Update Palworld to version 0.3.1 or later, load your existing world, and sail or fly northwest into the previously unexplored map area. Sakurajima lies north of Icy Wind Island and Forgotten Island and southwest of the Astral Mountains. There is no cited hard entry-level requirement, but it is endgame content: GameSpot reported wild Pals beginning around levels 42–43, with many in the mid-to-upper 40s and deeper areas at level 50 or above. Prepare a high-level team, healing items, ammunition and durable armor before making the trip.

What the Sakurajima update is
Sakurajima is a large island added in Palworld’s June 27, 2024 update. It is part of the existing world map, not a separate downloadable map or a new save. After installing version 0.3.1 or a later client, the island appears in the northwest portion of your current map. You keep your character, Pals, bases and inventory, then travel there like any other region.

Pocketpair’s update also raises the player level cap to 55, adds technologies and increases the Pal capture-bonus limit from 10 to 12. The island introduces new Pals, the Moonflowers faction and tower, new resource and crafting loops, the Rayne Syndicate Oil Rig, a multiplayer Arena, the Blazamut Ryu raid, meteorite events, tower-boss hard modes, Dog Coins and a Medal Merchant.
Before you leave: requirements and preparation
Install the right game version
- Update Palworld to version 0.3.1 or later on your platform.
- Launch the updated client and load the world that contains your established character and bases.
- Open the map and check the northwest edge. The Sakurajima area may still be covered by unexplored fog until you physically approach it.
The original patch notes describe the historical 0.3.1 release. Later versions can change level caps, balance, platforms or availability, so the live client’s version number takes precedence over old screenshots or guides.

How strong should your character and team be?
No official minimum entry level is cited. That does not make the island beginner-friendly. GameSpot’s 2024 report places the lowest-level wild Pals at roughly 42–43, with many encounters in the mid-to-upper 40s and some deeper areas at 50 or higher. Moonflower faction NPCs are reported at level 45. Treat level 42 as an absolute warning line rather than a recommended target: a team around the upper 40s or 50s, with suitable passive skills and upgraded equipment, gives you room to survive mistakes.
- Combat team: Bring a balanced party with reliable damage, a way to exploit enemy weaknesses and at least one Pal that can help you reposition or escape.
- Healing: Carry more healing supplies than you would for a routine mainland trip. Death can strand you far from a convenient fast-travel point.
- Weapons and ammunition: Stock ammunition before departure. The update adds powerful options such as the Laser Rifle, Flamethrower, Gatling Gun, Grenade Launcher, Guided Missile Launcher, Multi Guided Missile Launcher and Meteor Launcher, but you still need the relevant technologies and materials to craft them.
- Armor and durability: Use your most durable armor and repair equipment before setting out. Endgame enemies can turn a long exploration run into an expensive recovery trip.
- Capture supplies: Bring enough high-tier spheres for repeated attempts; the island’s new Pals are one of the main reasons to visit.
- Base logistics: Leave storage space for Dog Coins, Crude Oil-related materials and exploration loot.
Where Sakurajima Island is and how to reach it
Map location
From the established Palworld map, travel northwest. Sakurajima is north of Icy Wind Island and Forgotten Island and southwest of the Astral Mountains. The route begins in the world you already know; there is no separate “Sakurajima” world-selection screen.

- Choose a fast-travel point on the mainland that leaves you with a clear northwest route.
- Travel toward the blacked-out northwest area using a flying or swimming mount that you can control confidently.
- As soon as the island is revealed, locate and activate a fast-travel point before exploring far inland.
- Return to your main base to refill ammunition and healing items if the first scouting run exposes a gear shortfall.
Establishing fast travel early is more valuable than immediately chasing a rare Pal. It shortens every later run to the Moonflower Tower, resource fields and deeper island zones, and it gives you a recovery route if your first expedition fails.
What to do first on Sakurajima
1. Build a foothold
After activating a fast-travel point, mark nearby terrain that can support a temporary base or staging location. Store spare ammunition, spheres and repair materials there if your world setup allows it. A foothold separates ordinary exploration from high-risk objectives and means you do not have to cross the whole map after every defeat.
2. Reveal nearby terrain and identify routes
Make one short reconnaissance loop instead of committing to a long dungeon-style run. Note cliffs, water crossings, enemy concentrations and the directions of named destinations. The secondary Palworld Database guide identifies four named island zones, a shrine and the Moonflower Tower; use those landmarks to divide exploration into manageable trips.

3. Begin the new resource loop
Look for oil fields and unlock the Crude Oil Extractor through the new technology tree. Place the extractor at an oil field, collect Crude Oil and refine it into Plasteel. Plasteel is the foundation of the update’s high-tier crafting progression, including advanced spheres, weapons and armor. Securing an oil source early gives you a reason to return to the island and steadily improves your ability to handle its hardest encounters.
4. Capture rather than only defeat new Pals
The update adds new Pal species, and the Palworld Database’s 2026 guide update counts 24 new Pals in the Sakurajima content. Bring capture spheres on every run and use the increased capture-bonus limit of 12 to improve your collection and combat options. Do not spend every sphere on the first encounter: reserve enough for rare or strategically useful species found in the deeper zones.
5. Collect Dog Coins while exploring
Dog Coins are a new currency found during the update’s activities. Save them for the Medal Merchant rather than treating them as ordinary loot. Because the currency is tied to exploration and new encounters, keeping a dedicated storage stack helps you see whether a detour is worthwhile and prevents accidental disposal.

This order is a practical progression, not an official quest sequence. You can explore first or join multiplayer activities earlier, but the resource and fast-travel steps reduce the cost of every later attempt.
Moonflowers and the new tower
The Moonflowers are a new faction, and their tower is one of Sakurajima’s central destinations. Moonflower NPCs are reported at level 45, so the tower is a meaningful endgame test rather than an introductory quest. Approach it after you have scouted the surrounding area, established a retreat route and tested your team against ordinary level-40-plus wild Pals.

- Carry a full ammunition supply rather than assuming the tower will provide a refill.
- Set your active party before entering; swapping a weak member after the fight starts can cost time and healing items.
- Keep a reserve team member available in case your preferred attacker is knocked out.
- Do not spend all your Dog Coins or rare capture supplies immediately before the attempt; a failed run should not end your exploration plan.
Once your party handles the normal tower encounter, the update also offers tower-boss hard modes. Treat those as a separate escalation: the ability to clear the standard tower does not establish that your equipment is ready for every hard-mode variation.
Crude Oil, Plasteel and the technology tree
Finding and extracting Crude Oil
Crude Oil is a new resource. The Crude Oil Extractor is the purpose-built structure for collecting it from oil fields. The practical loop is:
- Locate an oil field while scouting Sakurajima.
- Unlock the Crude Oil Extractor in the technology menu.
- Place the extractor at the oil field and protect the surrounding operation.
- Move the collected Crude Oil into your refining and storage workflow.
Turning Crude Oil into Plasteel
Crude Oil feeds Plasteel production. Plasteel then supports high-tier spheres, weapons and armor, making oil infrastructure a progression priority rather than a side activity. If you are deciding between a distant loot detour and an oil-field run, choose the oil field when your immediate goal is stronger equipment; choose exploration when you still need a particular Pal, Dog Coins or a route to a named landmark.

How lockpicking works
Locked chests on the island can be opened through a lockpicking mini-game, but only if you have a Lockpicking Tool. Treat the tool as expedition equipment: put it in your inventory before leaving a base, then use it when a locked chest appears. If the mini-game is unavailable, check that the tool is actually crafted and carried rather than stored in a chest. The system is separate from ordinary chest opening, so arriving at a locked container without the tool can turn a successful combat run into a return trip.
Oil Rig, Arena and Blazamut Ryu
Rayne Syndicate Oil Rig
The Rayne Syndicate Oil Rig is a stronghold with crude-oil rewards. Approach it after your oil-field setup and Plasteel production are functioning. The rig combines a valuable payoff with a high-risk assault, so bring replacement ammunition and avoid carrying irreplaceable loot on the first scouting attempt.

Multiplayer Arena
The Multiplayer Arena is located in the Desiccated Desert. Pocketpair’s official notes identify it as multiplayer-only, so a solo save cannot satisfy that requirement by itself. Organize your group before traveling and agree on roles, supplies and a retreat plan; the Arena is not a substitute for solo island progression.
Blazamut Ryu raid
Blazamut Ryu is a dedicated raid challenge. It belongs near the end of your Sakurajima progression because the update’s level-50-plus wild encounters, Moonflower tower and Plasteel equipment are useful readiness indicators. Build a raid roster rather than relying on one favorite Pal, and keep a separate supply stock for repeated attempts.

Meteorite events add unpredictable opportunities to the island’s routine. Investigate them when your team is healthy and you have enough inventory space; do not abandon an oil or recovery run for a meteorite if doing so would leave your base operation undefended.

The update adds the Laser Rifle, Flamethrower, Gatling Gun, Grenade Launcher, Guided Missile Launcher, Multi Guided Missile Launcher and Meteor Launcher. Unlocking every option immediately can stretch your material supply, so match the technology to your play style:
- Area damage: Grenade, missile and meteor launchers suit groups of enemies or fortified targets, but require careful ammunition planning.
- Sustained fire: The Gatling Gun favors players who can maintain distance and feed it ammunition.
- Close pressure: The Flamethrower is most useful when you can control positioning and avoid being surrounded.
- General-purpose ranged damage: The Laser Rifle offers a straightforward option when you want a dedicated high-tier firearm rather than explosive splash damage.
The exact effectiveness of each weapon depends on your current version, technology unlocks, ammunition stock and encounter. Craft one or two options that solve your immediate problem before spreading Plasteel across the entire arsenal.

Solo versus multiplayer priorities

Solo players can complete the island’s exploration, resource and tower progression. The Arena is the explicit exception in the official feature list because it requires multiplayer.

Sakurajima is not visible
- Confirm the game updated to version 0.3.1 or later.
- Load the existing world rather than looking for a separate downloadable map.
- Travel physically into the northwest fog; the island is revealed through exploration.
Enemies defeat you immediately
- Withdraw and upgrade your party instead of repeatedly sacrificing supplies.
- Use the reported level range—wild Pals from roughly 42–43 upward and level-45 Moonflower NPCs—as a minimum preparedness signal.
- Improve armor, ammunition and healing stocks, then return through your activated fast-travel point.
You cannot make Plasteel
- Check that the Crude Oil Extractor is unlocked and placed at an oil field.
- Verify that Crude Oil is entering storage and that the required technology for refining is available.
- Do not confuse ordinary mainland mining with the new oil-field production loop.
A locked chest will not open
Craft and carry the Lockpicking Tool, then start the chest’s lockpicking mini-game. Having no tool is different from failing the mini-game.
You cannot enter the Arena
The Arena is multiplayer-only. Form or join a multiplayer session rather than trying to unlock it through solo island exploration.

What to remember
Sakurajima is an endgame expansion reached by traveling northwest from the existing Palworld map. Start with a safe landing and fast-travel point, then establish Crude Oil production so Plasteel can fund stronger spheres, weapons and armor. Explore the island’s four named zones, shrine and new Pal habitats while collecting Dog Coins, and attempt the Moonflower Tower before committing to the Oil Rig or Blazamut Ryu raid. The update’s Arena requires multiplayer; the rest of the core exploration and progression can be approached from a solo world.
