Apple Wallet can do more than hold a payment card, but its features depend on your iPhone, issuer, pass, transit operator, merchant, and region. These ten tips show how to make common Wallet tasks quicker—and where to check compatibility before relying on them.
1. Make your preferred payment card the default
Move the card you use most to the front of the Wallet stack. Open Wallet, touch and hold the credit or debit card, then drag it in front of the other cards. You can still choose a different card when paying. See Apple’s Wallet setup guide and Apple Pay purchase guide.

2. Turn on Express Mode for eligible items
Express Mode lets a supported transit card, pass, or key work at a compatible reader without waking or unlocking your iPhone or authenticating first. In Wallet, open the item and look for its Express Mode setting; the available controls depend on the item. Use it for credentials where the speed is worth skipping the unlock step, and leave other items in the standard authentication flow. Apple says some eligible Express Mode items may remain usable for up to five hours after the iPhone needs charging. This is not a guarantee for every item: it does not apply when the phone is turned off, and repeated checks can reduce the reserve. Apple’s Express Mode instructions describe the feature and eligibility.

Where supported, you can select a transit card to use with Express Mode on its network, so you can tap at a compatible reader without first unlocking the iPhone. Apple says you can set one transit card per transit network and choose a payment card for places where that transit card is not accepted. Check the transit operator’s local instructions before transferring a card: some physical transit cards become inactive after transfer to Wallet. Support and transfer steps vary by market and operator. Apple’s transit card availability and setup information can help you check the relevant system.

4. Let a pass appear when you need it
Some Wallet passes can be set to suggest on the Lock Screen at a relevant time or place—for example, a boarding pass near departure. Open the pass and check whether it offers a Lock Screen suggestion or notification setting; not every issuer provides one. If it does not appear automatically, open Wallet and present the barcode, QR code, or contactless credential the venue requires. Apple explains pass notifications in its guide to using passes.
5. Verify transit and pass acceptance before you travel
A pass appearing in Wallet does not guarantee that a particular gate, reader, or operator accepts it. Transit and eMoney card support is limited to supported devices and markets, and transfer procedures vary. Before setting out, check the local operator’s requirements and how it accepts payment; for a ticket or venue pass, confirm which credential or code the reader needs. Apple’s transit card guidance describes the need to check supported systems.

6. Search Wallet activity and card details
For supported cards, Wallet may show recent activity and available card details. Use Wallet’s search to look for a transaction by merchant, date, amount, or location. The records and details you can see depend on the card issuer and item, so Wallet may not show the same information for every card. Apple outlines these options in its Wallet card details and activity guide.

7. Hide expired passes you might need again
To keep old tickets or passes out of the main Wallet view without losing the option to restore them, turn on Hide Expired Passes in Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay. Find hidden items in Wallet’s Expired section, where you can restore a pass or delete it permanently. Hiding and deleting are different: deleting a pass removes it from your other Apple Wallet devices too. Apple’s instructions for managing expired passes explain the distinction.

8. Check Wallet for participating-merchant order tracking
Some purchases made through participating apps or websites can appear in Wallet with order details and shipping progress. It is not universal package tracking: the merchant must participate. You can manage the feature under Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay. Apple describes the feature in its order tracking support article.
9. Understand Apple’s explanation of Apple Pay card numbers
Apple says, “Apple doesn’t store the original card numbers of credit, debit or prepaid cards that you add to Apple Pay.” Apple describes a device-specific Device Account Number stored in the Secure Element and a dynamic security code used for transactions. That is Apple’s explanation of its payment design, not a promise that using Apple Pay eliminates every privacy concern or financial risk. Read Apple’s Apple Pay security and privacy explanation for its account of the system.

10. Use Wallet keys and IDs only where they are supported
Depending on the issuer, partner, jurisdiction, and reader, Wallet may support credentials such as home, car, or hotel keys and certain identity documents. Express Mode and sharing are available only for some credential types and partners. Apple says ID data is encrypted on-device and can be presented selectively, but acceptance is determined by the issuer and the location or reader. Keep a physical credential when local rules or a fallback option make it necessary. Apple describes Wallet keys and supported identity credentials separately.
If your iPhone is lost, remove its payment cards
Use your Apple Account device page or another Apple device to remove payment cards from the missing iPhone; contacting the card issuer is another option. Removing a card from that iPhone does not necessarily remove it from Wallet on your other devices. Follow Apple’s card and pass removal instructions.
