wind-ups and practicing parries against more predictable attacks. A review guide describes a well-timed parry as placing your weapon as an enemy attack connects; it says a successful parry negates damage and opens a punish window. The tips guide likewise describes a successful parry as staggering an enemy and creating an opportunity to counterattack. These are guide-reported mechanics, not detailed official timing instructions.

Start with an opponent whose attack is easier for you to recognize. Focus on the tell and the moment the attack arrives rather than pressing parry as soon as the enemy begins to move. If you miss, treat that as information about your timing and the stamina you have left; do not automatically follow a failed attempt with an attack string that leaves no defensive reserve.

A parry is useful when you can recognize the attack and execute the timing reliably. A dodge is the more sensible response when you do not understand the tell, do not want to risk a mistimed parry, or need to change spacing. The sources do not establish that every enemy attack can be parried, so do not assume a successful response to one predictable move applies to all opponents.

Choosing between swords, spears, and axes

PlayStation’s official product page identifies swords, spears, and axes among the weapons used against supernatural creatures. It does not publish comparative stats, stamina costs, or a weapon ranking. The evidence therefore does not support calling one category the best for damage, reach, speed, or stamina efficiency.

Weapon category What the available evidence establishes What to check in play
Sword Named as a weapon category on PlayStation’s official product page; no comparative stats stated there. Read any in-game description or displayed values, then assess whether its attacks leave you enough stamina and time to defend.
Spear Named as a weapon category on PlayStation’s official product page; no comparative stats stated there. Assess its moveset and any stated reach or stamina information in the game; judge how safely you can return to defense after attacking.
Axe Named as a weapon category on PlayStation’s official product page; no comparative stats stated there. Assess its moveset and any stated damage or stamina information in the game; check whether its attack commitment suits your timing.

The final column is a comparison method, not a claim about what each weapon category does. No reliable comparison in the available sources establishes which category attacks faster, reaches farther, deals more damage, costs less stamina, or offers a safer recovery. Check tooltips or displayed values if the game provides them, and judge the practical feel of each moveset rather than importing a presumed archetype—for example, assuming every spear is safer at range or every axe is slower.

Choose for the attacks you can use safely

Try a weapon long enough to learn how its attacks fit into the stamina rhythm you can maintain. Ask whether you can land the attacks you intend to use, stop before your reserve disappears, and recognize when it is time to dodge or parry. A weapon that looks appealing on a single damage figure may be a poor fit if its use repeatedly leaves you unable to react; a moveset you can use with discipline may serve you better. That is a personal handling decision, not a universal ranking.

Keep equipment and health in the combat plan

The June 2026 beginner guide recommends upgrading a primary weapon and defensive equipment. The retrieved material does not identify particular upgrades, their costs, or their numerical effects, so follow the upgrade descriptions shown in your game and prioritize equipment you actually use. Do not assume that a named upgrade changes stamina unless its description says so.

Health matters to your ability to keep fighting. One combat guide says current health affects the available stamina ceiling, while another guide/review reports that incoming hits can temporarily lower maximum stamina. Neither provides an exact formula or enough detail to predict a specific gauge change. Taken together, those reports support avoiding preventable damage and paying attention to the gauge after you are hit, but not a precise health-to-stamina calculation.

Common stamina mistakes and how to correct them

  • Using the entire gauge for attacks: shorten the chain and pause while there is still enough stamina for a defensive response.
  • Dashing without a clear purpose: identify whether you need to avoid an attack, create distance, or close it before spending stamina on a dodge.
  • Parrying before you recognize the tell: practice against a more predictable attack and focus on the moment the hit connects, as described by the review guide.
  • Attacking immediately after a successful defense: take the opening only if you have stamina and the opponent’s state gives you time. A parry can create a punish window according to the guide/review, but the sources do not specify its duration.
  • Assuming every weapon category has a known role: use the in-game descriptions and your own controlled comparison; the official page names the categories but does not establish their relative stats.
  • Ignoring the gauge after taking damage: check it before committing to another exchange, since guide material reports that hits can affect maximum stamina and that health is related to the available ceiling.

What the available sources do—and do not—confirm

PlayStation’s official product page describes Hell Is Us as a third-person action-adventure and names swords, spears, and axes among its weapons, alongside a drone. It does not provide combat statistics or weapon rankings. The practical stamina, dodge, parry, block, health, and upgrade advice above comes from guides and a review rather than detailed official combat documentation; the 20–30% reserve in particular is a recommendation from the HellIsUs.org beginner guide updated in June 2026.

Exact stamina costs, regeneration rates, weapon performance rankings, and patch-specific balance are not established by these sources. Use the game’s current descriptions and gauges for any figures they display, and avoid treating guide advice as a universal numerical rule.
