How to Get Spotify Local Files onto Your Phone

Enable Spotify’s Local audio files setting, put tracks on your phone, and check desktop folder access if you’re trying to use computer files.

If Spotify local files won’t show up on your phone, first make sure the audio is available on the phone itself, then enable Local audio files in the mobile app. If you’re starting from a computer, also check that Spotify desktop can read the folder containing the tracks. These steps make files available to Spotify; they do not guarantee that every desktop playlist of local tracks will sync to mobile.

Turn on local audio files in Spotify mobile

  1. Open Spotify and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings and privacy, then Apps and devices.
  3. Turn on Local audio files.
  4. Open Your Library > Local Files to find audio stored on the phone.

Spotify notes that device settings may also need to allow access to audio files. If the switch is on but the tracks are absent, check that the files are actually stored on the phone or follow the appropriate transfer steps below. Menu labels can vary by app version. Spotify’s Local files instructions cover both mobile platforms.

Put the audio files where Spotify can access them

The file-placement steps differ between iPhone and Android. A computer transfer is one option, not a requirement if the tracks are already on the phone.

On iPhone or iPad

Spotify’s iOS instructions describe using Apple’s Files app to copy or move an audio file from a browser or storage app into On My iPhone > Spotify. Spotify also documents transferring from a Mac through Finder or Universal Clipboard, and from Windows through iTunes. Once the audio is in place, enable Local audio files in Spotify and look in Your Library > Local Files.

If the Spotify folder is missing under On My iPhone, Spotify says it may be because the folder’s Help file was deleted. Restart Spotify; the folder should appear again.

On Android

You can download an audio file through another Android app, such as a file-storage app, then turn on Local audio files in Spotify. For computer transfers, Spotify describes using USB from Windows: unlock the phone and allow access to device data when prompted. For Mac, Spotify describes using an Android file-transfer app and notes that a USB cable may be needed. The available transfer method can depend on the device and setup; Spotify does not specify one universal Android file manager or transfer app.

If you’re adding tracks from a computer

Spotify desktop has its own local-file control. Open desktop Spotify’s Settings, scroll to Library, and turn on Show Local Files. Under Show songs from, enable the folder that contains your audio, or add another source folder. If Spotify desktop cannot read that folder, its local-file library will not include those tracks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After confirming the desktop source, make sure the actual files are also on the phone using the relevant iOS or Android steps above. A playlist containing local tracks on a computer and audio files accessible on a phone are related, but they are not the same thing. Spotify’s instructions do not fully spell out every condition for desktop-playlist syncing, so enabling these settings is not a guarantee that every such playlist will appear on mobile.

Troubleshoot tracks that still do not appear

Work through these checks in order, changing one thing at a time so you can see whether the files become available.

  1. Verify the phone has the files. Use the iOS folder or Android download/transfer method above; a track visible only on your computer is not yet stored on the phone.
  2. Check Spotify mobile. Turn on Local audio files under Settings and privacy > Apps and devices, then check Your Library > Local Files.
  3. Check the desktop source, if applicable. Turn on Show Local Files and confirm the correct folder is enabled under Show songs from.
  4. Update Spotify and the device. Spotify recommends making sure both the app and device are up to date.
  5. Redo the local-file playlist setup. If you already added the local tracks to playlists, remove them from the affected playlists, then repeat Spotify’s local-file steps.
  6. Restart Spotify. This is specifically suggested if the iPhone Spotify folder is missing after its Help file was deleted.
  7. Reinstall only if needed. Follow Spotify’s clean-reinstall instructions if the earlier steps do not help. Reinstalling removes Spotify’s offline downloads, so you will need to download saved Spotify music and podcasts again. This is separate from your own source audio files. Spotify’s general playback troubleshooting also recommends restarting, updating, or reinstalling for technical playback issues.

What a USB cable can—and cannot—fix

A USB data-transfer cable can be part of moving files between a computer and phone: Spotify documents USB transfer steps for iOS and Android, and says a cable may be needed for its Android Mac workflow. The cable only helps with file transfer. It cannot turn on Spotify’s local-file setting, enable the wrong desktop folder, or guarantee that a desktop playlist will sync.
