For clearer live-stream audio, put the microphone close to your mouth, set levels so your loudest speech does not distort, balance your voice above other audio, and listen to a test recording before you go live. A new microphone or software filter cannot by itself fix a reverberant room or a poor signal path.
1. Improve microphone placement before changing settings
Your microphone captures the room as well as your voice. Place it close enough to favor direct speech over room reflections, point it toward your mouth, and avoid placing it near reflective surfaces where practical. Shure explains that room reverberation can degrade speech capture and that a microphone cannot improve the acoustic environment around it (Shure: Critical Distance and Microphone Placement).
- Roomy or distant sound: move the microphone closer and aim it toward you.
- Plosive pops on “p” sounds: angle the microphone slightly above or below your mouth. A pop filter can reduce plosives and help you maintain a consistent distance; it does not remove room echo or background noise. See Shure’s microphone techniques guide.
A stand or boom arm can also help keep the microphone in a repeatable position. Choose equipment for your connection, pickup pattern, room, and positioning needs; a more expensive microphone alone is not a remedy for a noisy or reverberant space.
2. Set levels across the entire audio chain
Check the signal from its source through your operating system and applications to OBS. OBS recommends starting at the source device, then checking system and application levels, and using OBS controls as needed. The exact menu labels can vary by OBS release and platform, so verify the settings on your own device. Its Audio Mixer Guide explains the meter and signal path.

- Select the intended microphone. In OBS, open Settings → Audio and select the microphone you actually use. Speak and confirm that its mixer meter moves.
- Check the upstream input. If the OBS meter does not respond, confirm the microphone is connected and selected as the operating-system input device. Check its device-level input setting before raising OBS controls.
- Check application audio separately. Confirm that the intended game, call, music, or other source is reaching OBS, and that the operating-system or application mixer has not muted or turned it down.
- Speak at your loudest expected level. Watch the OBS meter while testing. Red indicates a signal close to clipping; clipping is distortion caused by a level too high for accurate reproduction. If speech distorts, lower the gain at the earliest point in the chain that is too high, then check the meter again.
- Balance voice against other sound. Make speech clearly intelligible over gameplay, music, and effects. Meter readings alone do not guarantee that sources sound equally loud to viewers, so judge the balance by listening to a recording.
OBS documents -20 dBFS as its Alignment Level and -9 dBFS as its Permitted Maximum Level in its meter discussion. These are technical references for interpreting OBS meters, not universal loudness targets for every voice, device, or streaming platform (OBS Project, Audio Mixer Guide, dated 2026-04-03).
3. Record and listen before the broadcast
A meter can show that a signal is present without revealing how it sounds to a viewer. Make a short recording or test stream with a representative mix of your normal speech, gameplay, calls, music, and alerts. Listen back before the real broadcast and adjust any source that is missing, distorted, muffled, echoey, too quiet, or overpowering the others. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers its setup and test workflow.

4. Troubleshoot the sound viewers hear
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No voice in OBS | Wrong input selected, disconnected device, or muted/low system input. | Check Settings → Audio, speak and watch the mixer meter, then confirm the microphone and operating-system input selection. |
| Voice sounds roomy or far away | Microphone is too distant, pointed away, or picking up reflections. | Move it closer, point it toward your mouth, and reduce nearby reflections where practical. |
| Voice distorts | Gain is too high somewhere in the signal path. | Lower the level at the earliest source that is too high and test again at your loudest expected speech level. |
| Voice is buried by gameplay or other audio | Other sources are too prominent, or the balance only looked right on meters. | Adjust source volumes, then judge intelligibility from a recording rather than meter readings alone. |
| “P” sounds pop | Air from speech is hitting the microphone directly. | Angle the microphone slightly above or below your mouth; try a pop filter if needed. |
| A source is missing or unexpectedly quiet | It may be muted, assigned to another device, or turned down in the system or application mixer. | Check the source device and its system and application levels, then confirm it appears in the OBS mix. |
5. Keep a pre-live sound check short and repeatable
- Confirm the intended microphone and output devices are selected.
- Check that the OBS meter responds when you speak and does not reach clipping during loud speech.
- Listen to the mix with all normal audio sources active.
- Record a fresh test after moving the microphone or changing a level.
