Beds can clear netherrack quickly and TNT is effective when you already have large supplies, but neither has a universally proven seconds-per-ingot advantage. Your best method depends on preparation, available explosives, and how safely you can work in the Nether.

What you need before searching for Netherite
Netherite is not a single ore block that you mine and smelt. The progression has four separate requirements: a mining tool, Ancient Debris, Gold Ingots, and a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template.

Where Ancient Debris generates
Ancient Debris generates in the Nether and is deliberately hidden inside netherrack and other blocks. It never generates exposed to air, so simply scanning cavern walls is unreliable. Mojang Studios explained in its 25 March 2021 Netherite article that you will have to dig for it and that a diamond pickaxe is required to mine it.
Mojang describes two possible distribution bands per chunk: one between Y=8 and Y=22, and another between Y=8 and Y=119. The overlap makes the middle-lower Nether especially useful. Y=15 has the highest average chance, but it is not a guarantee and does not mean every chunk contains debris.
Mojang writer Duncan Geere summarized the practical limitation in 2021: “Ancient debris isn’t easy to find – it never generates exposed to the air, so you’ll have to go digging.”
Use the coordinate shown by the debug screen on Java Edition or the coordinate display on Bedrock. The coordinate is your feet or block position, so keep your mining tunnel centered around the target level rather than assuming the number shown while standing on a floor is the block directly beneath you.
Which Netherite method is fastest for your situation?
No cited source publishes a controlled seconds-per-ingot test, so there is no universal numeric winner. Compare methods by the time spent gathering supplies, the amount of terrain each method reveals, and the danger created by explosions or hostile mobs.

A practical progression is to start with branch mining if you lack equipment, switch to beds when wool is abundant, and reserve TNT for a prepared world. If you do not yet have a template, search Bastions before spending hours collecting debris that you cannot apply.

Pack for both mining and an emergency retreat. The following loadout prevents most failed runs:
- Diamond pickaxe: bring one with enough durability for your planned tunnels, and carry a second pickaxe or repair option when possible.
- Fire protection: Fire Resistance potions are the strongest safety margin. If you do not have them, carry plentiful solid blocks and keep a clear route back to your portal.
- Food: take more than the minimum because sprinting, combat, and repeated explosions consume hunger.
- Building blocks: use a common, non-flammable block to seal lava, make blast barriers, and bridge gaps.
- Coordinates and markers: record your portal position and mark each branch or blast line so you do not circle back into exhausted tunnels.
- Gold armor: wear a gold armor piece when approaching ordinary Piglins, while remembering that Piglin Brutes in Bastions remain a serious threat.
- Explosive supplies: beds or TNT only if you can place them from behind cover and have a retreat path.
- Storage: carry spare inventory space; Ancient Debris is rare enough that abandoning pieces because your inventory is full is avoidable.
A complete fastest-practical route
- Enter the Nether prepared. Bring the diamond pickaxe, food, blocks, fire protection or a retreat plan, coordinate markers, and at least one gold armor piece.
- Locate a Bastion Remnant. Search the Nether while staying alert for Piglins and Piglin Brutes. Do not commit to a structure without identifying an escape route and a defensible position.
- Prioritize a Treasure Room Bastion. Mojang’s official Java Snapshot 23w04a notes from 24 January 2023 state that Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates can appear randomly in all Bastion Remnant chests and that every Treasure Room Bastion guarantees two. Other Bastion chests can still contain a template, but they do not carry that guarantee.
- Secure the template before deep mining. Store one safely in a chest or ender chest if available. A template is consumed each time you use it at a smithing table, so losing your only copy forces another Bastion search.
- Move to the target mining level. Dig a protected staircase or shaft to around
Y=15. Avoid dropping straight down, because lava can occupy the next block. - Reveal blocks with your chosen method. Make controlled branch tunnels if supplies are limited; use beds or TNT from behind blast cover when you have practiced the procedure.
- Mine every Ancient Debris block with the diamond pickaxe. It is commonly surrounded by netherrack, so inspect the roof, floor, and side walls of every opening before moving on.
- Return through a marked route. Carrying debris through an unmarked maze is an unnecessary risk. Seal dangerous lava openings and keep your portal coordinates available.
- Smelt the debris. Place Ancient Debris in a furnace or blast furnace. Each piece produces one Netherite Scrap.
- Craft ingots. Combine four Netherite Scrap and four Gold Ingots to make one Netherite Ingot.
- Duplicate the template before multiple upgrades. In a crafting table, use seven diamonds, one block of the template’s material, and one Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template; the recipe produces two templates. This lets you retain a copy while preparing additional upgrades.
- Apply an upgrade. Put the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, a diamond tool, weapon, or armor piece, and one Netherite Ingot into a smithing table.
Branch mining: the dependable baseline
Branch mining has the smallest setup burden and is the easiest method to recover from. It is also the best way to learn the Nether’s lava behavior before attempting explosions.
How to lay out the tunnels
- Reach approximately
Y=15and create a two-block-high main corridor. - Cut side branches from the corridor, leaving enough solid rock between adjacent branches that each new tunnel exposes fresh faces instead of repeatedly showing the same blocks.
- Light or otherwise mark completed sections. Keep the route simple enough to retrace.
- When lava appears, stop mining forward, place blocks to contain the flow, and open a side route rather than charging into the pocket.
- Inspect every exposed surface, including the ceiling and floor, because Ancient Debris can be embedded behind any of them.
This method trades terrain-clearing speed for low risk and zero explosive materials. It is usually the right choice when you have a diamond pickaxe but no reliable supply of wool, gunpowder, or sand.
Bed mining: fast clearing with a lethal failure mode
Beds cannot be used normally in the Nether. Attempting to sleep makes the bed explode, which is why beds can clear netherrack quickly. Treat each bed as an explosive charge, not as a respawn point.

Safer bed procedure
- Prepare a straight tunnel at the target level and keep your exit behind you.
- Place a bed at the end of a short branch, leaving enough room to retreat.
- Build a solid blast barrier between your position and the bed. The barrier should block the direct blast while allowing you to interact with the bed from cover.
- Use the bed, immediately retreat behind the barrier, and wait for the explosion to finish.
- Approach only after checking for exposed lava and fire. Mine visible Ancient Debris with the diamond pickaxe.
- Repeat with a consistent spacing pattern so overlapping blasts reveal new blocks instead of wasting beds on already-cleared space.
Never stand beside the bed, ignite one in an open cavern without cover, or place several where a single chain reaction can remove your retreat path. Beds are attractive because wool and wood are renewable, but a single positioning error can erase the inventory you were trying to build.
TNT mining: powerful when supplies are already available
TNT is a better fit for a prepared player than for a fresh Nether expedition. You need a dependable supply of gunpowder and sand, plus a way to ignite charges without entering the blast zone. The setup cost can outweigh the time saved if you must gather every ingredient manually.
A controlled TNT line
- Dig a straight, protected tunnel around the target level and mark the direction back to safety.
- Place TNT in a repeatable spacing pattern rather than scattering charges randomly. Consistency makes it easier to inspect the newly exposed walls.
- Stand behind a solid corner or barrier before ignition and keep a clear retreat path.
- After the blast, wait for fire and lava flows to settle, then inspect all exposed surfaces for Ancient Debris.
- Collect debris and remove unstable blocks before extending the line.
TNT can reveal a large volume quickly, but it consumes supplies and can destroy or bury items in a chaotic blast. Use it where you have enough materials to repeat the operation and enough space to keep the explosions controlled.
Finding and surviving a Bastion Remnant
The Bastion-first route is not a mining shortcut by itself; it solves the separate template requirement. Bastions are dangerous because Piglins and Piglin Brutes can attack in confined corridors, while opening a chest can trigger nearby hostility. Bring blocks to close sight lines, food for recovery, and an escape tunnel or bridge that you can reach without crossing the structure again.
Chest priorities
- Treasure Room: this is the highest-value target because Mojang documents a guarantee of two Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates in every Treasure Room Bastion.
- Other Bastion chests: templates can appear randomly, but there is no stated guarantee.
- Safe extraction: once you obtain a template, retreat and store it before continuing to mine. A template is consumed when used, so treating both guaranteed copies as disposable wastes the advantage of the Treasure Room.
If the first Bastion is not a Treasure Room, you can either loot its random chests carefully or continue searching. The choice depends on your armor, food, fire protection, and willingness to fight; there is no requirement to clear the entire structure before leaving.

Smelting, crafting, and upgrading without mistakes
Turn debris into an ingot
- Place a furnace or blast furnace.
- Put Ancient Debris in the input slot and fuel in the fuel slot.
- Collect the resulting Netherite Scrap. Each Ancient Debris produces one scrap.
- Open a crafting table and place four Netherite Scrap with four Gold Ingots to create one Netherite Ingot.
Gold is not optional: four scraps alone cannot produce an ingot. Gather the gold before you begin a long mining run or make a separate trip so your debris does not sit unused.
Use the smithing table
- Open the smithing table interface.
- Place one Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in the template slot.
- Place the diamond armor piece, tool, or weapon in the equipment slot.
- Place one Netherite Ingot in the material slot.
- Take the Netherite result from the output slot.
The template is consumed in this operation. The upgrade preserves the diamond item’s enchantments and durability state while changing it to Netherite, but the critical resource calculation is simple: one ingot and one template per item.

The duplication recipe uses seven diamonds, one block of the template’s material, and one copy of the template to produce two templates. Because the input template is consumed as part of crafting, the net result is one additional copy. Duplicate first, then spend templates on armor, tools, or weapons.
Common failure modes and fixes
Mining at the wrong height
There is no level that guarantees Ancient Debris. The documented highest average chance is around Y=15; moving far above or below that level can reduce efficiency. Reposition your tunnel instead of assuming an unlucky stretch proves the method is broken.
Searching open Nether caves
Ancient Debris never generates exposed to air. A cavern can be useful for navigation, but its visible walls are not a complete search. Dig controlled tunnels through solid blocks to reveal hidden veins.

Using a non-diamond pickaxe
Mining with an inferior pickaxe wastes durability and may destroy your opportunity to collect the block. Switch to a diamond pickaxe before breaking Ancient Debris.
Spending the only template
Older guides that say a diamond item and an ingot are enough describe the pre-template system. In current releases using the redesigned smithing system, a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template is mandatory and is consumed. Duplicate it before upgrading several items.
Exploding without a retreat
Beds and TNT can expose lava, remove your floor, and leave you inside fire or hostile-mob territory. Build a barrier, keep blocks on the hotbar, and make the retreat route before placing the explosive.
Leaving with debris but no gold
Ancient Debris alone cannot become Netherite. Plan for four Gold Ingots per ingot and keep the two resource counts together while deciding how many upgrades you can afford.
Getting lost in a branch network
Mark the main corridor, record portal coordinates, and close completed branches. A small amount of navigation discipline protects both the debris and the template you worked to obtain.
Edition and version notes
The template requirement comes from the redesigned smithing system introduced during the Minecraft 1.20 development cycle. Guides written before that change may omit the Bastion search and duplication recipe; they are not complete instructions for modern Java or Bedrock releases that use Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates.
Mojang’s distribution figures and Treasure Room guarantee are published statements, not promises that every world seed will provide an easy structure nearby. World generation, loot tables, and smithing mechanics can change in later releases, so check the notes for the exact version you are playing when a mechanic appears different.
Choosing your route
- Starting from scratch: use branch mining around
Y=15, because it requires the fewest supplies and gives you direct control over danger. - Plenty of wool and wood: use beds behind blast barriers for faster terrain clearing, accepting the higher consequence of a placement error.
- Established storage and farms: use TNT when gunpowder and sand are already available and you can repeat a controlled blast pattern.
- No template yet: make Bastion hunting the first objective, prioritizing a Treasure Room, then mine once you can actually apply the Netherite you collect.
The Bottom Line
For most players, the fastest practical plan is a Bastion search for the required template followed by controlled mining around Y=15. Use beds or TNT only when their supplies and safety procedures genuinely save time; the guaranteed ingredients remain four Ancient Debris and four Gold Ingots for every Netherite Ingot.
