For better low-light iPhone photos, use Night mode when it appears, tap the subject to set focus and exposure, and keep the phone still until the capture finishes. For a static scene, bracing the iPhone or using a compatible tripod can reduce camera shake; for moving subjects, a longer exposure may not help because the subject can still blur.
Use Night mode and hold steady
On supported iPhones, Night mode turns on automatically in low light. Apple’s general guidance says it is available on iPhone 11 and later, though options vary by model. Look for the Night mode icon in Camera to confirm it is active. Depending on the darkness, capture may take several seconds; keep the phone still until the timer or capture indicator ends. If Camera offers a longer exposure option, use it for a stationary scene only when you can hold the phone steady for the full capture. A secure surface or phone-compatible tripod can help. Apple’s iPhone User Guide recommends: “Use a tripod for even more detailed Night mode photos.” Apple’s Night mode user guide includes the tip. A tripod steadies the camera, not a person, pet, or vehicle moving through the frame.
Set focus and exposure on the subject
Frame the scene, then tap the subject or the point where you want focus to fall. The iPhone sets focus and exposure automatically, but you can adjust the result: drag the exposure control beside the focus area up to brighten or down to darken. If you want the focus and exposure to stay fixed while you reframe, touch and hold the focus area for AE/AF Lock. Apple documents these controls in its iPhone camera settings guide.

Choose between Night mode, flash, and Live Photos
Night mode, flash, and Live Photos are not all active together. Apple says turning on flash while Night mode is active deactivates Night mode; turning on Live Photos does the same. Flash can be controlled manually, so choose it when you want to try a flash-lit shot, knowing Night mode will switch off. Results depend on the subject’s distance and movement and on the available ambient light; there is no universal choice that works best in every scene. Apple’s support page describes this behavior.

Why iPhone night photos look blurry
Two kinds of movement can soften a low-light image: the camera moving during its multi-second capture, or the subject moving while the photo is taken. Hold the phone securely, or brace it on a stable surface for a stationary scene. A tripod can steady the camera, but it cannot freeze a moving subject; a longer exposure is therefore not a general fix for people, pets, or vehicles in motion.

If the photo is too bright or too dark, tap the subject and adjust exposure before taking another shot. If the subject is out of focus, tap the intended focus point. Review the new capture and change the framing or setting as needed; editing cannot restore detail that was not recorded.

Apple’s general Night mode availability is broader than its specific Night mode selfie and Portrait features, which are supported on a subset of models. Controls also differ: Apple’s support guidance describes a Night mode slider, while the user guide covers controls through Camera Controls. Use the Night mode control visible on your device rather than assuming every iPhone has the same options or screen.
