Check for the card in My Files

  1. Insert the microSD card, if your Galaxy model has a card slot.

  2. Open My Files. Samsung describes this app as a way to browse files by category and storage location.

  3. Under storage locations, tap SD card if it appears. The location is shown only when a card is inserted. To check used or available space, use the storage details displayed on your device; Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by software version and provider, so there is no single Settings path that applies to every Galaxy.

What to do if the SD card is missing

Confirm the Galaxy model supports microSD

Not all Samsung phones and tablets have a microSD slot. Check the specifications or manual for your exact model before troubleshooting or buying a card. For example, Samsung Singapore’s guide, last updated July 28, 2022, says Galaxy S21 models do not include a slot; that model-specific note should not be applied to every Galaxy.

Reseat and test the card

  1. Turn off the device if required by its instructions, then remove and reinsert the card, checking that it is seated correctly.

  3. Back up important files before formatting. Formatting erases the card’s contents. If the card remains unrecognized after these checks, it may be damaged.

Use the card for files—and understand its limits

Move or copy files with My Files

To transfer files, select them in My Files, choose Move or Copy, return to My Files Home, select SD card, choose a destination folder, and confirm. Samsung’s documented workflow uses My Files rather than Gallery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check app storage options individually

Some apps may offer a move option at Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage > Change. The path and availability can vary, and many apps cannot be moved. If Change is absent, Samsung says that app’s storage location cannot be changed.

Do not assume the card becomes internal storage

A microSD card provides removable storage for files on compatible devices; it does not universally merge with or expand internal storage. Samsung states that its Android devices do not support adoptable storage. See Samsung’s microSD card guidance.

Choose a card only after checking compatibility

If you are buying a card, first confirm that your exact Galaxy model supports one and check its manual for capacity and speed limits. Samsung’s current US support page lists these capacity classes:

Card type Capacity listed by Samsung Samsung guidance on use
microSD Up to 2 GB Less demanding still photography
microSDHC Over 2 GB up to 32 GB Less demanding still photography
microSDXC Over 32 GB up to 2 TB Recommended by Samsung for high-resolution video

These are card-format capacity bands, not a guarantee that every Galaxy supports every capacity. Samsung’s general guidance also does not establish one universally suitable card or speed rating. Verify compatibility with the exact device before purchasing.

For more ways to manage space on the phone itself, Samsung also explains how to free up storage on a Galaxy phone or tablet.
