To get a more checkable AI answer, ask it to separate claims from evidence, state assumptions and uncertainty, identify missing information, and flag what needs human verification. That can make an answer easier to inspect; it does not prove the answer is true or shift responsibility for a decision to the AI.
Why “be helpful” is not enough
A general instruction to be helpful describes a desired manner of response, not a standard for proving its claims. An answer can sound fluent and useful while leaving unclear what supports it, what it assumes, or where it may be wrong.

A 2024 study published in Findings of EMNLP tested 162 system-prompt roles across four model families on 2,410 factual questions. Across that evaluated set, adding personas did not improve performance compared with a no-persona control. The result is limited to those tested prompts, models, and questions; it does not show that every instruction is ineffective, and the study did not test the accountability-oriented request below. Association for Computational Linguistics: Zheng et al., 2024.
For readers, the practical distinction is between asking for a style and asking for information that can be checked. “Be helpful” may encourage a polished answer. Asking for evidence, assumptions, and uncertainty makes it easier to assess how the answer was reached, without guaranteeing correctness.

A practical prompt for a checkable answer
You can adapt this request to a question that needs careful evaluation:
Answer the question, but make the answer checkable. Separate factual claims from the evidence supporting each one. Link to sources for claims that depend on external facts, and distinguish direct evidence from your interpretation. State your assumptions and any important information you lack. Explain what you are uncertain about and what you cannot establish. Flag claims or decisions that I should verify independently. If the available information is insufficient, say so rather than filling gaps with a guess.
This is a practical way to request transparency, not a validated formula or an accuracy guarantee. The reviewed sources do not establish a general success rate for “accountability prompts,” and no study among them directly tests whether this exact format improves the correctness of ordinary consumer answers.
How to inspect the answer
Claims and evidence
Look for a clear distinction between what the assistant asserts and what its cited material actually supports. Open the source and check whether it addresses the same claim, applies to the relevant date and context, and is a primary or otherwise credible source. A citation that exists is not, by itself, proof that the cited source supports the sentence.
Assumptions and missing information
Check whether the answer relies on details you have not supplied, such as a country, software version, date, or intended use. If an omitted detail could change the answer, provide it and ask the assistant to reassess. An explicit assumption is useful because you can correct it; an unstated one can quietly steer the conclusion.
Uncertainty and verification
Ask what the assistant cannot establish from the available information and which parts need independent checking. Treat uncertainty as a guide to where review matters, not as a calibrated probability unless the system explains a sound basis for that number.
What accountability means beyond a prompt
Accountability is an organizational practice, not a wording trick. The U.S. Government Accountability Office organizes its AI accountability framework around governance, data, performance, and monitoring, with the aim of helping organizations make, implement, and oversee AI-use decisions. GAO, Artificial Intelligence: An Accountability Framework for Federal Agencies and Other Entities (2021).
- Governance: establish who owns the AI use and who can approve or stop it.
- Data: understand the information used and relevant limitations in it.
- Performance: evaluate whether the system works for the intended task and users.
- Monitoring: keep watching for problems as the system and its use change.
Policy guidance points in the same direction. The U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration recommends better information about AI systems and independent evaluation of their performance, limitations, and governance, especially for high-risk systems. Its 2024 fact sheet describes recommendations; they should not be mistaken for a universal legal requirement. NTIA, AI Accountability Policy Report fact sheet.

The UK Government’s Magenta Book says evaluators must retain responsibility for AI-assisted processes and outputs rather than delegate it to a model. It also notes that probabilistic systems can vary between runs, complicating reproducibility. That matters when a result needs to be repeated or audited: preserve enough context about the system, inputs, and process to understand what was done. The U.S. Intelligence Community’s AI Ethics Framework also emphasizes accountability across the lifecycle, human judgment, proportionate testing, documentation, and clear ownership. U.S. Intelligence Community AI Ethics Framework.

For decisions affecting safety, health, finances, rights, or public services, do not treat a well-structured answer as approval to act. A person or organization using the system must decide whether its use is appropriate, review the evidence, and take responsibility for the outcome. A prompt cannot perform independent evaluation or transfer that responsibility.

When comparing answers or prompting approaches, inspect factual accuracy, traceability to evidence, disclosure of uncertainty and assumptions, reproducibility, and the amount of human review needed. These are useful dimensions to consider, not a single validated universal score.
