How to Move a WordPress Site With Claude’s Help: What Transfers and What Doesn’t

Claude can help plan and review a WordPress migration, but it does not transfer a live site. Learn what WXR includes, what needs separate handling, and how to choose a migration path.

Claude can help you plan and review a WordPress migration, but it is not a turnkey service that moves a live site. The right process depends on your destination: WordPress’s WXR export moves selected content, while a full server move or a rebuild for another platform requires separate handling of files, design, settings, media, and site features.

Can Claude migrate a WordPress site?

Not by itself, based on the capabilities described in the reviewed Anthropic prompting documentation and Claude Code documentation. Claude can assist with planning, mapping content fields or URLs when the destination is known, reviewing supplied code or export excerpts, and drafting replacement copy or code. You still need to export or transfer the site, configure the destination, and verify the result.

Do not treat Claude-generated mappings or code as proven conversions. Check them against the original site and how the destination behaves. The cited Anthropic materials do not establish that Claude exports a WordPress database, transfers media, configures DNS, verifies redirects, or completes a production migration.

Choose the migration path before exporting

“Moving away from WordPress” can mean moving content to another publishing platform, moving a WordPress site to a new server, or rebuilding the site elsewhere. These are different jobs. The destination, hosting arrangement, site size, multisite status, custom post types, plugins, forms, commerce features, and URL structure determine what work is required.

Path What it is for What to plan for
WordPress content export and import Moving supported content through a WXR file, usually between WordPress sites or through a destination importer that accepts a compatible format. It does not carry the full site configuration, design, themes, plugins, or attachment files. Confirm what the destination importer supports.
WordPress-to-WordPress server move Moving a WordPress installation to a different server while retaining WordPress. Back up and move the WordPress files and database; update configuration if database credentials change, and handle URL changes separately.
Rebuild or destination-specific migration Moving to a non-WordPress platform or recreating features that do not transfer directly. Map content and URLs, recreate design and functionality, and follow the destination platform’s own import and validation process.

WordPress’s importer lists selected sources, including Blogger, LiveJournal, Movable Type/TypePad, RSS, and Tumblr. An importer’s presence does not mean every layout or feature will convert; check the destination’s supported formats and limits before choosing this route (WordPress import screen documentation).

What a WordPress WXR export includes—and omits

In the WordPress dashboard, go to Tools > Export and create a WordPress eXtended RSS (WXR) file. Depending on the selected export filters, it can include posts, pages, custom post types, comments, custom fields, categories, tags, custom taxonomies, and users (WordPress export documentation).

WXR is a content export, not a full-site backup. WordPress’s WP-CLI documentation states: “WXR files do not include site configuration (options) or the attachment files themselves” (WP-CLI export documentation). The export can refer to attachments without containing the underlying media files. WordPress Learn also notes that unattached Media Library items not embedded in a post or page are not included in the XML export (WordPress Learn import tutorial).

Content transfer does not automatically bring over the source site’s design, themes, or plugins. If you import into another WordPress site and need the original presentation, the WordPress Learn tutorial advises installing and activating the original theme. A different platform may not support that theme at all; its appearance and features may need to be rebuilt.

Back up before making changes

For a move to a new server, the WordPress Advanced Administration Handbook recommends backing up the WordPress directory, images, plugins, other site files, and database. Keep a separate copy of the backup rather than relying only on the working migration copy (WordPress migration handbook).

When moving WordPress and keeping the database and URLs the same, copying the files and database can in many cases be sufficient. If database credentials change, update wp-config.php. A domain or URL change requires the handbook’s URL-change guidance and a check of resulting media URLs. These are WordPress server-move instructions, not a universal conversion recipe for another platform.

Keep design transfer separate from content transfer

If the site uses WordPress’s Site Editor theme customizations, its separate export action downloads a theme ZIP containing templates, template parts, and style settings (WordPress Site Editor export documentation). This is distinct from the WXR content export. It does not make the WXR a full-site export or guarantee that another platform can use the theme files.

A practical migration sequence

  1. Define the destination and scope. Record the target platform and hosting arrangement, site size, multisite status, custom post types, plugins, forms, commerce functions, and current URL structure. Decide which features must survive and whether content import alone can meet that need.
  2. Make and verify a full backup. For a WordPress server move, include the site files and database. Keep the backup apart from the copy you will use for migration.
  3. Inventory what the site contains. List posts, pages, media, taxonomies, menus, custom fields, templates, plugins, integrations, and URL patterns. Do not assume a WXR file contains settings or all media.
  4. Select the appropriate transfer method. Use a content export/import for supported content, a files-and-database move for a WordPress server transfer, or the destination’s migration process for a rebuild or platform conversion.
  5. Use Claude for bounded tasks. Ask it to draft a checklist, map supplied fields or URLs to a known destination format, review supplied code or export excerpts, or help write replacement copy. Review generated work rather than treating it as a completed migration.
  6. Validate before switching traffic. Check representative pages, images, forms, navigation, metadata, and destination URLs. Plan redirects for URLs that change; the required rules depend on the source and destination.

Import into another WordPress site

For a WordPress-to-WordPress content import, the WordPress Learn tutorial uses Tools > Import > WordPress. After uploading the WXR file, select Download and Import File Attachments if you want the importer to attempt to bring in referenced attachments. This does not include unattached Media Library items omitted from the XML. Review the imported media and content rather than assuming the import is complete.

If the destination uses a different theme, install and activate the original theme only if it is compatible and you want its presentation. Otherwise, plan to recreate the design. For a whole-site transfer, WordPress Learn notes that a migration plugin may be needed; the right option depends on the site and destination.

What to ask Claude to do

Give Claude a specific task and the relevant material, while withholding credentials and sensitive data. Useful requests include:

  • Turn your inventory into a migration checklist organized by content, media, design, functionality, and URLs.
  • Compare a supplied list of WordPress fields with a destination platform’s documented import schema.
  • Review a small, sanitized export excerpt and identify fields that appear unmapped or ambiguous.
  • Draft replacement copy or code for a feature you have already decided to rebuild.

For code or data transformations, ask for the assumptions and mapping to be made explicit, then check the output against representative source records and the destination’s actual behavior. Claude’s suggestions can help organize the work; they do not replace access to the site, the destination’s requirements, or hands-on verification.
