To disable the Nether on a Minecraft Java server, stop the server, back up its files, move every player out of the Nether, change the setting for your server version, and restart. Vanilla Java and Paper 1.21.8 or older use allow-nether=false in server.properties. Paper 1.21.9 and newer use enable-nether: false under misc: in config/paper-global.yml.

Which setting disables the Nether?
The correct configuration depends on the server implementation and Paper version. Use the table below before editing anything.
| Server | Configuration file | Exact setting | Important note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanilla Minecraft Java | server.properties |
allow-nether=false |
The classic Java server setting; the default is normally true. |
| Paper 1.21.8 and older | server.properties |
allow-nether=false |
Use the same property as vanilla for these versions. |
| Paper 1.21.9 and newer | config/paper-global.yml |
Under misc:, set enable-nether: false |
Paper moved this control to its global YAML configuration. |
Mojang describes allow-nether as specifying whether the Nether is available on the server. Paper documents the setting as controlling whether the server allows the Nether. It is a server-level dimension control, not merely a rule for one portal.

Prepare the server safely
Do these checks before changing a configuration file. Editing while the server is running can leave a setting overwritten or interrupt world-data writes.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use your host’s Stop control, or enter
stopin the Java server console and wait until the process finishes shutting down. - Back up the world and configuration. Keep a copy of the world data,
server.properties, and, for Paper, the relevant Paper configuration. This gives you a direct rollback if a plugin or YAML error appears. - Move players out of the Nether. Ask everyone to return to the Overworld before shutdown. Paper’s current guidance warns against leaving players in a dimension that will no longer be loaded.
- Record the exact server version. Check the startup log, console, or your host’s version panel. Paper 1.21.8 and older use the properties file; Paper 1.21.9 and newer use the YAML file.
Back up existing Nether data even when the dimension is not currently loaded. Disabling the dimension changes whether it can be used; it does not make a backup unnecessary.

Disable the Nether on vanilla Java or Paper 1.21.8 and older
These servers read the allow-nether property from server.properties.
- Open the server’s main directory after the process has stopped.
- Open
server.propertieswith a plain-text editor. - Find the line beginning with
allow-nether=. - Change the value to exactly
allow-nether=false. Keep the key’s spelling and use lowercasefalse. - Save the file as plain text without changing its name or extension.
- Start the server again and wait for the normal startup completion message.
If the file does not contain an allow-nether line, add allow-nether=false on its own line, then save and restart. Do not place the property inside another file or inside a section header; server.properties uses one key-value pair per line.
Disable the Nether on Paper 1.21.9 and newer
Current Paper versions in this range use a global YAML setting instead of the old property. Editing server.properties alone will not disable the Nether on these versions.
- Stop the Paper server and make the backups described above.
- Open
config/paper-global.ymlfrom the server directory. - Locate the top-level
misc:section. - Inside that section, set the value to
enable-nether: false. - Preserve YAML indentation with spaces. Do not use tab characters, and do not place
enable-netherat the top level or under a different section. - Save the file and restart Paper.
The relevant structure should look like this:
misc:
enable-nether: false
YAML is indentation-sensitive. A misplaced key, missing spaces, or a tab can prevent Paper from loading its configuration and may stop the server from starting. If that happens, use the startup error to find the line, restore the backup, and correct the indentation before trying again.
Verify that the Nether is disabled
After restarting, test with an administrator account rather than assuming the edit was applied.
- Confirm the server completed startup without configuration errors.
- Try a normal Nether portal from the Overworld.
- Check whether an administrator can use a command or plugin teleport that previously led to the Nether.
- Review the console for errors from multi-world, warp, teleport, or portal plugins.
If a portal still works, stop the server and check the following in order:

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
- The file was saved in the actual server directory, not a local download or backup copy.
- The key is spelled exactly:
allow-nether=falsefor vanilla and older Paper, orenable-nether: falseundermisc:for Paper 1.21.9 and newer. - The server was fully restarted after the edit; reloading plugins is not equivalent to restarting the server.
- You edited the file used by the running instance. A host can expose more than one server directory or configuration profile.
- A plugin is providing its own world or teleport behavior and needs to be updated or reconfigured.
What disabling the Nether changes
With the server-level Nether setting off, the Nether is unavailable for normal survival play while the setting remains disabled. Players cannot use the dimension as part of ordinary progression, so Nether-only resources that normally come from that dimension cannot be obtained through it.
The setting affects the dimension itself, not just one portal frame. Existing Nether files should therefore remain backed up even if players can no longer travel there. Re-enabling the setting later can restore access to the existing data, subject to any changes made by world-management plugins.

Paper’s API distinguishes the server’s Nether-availability setting from portal game rules. A portal rule or plugin restriction can block a particular portal interaction while leaving the Nether enabled. Conversely, disabling the Nether at the server level removes the dimension as an available destination.
Choose the narrower control when your goal is only to stop portal travel. For example, a server that still needs Nether access for administrators or a separate world may require a portal or permission-plugin rule instead of a global dimension shutdown. Those plugin-specific controls vary by software and are not replaced by changing allow-nether or enable-nether.

Plugin and multi-world considerations
Multi-world, warp, teleport, and portal plugins may assume that the Nether exists. After the restart, inspect their logs and configuration if you see failed commands, repeated errors, missing-world messages, or portals that behave differently from expected.
- Update or reconfigure a plugin that tries to load the Nether unconditionally.
- Remove or disable portal destinations that point to the unavailable dimension.
- Check administrative warps and teleport commands for Nether coordinates.
- Test plugin-created worlds separately; a plugin may manage a world independently from the server’s normal Nether setting.
- Keep a copy of the pre-change configuration before making plugin edits so you can identify which change caused a failure.
A plugin can add its own teleport path, but that does not mean the server-level Nether setting was ignored. Treat plugin behavior as a separate configuration layer and troubleshoot it after confirming the core setting and restart.

allow-nether=false has no effect on new Paper
On Paper 1.21.9 and newer, the active control is in config/paper-global.yml. Set enable-nether: false beneath misc:, save with spaces, and restart. Leaving the old property set to false in server.properties does not substitute for the newer Paper setting.
Paper will not start after the edit
Inspect the YAML error in the console. The most common configuration faults are a tab character, incorrect indentation, a misspelled section, or placing enable-nether outside misc:. Restore the backup if necessary, then recreate the two-line structure with spaces.
Best Value
Players were online in the Nether during shutdown
Move them back to the Overworld before disabling the setting. If the change has already been made, do not repeatedly restart while players remain stranded; restore the previous configuration or use your documented administrative recovery process, then relocate players and apply the change again.

Portals still appear to work
First confirm the exact server version, active file path, saved value, and full restart. Then inspect portal, teleport, and multi-world plugins. A plugin may be handling a custom destination or reporting an error that looks like normal Nether access.
The server starts but world-related errors appear
Review the startup and plugin logs, compare the current files with your backup, and identify any component that expects the Nether to load. Reconfigure that component or restore the previous setting until you have a tested replacement.
How to re-enable the Nether
Reversal uses the same version-specific file.
- Vanilla Java or Paper 1.21.8 and older: stop the server, change
allow-nether=falsetoallow-nether=trueinserver.properties, save, and restart. - Paper 1.21.9 and newer: stop the server, change
enable-nether: falsetoenable-nether: trueundermisc:inconfig/paper-global.yml, save, and restart.
Keep the backup until players can enter and exit safely and all related plugins operate normally.
Scope and version limits
These instructions are for Minecraft Java Edition servers that you control, including vanilla and Paper. The documented procedure does not establish an equivalent setting for Bedrock servers, Realms, or console-hosted worlds. Those products use different hosting interfaces and configuration systems, so do not assume that either Java key will work there.
